We rounded up our house visits for the year by wrapping up 294A #Compassvale, getting a solid start on the adjacent 293A, as well as hitting most of 319A #Anchorvale. A quick stocktake reveals that we have, till date, covered a little less than half of all the blocks I represent. At around two-and-a-half years since we were voted in to #SengkangGRC, this means we are on track to visit each block at least once, if we assume the usual five-year electoral cycle (of course, we’re price takers on this front, so we’ll need to adjust our schedule accordingly, if there’s any sense that an earlier election may be called).
Along the way, residents have shared with us their thoughts and feedback on a wide range of issues, from those of national consequence—such as the high cost-of-living due to inflation, the burden of GST increases, the affordability and accessibility of HDB, and concerns about our nation’s educational policy—to those of a more local flavor, including requests for gardens or walkways, cleanliness and maintenance, repainting and repair, and (yes) coffeeshops. They’ve also let us into their lives, sharing stories about family members, holidays, personal challenges, and the occasional food and drink.
House visits are an essential way that the #workersparty gains insight into the issues that matter for our residents. We want such sharing opportunities to be as candid and spontaneous as possible, which is one reason why we don’t announce such schedules in advance. Nor do we alert the estate team about which cluster we plan to visit, so that we are able to have a genuine spot check on ground conditions.
Our journey continues. If #TeamSengkang haven’t quite gotten to your block yet: akan datang! We randomize our coverage across blocks and clusters, so we will eventually get there. Here’s wishing all a fruitful and meaningful year to come.

The Workers’ Party Secretary-General’s New Year Message 2023
WP’s Pritam Singh reviews key debates in 2022, sends New Year’s wishes to Singaporeans
2022 in review
____________________________________________
The year 2022 was the year that much of the world, including Singapore, started living with Covid-19. It was to be the return to the days before the pandemic, yet it was not meant to be. Supply chain disruptions that exacerbated when countries opened up were further stressed by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, and the energy and food supply crises that ensued. The world was left with inflation not seen since the 1970s and the cost of living became severely impacted across the globe.
The Workers’ Party believes that the struggle for dignity is common to our humanity and thus the voices of the people must be heard. In 2022, we have strived to improve the lives of communities that we serve and of all Singaporeans by speaking up in Parliament on key issues of concern to them.
Policy debates
In Parliament, the WP MPs brought up the related issues of inflation, higher interest rates and rising cost of living arising from dearer public services such as utilities and public transport, and what may be done to mitigate its impact or stay ahead of the situation. We objected to the GST rate hike as being ill-timed against this inflationary backdrop and proposed other ways to generate government revenue such as a wealth tax and making corporate tax more progressive.
Our counter-inflationary proposals included strengthening the Singapore dollar in real terms to make our imports cheaper, selling long bonds to dampen speculative investment and keeping a lid on asset prices, spending to support — for a temporary period — those among us that are hurting the most and financing this by rebating any windfall tax gains, as well as a moratorium on further increases in fees and fares that the public has to pay to government and its agencies.
Another area we have voiced concern about is housing, where a crisis of sorts has emerged. We argued for more housing options, such as an expanded public and subsidised rental scheme for the wider population to support the diverse needs of Singaporeans and to lower the age singles may buy BTO flats to 28 from 35.
As HDB resale and BTO prices headed upwards well into the second half of 2022, WP MPs probed the reasons for the sky high resale flat prices and asked HDB to reveal the costs of developing new flats. Even when told that some of the data we asked for would not be “meaningful”, we pressed on. We did so because Singaporeans have a right to know more details behind one of the biggest financial outlays in their lifetime.
Jobs, retrenchment, re-employment and livelihood issues were also addressed by the WP in Parliament this year. We scrutinised the Minister for Manpower on the new schemes that were introduced to regulate and encourage the hiring of foreigners, including what benefits these schemes will bring for Singaporean employees. We proposed enhancements to the Employment Pass (EP) framework as well as issuing fixed-term EPs that cannot be renewed once they expire. This way employers will be better incentivised to hire and train Singaporeans to fill those positions before the EPs expire and there will be more knowledge and skills transferred to Singaporeans.
Initiatives for our community
While giving voice to Singaporeans’ concerns and aspirations in Parliament, we also sought to galvanise our community of residents and volunteers through various grassroots initiatives.
Our National Day Dinner 2022 held on 13 August 2022 was memorable as our first big dinner event since the General Election in 2020, organised for the residents of all the WP-held wards. We hosted nearly 1,400 people at the dinner, including representatives from churches, temples, mosques, family service centres and community organisations based in Aljunied, Hougang and Sengkang. On that night, all of us were bonded together by our love for our country and comradeship with one another.
In September, the Party’s Youth Wing and Policy Research Team jointly held the WP Youth Wing Policy Challenge 2022 for Singaporeans aged 40 and below to submit a one-page outline of their proposed speech in Parliament, consult MPs to fine-tune their proposals and then defend and debate them in a public session. Nicole Seah, President of the WP Youth Wing, said that this initiative was launched to provide our youths with a platform and to try their hand at parliamentary work. We were heartened by the response from many young Singaporeans, which augurs well for the future of our nation.
Another initiative that we supported to benefit our residents was the Handyman Subsidy Scheme which provides a modest subsidy for household repairs to help residents who live alone in WP wards. The scheme covers general handyman work in homes, beyond just electrical and plumbing repairs.
New Year wishes
___________________________________________
As we welcome a new year, I wish to extend my gratitude to all our residents, volunteers, supporters, donors and Party members who have kept faith with us in 2022. Thank you for your belief, energy, time and ideas.
I hope you look forward to your journey with us in 2023. Wishing all good health, be safe and well. Happy New Year!

Jamus' better half prepared empanadas for a New Year’s potluck.

My better half decided to prepare empanadas for a New Year’s potluck we were invited to. Empanadas—a savory, stuffed turnover pastry—the Latin world’s variant of the curry puff, and much like curry puffs, are street food that is near and dear to many who grew up eating them.
Chilean-style empanadas tend to be baked, rather than fried, and incorporate more fruits of the sea—a reflection of the nation’s very long coastline. My wife made hers with Impossible mince, along with onion, raisins, black olives, a slice of hard-boiled egg, and (of course) spices. When we lived in DC, there was a larger Latin community, and so we were able to buy these and freeze them, before bunging them into the oven for brekkie. These days, my breakfast is more typically reheated curry puffs, but it was nice to have a throwback to something old and familiar.
Empanadas are a reminder that folks are often much more similar than we often care to admit. We arrive at similar ideas and solutions, and frequently make the same mistakes, over time and place. People have a tendency to become tribal, rather than see how we are all working toward a common goal: human prosperity, and a better tomorrow. One of my wishes for the new year is that we, as a nation, come to recognize the commonalities that we share, rather than emphasize the distinctions that threaten to tear us apart.

For our first house visits of the new year, #TeamSengkang wrapped up 319A #Anchorvale, before proceeding on to 331C. Folks were back from their holidays, and so we were able to touch base with more households, compared to our year-end visits. Indeed, judging by the decorations, it seems like many families were gearing up for the Lunar New Year!
We bumped into a young gentleman on our way up, who shared that he had just competed his “A” levels, and was awaiting his results. I asked him what he wished to study, and he said medicine. We then met him, with his family, again when we were roving door-to-door. His family turned out to be a single-income household, with the father—the sole breadwinner—having to support two kids. The past year has been difficult for them, especially with rising prices and the overall cost of living. He added that government support—pegged to the annual value of their home—did not fully capture the challenges their household faced.
Singapore has many families with such contrasting stories. One of hope and opportunity, for a brighter future and the possibility of a promising career. Another of struggle and compromise, trying to make ends meet, to help fulfill the dreams of the other. My hope is that, as a society, we’ll continue to find it within ourselves to lend a helping hand to those with potential, so that they may uplift themselves and their families, and in doing so, make the Singapore we live in a better place. #SengkangGRC

In his speech on two SkillsFuture-related bills, MP Jamus Lim asked if designating SkillsFuture as wages may have an unintended consequence of discouraging its use, and asked if there were ways to encourage greater provider participation in SkillsFuture.

What you need to know about JC Economics after O-level results are out.
For those who are advancing into a Junior College, many parents of these students often ask me - What is Economics like? What are the pre-requisites for Economics? What are the career prospects of studying Economics?
I'm privileged to have interviewed Jamus Lim a few years ago to obtain his insights on the above few questions: I will also be hosting a JC subject combination talk with a few JC subject experts: Clement Ho, Eric Kua, Tuck Meng Tham on the 29th of Jan (Sunday) at 8pm via Zoom. I will share more details closer to the date. If you know of fellow parents who needs advice on JC subject combination, feel free to share this post with them.
P.S: The cockles in my heart had been warmed after the interview:

This week, #TeamSengkang completed our rounds for 331C #Anchorvale (Harvest) and got started on a handful of floors at 336A (Cove).
One of our house visits brought us to the Japanese-inspired home of Amal. Beautiful Arabic-Chinese calligraphy and Gansai watercolors adorned the walls, rooms were divided by Japanese-style paper screens, and the hall had even been converted into a traditional tea room, fully decked out with tatami mats and a ceremonial table. What was most amazing is that he shared that he did this all by himself, procuring items online. His can-do spirit reminded me of what I often witnessed in California, where regular folks would happily take on projects like car maintenance, home remodeling, and and landscaping.
Amal was clearly proud of his living environment. And part of that environment is, of course, the common areas maintained by the town council. A number of residents asked about the status of the repair and redecoration (R&R) works, which is due for both the Harvest and Cove clusters, among others.
As I shared with them, the R&R process for these clusters has already commenced, although it may not be immediately evident, because much of this goes on at the back end. The specifications were completed last year, and public tender closed in December. The next step that will occur in the months ahead are tender evaluation, interview, and contract award, before actual works begin on the ground. Hence, while it may seem outwardly like nothing is moving, things actually are, and such measured steps are required so that the town council is responsible with public monies.
The town council plays a crucial part in improving the living environment of our residents. We therefore take our oversight of SKTC very seriously, and do our level best to ensure that feedback is attended to promptly, suggestions are considered carefully, and that #SengkangGRC is constantly being improved, bit by bit.
Postscript: Amal’s amazing place has been featured in various writeups; you can take a gander here: https://www.homeanddecor.com.sg/.../house-tour-japanese.../
