You cannot hold a by election unless the MP vacates his/her seat due to death, corruption or voluntary resignation.

Then how did Teo Chee Hean came in through the 1992's by-election in Marine Parade GRC?

Concede to that. But the point is Chee has show nothing but clinging on to the belieft that democracy is the cure for Singapore.

Political pathy is bad for the nation future.

A good democracy allows its political parties to arouse citizens' interest in political affairs of the State and allows its citizens to participate in the political process fully.

A democracy also also for too many factions and weak coalition governments to form. Even before that happens rebuilting of the destroyed infrastructure should not be in the hands of those who lcing on to ideals like democracy.

A democracy does not always lead to a coalition government.

A peaceful change in government does not result in chaos and violence, and therefore does not destroy infrastructure.

There is no real democracy in the world.

Democracies have then tendency to lead to small factions viying for power.

There is no such thing a a "peaceful" change.

All the developed countries mostly have two dominant parties. Eg UK, Australia, New Zealand etc

Change of governments is peaceful.

CSJ understands his trade better than we laymen do. He is a trained neuro psychologist and understands the need for fundamental changes in the Singaporean psyche.

Qin Shi Huang walled up China physically. What do you reckon happened in SG? Is a mental barricade surrounding us? A sour ground is bad, discontentment is bad. Bad for votes, bad for the ruling party. CSJ is playing show hand. He gambled his work and reputation to catalyze change. That's why he has my respect. His methods though extreme really indicates the grit in that man. Was Suchow a gamble? Was Shincorp a gamble?

Political power when held too long is like an overipe fruit. We need checks and balances. His actions start a small ripple, I do tend to think the ripple effect affects many of us psychologically in some ways.

...was Suchow a gamble? Was Shincorp a gamble?

Hi, welcome to the board. The reason why i delete off the rest when quoting is because this is a requirement from the board owner.

There is one big difference between the Suchow/Shincorp and CSJ's gamble. The first gamble was done using the public's money. The second gamble was done using his own money.

In the final analysis, even if CSJ open up the government's mindset towards individual human rights, what good will it do for the majority of voters? Do they stand up and clap? Does it translate into more votes for him, allow him entry into Parliament and thus recoup all his financial losses in the transition years?

Ours is a pragmatic society. Some charities, religious leaders, politicians have hearts which worship money in truth but not in words. Perhaps it is time that oppositions spread one fundamental truth to the voters: that no one, not even the opposition owes you a living. For that, you owe it to yourself to decide through your single vote.

CSJ's greater achievements would be to give an alternative to the voters.

Based on the publicity generated about him, he would have to work harder, so that his achievements are not at the abstract level but at the level where it counts - the votes.

CSJ understands his trade better than we laymen do. He is a trained neuro psychologist and understands the need for fundamental changes in the Singaporean psyche.....

This statement whilst it shows CSJ for his deep-seated commitment to the people, also carries the seeds for his current failures.

Why?

Because he feels that he can give the voters something they need. But it is not something they want.

"CSJ's greater achievements would be to give an alternative to the voters."

That's exactly what I've been saying. Even in Western history, giving policies came first before human rights.

Chee is campaigning not just for human rights, but also rule of law, free speech, freedom of associations and assemblies.

But no economic, defence, trade, health, societal plan.

Those parts which SDP would do differently if it were in power have already been set out in their manifestoes. The rest will remain status quo until a review is warranted.

It has continuously put up policy discussion papers on their party political website.

A coalition of civil society and political society coming together and demanding change—a peaceful non violent color revolution for Singapore to bring down PAPs one party system of government and replace it with a pluralistic democractic system that embodies independent transparency and accountability. This is in effect what Dr Chee appears to be trying to acheive.

Another interesting insight on Dr Chee's "end game" may perhaps also be gleaned from Alex Au's post on Dr Chee's recent court case with LK/LHL in his YawningBread Blog.

The fact that LKY and the PAP government continue to negatively engage Dr Chee is perhaps also instructive. I for one cannot understand why LKY and the PAP government persist in giving Dr Chee such 'free' publicity instead of taking out the 'oxygen' from under him i.e. ignore Dr Chee altogether, assuming of course the PAP government and Dr Chee's detractors are correct that Dr Chee's cause does not and shall not resonate with Singaporeans in general.

Pluralism has its failures. More importantly, you can say democracy is so many breaths, but that may not build the nation in the future.

LKY has always been giving S'poreans a message that he will exact a heavy price on those who refuse to play by his unspoken and written rules of political engagement. Chee has broken those rules and if he is not taken to task, others will soon follow suit.

It is for the purpose of maintaining the political status quo that, even if it meant giving Chee publicity, LKY will still want to make Chee pay a price.

The relevant question to ask is whether S'pore is ready for a more open and democratic society.
