The logo Sengkang Town Council (SKTC) picked out of the 419 submissions it received in a recently-held logo design contest has won praise online for being visually appealing while still reflecting iconic features of the new town.

The town council, which was formed by the Workers’ Party (WP) after it won the GRC in the July elections, organised a logo design competition a number of weeks ago and sought logo designs that “reflect the character of Sengkang town and the values of the Workers’ Party”.

SKTC said that the winning designer would win a S$500 cash prize and an optional mentorship with BLACK creative designer Jackson Tan, and kept the contest open only to Singaporean students aged 13 and above.

The contest received a good response and 419 entries were sent to SKTC for deliberation. After over a month, SKTC has chosen to base its town council logo on an entry submitted by Kelly Hah.

Revealing that Kelly’s logo was tweaked with the input of Jackson Tan and his team of designers at creative agency BLACK, SKTC said on Facebook on Friday (23 Oct): “We sincerely thank every participant for sharing with us your wonderful ideas and we congratulate Kelly for winning the competition! Our team chose this logo as we felt it best reflected the character of Sengkang Town and the values of the WP.”

The winning entry features three blocks of flats against an orange sun. A green leaf is prominently placed in the foreground to represent the greenery in the town, alongside light blue waves which seem to depict the body of water that runs along Sengkang Riverside Park.

The final logo design also features another design element that was not present in Kelly’s original design – a light blue heart-shaped element that makes the waves look like the iconic whale at the Sengkang Sculpture Park.

SKTC said that Kelly “drew inspiration from Sengkang’s natural and built environments” and that the elements in her logo were bonded together within a circle “to reflect the spirit of an inclusive and liveable community in Sengkang.”

The town council added:“We hope that the logo represents, as Kelly aptly put it, “Sengkang Town – an inspiring and caring home for all generations, and where our dreams can be fulfilled.””

SKTC’s post drew close to 3,000 likes while the WP’s official Facebook page garnered another 3,200 reactions when it re-posted the logo on its page.

Full of shit lah you. No get one third no need work? Cannot get any thing done? Then you all deserve ZERO!

If cannot get one third, should try to get one quarter.

Netizens commenting on the logo praised the designer for creating a visually appealing logo filled with so much meaning. Several netizens congratulated Kelly while some even made a reference to Sengkang GRC MP Jamus Lim’s “cockles of my heart” remark and quipped that the waves look like the shells of cockles.

Sengkang Town Council fixes IT glitch affecting cash payments for S&CC

The new Sengkang Town Council (SKTC) has fixed an IT problem that prevented it from receiving cash payments for service and conservancy charges (S&CC) at its offices on Wednesday.

The glitch had occurred because configurations for the front-end collection systems were not in place, but had been resolved as of yesterday, said the Workers' Party-run town council in a statement.

It added that residents have been able to pay their S&CC at the town council's offices since 8am.

On Wednesday, SKTC had issued a statement about the problem after taking over the full management of estates in Sengkang GRC that were previously under two People's Action Party (PAP)-run town councils.

In that statement, it said that staff at SKTC discovered in the morning that the configurations were not done.

"During our engagements with the existing IT vendor for the Town Council Management System (TCMS), we were assured of the functionality of the system.

"However, the staff of SKTC noted at 8am this morning that configurations for the front-end collection systems were not in place," the Wednesday statement said.

It added that SKTC was "working closely with the IT vendor to restore operational functionality of the TCMS as soon as possible".

When asked, Sengkang GRC MP Louis Chua, who is the town council's vice-chairman, declined to comment on whether it had hired the IT vendor or if it was a previous vendor hired by the PAP-run town councils.

Sengkang GRC, with more than 120,000 voters, is made up of Buangkok, Compassvale and Rivervale wards, formerly under the Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council (PRPTC), and the Anchorvale ward, formerly under Ang Mo Kio Town Council (AMKTC).

WP won Sengkang GRC with 52.12 per cent of the votes at the July 10 General Election.

SKTC formally took over the management and maintenance of these areas on Wednesday, and said it would continue to work with EM Services and CPG Facilities Management, the two managing agent firms that had been working with PRPTC and AMKTC.

SKTC added: "Both managing agents have affirmed their commitment to SKTC, and that they will work in close collaboration to deliver the highest standards of estate management service to Sengkang residents.

"With both managing agents continuing township management operations, residents of Sengkang GRC can look forward to a smooth handover and continuity in the provision of township services at Sengkang Town."

The PAP town councils had said on Tuesday that arrangements have been made for residents who pay their S&CC through Giro or other recurring payment schemes to continue doing so without disruption.

Jamus Lim Wikipedia page

Jamus Jerome Lim Chee Wui (born c. 1976) is a Singaporean economist and politician. A member of the Workers' Party, he was elected into the Parliament of Singapore as a representative of the Sengkang Group Representation Constituency for Anchorvale following the 2020 Singaporean general election.

Lim attended Catholic High School, Raffles Institution and Raffles Junior College as part of his early education in Singapore. He was also a service medic in the Singapore Armed Forces during his national service in Singapore.

Lim graduated from the University of Southern Queensland in 1998 with a Bachelor of Business in economics. He then obtained a Master of Science in economics from the London School of Economics in 2000, and went on to the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he graduated in 2006 with a Master of Arts in politics and a doctorate in international economics. In 2018, Lim graduated from Harvard University with a Master of Liberal Arts in history.

Lim worked at the World Bank for seven years, from 2007 to 2014, serving in its Development Prospects Group and specialising in long-term macroeconomic projections.[9] He was also an economist at the Institute for Southeast Asian Studies and the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority. In 2018, he joined the Singapore-based independent investment management firm Thirdrock. Lim is also an associate professor of economics at ESSEC Business School in Singapore. On 23 July 2020, Lim was elected to the council of the Economic Society of Singapore (ESS).

Lim became a member of the Workers' Party in September 2019, having previously volunteered in the party's grassroots activities. On 30 June 2020, he was announced as one of the party's four members contesting the newly-formed Sengkang Group Representation Constituency as part of the 2020 Singaporean general election, alongside Raeesah Khan, He Ting Ru, and Louis Chua. The team were contesting against Lam Pin Min, Ng Chee Meng, Amrin Amin and Raymond Lye of the People's Action Party.

On 1 July 2020, Lim was engaged in a televised political debate with Francis Yuen of the Progress Singapore Party, Chee Soon Juan of the Singapore Democratic Party and Vivian Balakrishnan of the People's Action Party. His performance at the debate was well-received, with PN Balji of The New Paper writing that he was "smelling of roses" and Toh Wen Li of The Straits Times describing Lim as the "star candidate" of the Workers' Party.

On 10 July 2020, following the results of the 2020 Singaporean general election, Lim and his team were elected into the Parliament of Singapore after securing 52.13% of the votes from their constituency, defeating the People's Action Party in an upset victory that secured a second group representation constituency for the opposition. On 3 September 2020, Lim gave his maiden speech in Parliament. He asserted that there was "insufficient compassion in our policymaking process" and proposed that Singapore could implement a "simple, across-the-board minimum wage".

In his younger days, Lim was a rugby player, drummer, and self-declared "Solitaire junkie". He is married. His first daughter was born in November 2019.

Jamus Lim on reviewing Singapore’s justice system
04 Nov 2020 09:48PM(Updated: 12 Nov 2020 05:19AM)

In Parliament on Wednesday (Nov 4), MP Jamus Lim said that Singapore has not been exempt from a global trend of erosion of the rule of law, and when the rule of law is compromised, economic performance suffers. Assoc Prof Lim said the justice system must be perceived to be reliable, as uncertainty about rule of law will affect domestic and foreign investment activity as well as productivity and growth.

Jamus Lim posts photos of workout, but it’s his “Cockles” mask that catches netizens’ eyes

Singapore—Dr Jamus Lim, the Member of Parliament from the Workers’ Party (Sengkang GRC) who became immensely popular during the campaign period leading up to the General Election last July, said in a Nov 5 Facebook post that he had been working out with some volunteers, sharing photos of them at a gym.

It seems as though Dr Lim was promoting a healthy and active lifestyle, but it was his mask that caught the attention of many of his followers. The WP MP was sporting a black face mask that read, “Cockles.”

Dr Lim wrote that he had been working out with Yudhishthra Nathan, whom he described as “our long-time volunteer,” at ActiveSG Sengkang Sports Centre gym at Anchorvale Community Center. Dr Lim is in charge of the Anchorvale constituency of Sengkang.
