Jamus prepares for Christmas celebrations.

Although we’re just a week into December, the feeling of the holidays is already palpable, with the usual Orchard Road light up, Christmas music on the airwaves and piped into malls, and decorations in public spaces and homes alike. We’ve even had our year-end rainy reason-for-the-season for many weeks now (ok, that’s not really the reason for the season, but then again many religions and cultures do celebrate a form of winter solstice, not just Christians).
In #SengkangGRC, we will have our Christmas celebrations at the divisional level. I’ll be involved with events at both #Anchorvale and #Compassvale (note the distinct locations and dates in the two posters), and we hope that as many residents will join us as possible! There’ll be games and arts n’ craft, but we’ll also have a visit from a local Santa, and Christmas caroling (I’ll be doing a small set in collaboration with a very talented resident).

Jamus continues house visits.

Our #TeamSengkang house visits this week allowed us to wrap up 304A #Anchorvale, and our estate walk covered the Grove (323-5) cluster.
We stumbled on a number of our specialized recycling bins, which are designated for the collection of textiles and other personal use items, such as bags and shoes. The brightly colored yellow bins can be found in clusters around #Anchorvale, and in time, these will also be rolled out to the other divisions of #SengkangGRC. We encourage residents to consider dropping off their preloved items—assuming they are in reasonable condition—in these bins, instead of disposing them. Depending on their state, the items are either resold in second-hand markets in Malaysia, sold for upcycling into other products, or (in the worst-case scenario) used as fuel along with coal to produce energy.
Thanks to our partners, Life Line Clothing, for their commitment to this work of reducing our impact on the planet. Their approach goes beyond the usual 3Rs of reuse, reduce, and recycle, to add another “R”: of renewing the lifespan of some of these donated items. The project is part of the ongoing effort by the town council to implement green initiatives across the estate.

Jamus gave out school related items.

Over the weekend, #TeamSengkang gave out school-related items for our annual back-to-school event. The gifts are for low-income students at the primary and secondary school age, who are residents of #Anchorvale.
We try to vary the items we give out each year, so this round, we delivered backpacks (in several colors), in addition to our usual book vouchers. It was fun to see the kids exercise expressive choice, and pick out their preferred colors.
Thanks as always to the generous donors, who make such an annual gifting activity possible. We are always looking to expand our network of partners, so if you or your organization would like to help kids of welfare families with a meaningful endeavor—education—please do reach out! #SengkangGRC

Jamus enjoys running around with his daughter.

One of the small perks from this time of the year is the relatively cooler mornings. This means—for those of us who start our day with a workout—that going that jog outside or doing exercises in the park become just a little bit more pleasant. So if you’re contemplating starting a new #HealthySG routine as a New Year’s resolution, why not be a rebel and start now? One of my major motivations for keeping fit is so that I can enjoy running around with my daughter (and the hope that, when she gets older, I’ll be able to join her in climbing a mountain—should she wish, especially given her outdoorsy personality). Hopefully, you’ll be able to find an enduring motivation of your own, whatever it may be, that’ll keep you going throughout the year to come.
