Teachers to pay for parking in schools from August

SINGAPORE - Teachers in primary and secondary schools, as well as junior colleges, will need to pay for parking from August.

Season outdoor parking will cost $75 a month during school terms, and $15 per month during the school holidays in June, November and December, The Straits Times has learnt.

For sheltered lots, they will have to pay $100 monthly during school terms and $20 monthly during the holidays.

Motorcyclists will be charged $13 per month for uncovered lots, and $2 during the holidays. For sheltered parking their fees will be $14 and $3 during school term and holidays respectively.

Teachers were briefed by their school leaders on Monday (March 26) on the carpark rates, which are slightly cheaper than HDB parking. There are about 360 primary and secondary schools and junior colleges.

Besides school teachers and staff, others who might need to pay for season parking include canteen stall operators, coaches and instructors who go to schools regularly. Parking fees will not apply to ad hoc visitors such as parents or volunteers.

The move comes after a review of free parking in schools started in 2015 by the Ministry of Education.

An Auditor-General's Office report had in the same year faulted some educational institutions for allowing their staff to park for free, or at fees below the market rate.

Such practices "are tantamount to providing hidden subsidies for vehicle parking", it had said in an annual report of financial lapses in public sector bodies.

All five polytechnics and the Institute of Technical Education have started charging for parking on its premises since October last year.

Staff in those institutions are paying season parking rates of $80 and $110 per month for surface and sheltered carparks respectively.

Why should teachers be exempted?

They get cheap food in school canteens, 2 periods of school holidays (ok la they go back at times to do some shit) and end work before 6 everyday! What else they want? A plaque every year for their work?

Five Reasons Teachers are Pissed Off at MOE

The removal of free parking in schools is just the tip of the iceberg.

1. Teachers are underpaid.

Although the starting pay of teachers is now at an attractive $3,010 for graduates and $1,580 for non-graduates, there is much to be said for the wage progression thereafter.

Even Labour MP Zainal Sapari, who was an educator for 20 years, pointed this out in 2014 when he asked MOE for the percentage of principals, VP and heads of departments who are being paid according to their appointment.

And those who are underpaid even after 5 years of holding that appointment.

There was no answer from MOE, which felt it was not “useful to give the figures”.

Helloooo….. If the top educators aren’t even paid fairly, what about the others down the pay scale?

I remember one friend (who taught in a Primary School) feeling upset over getting a pay raise of $70 a year, when he put in so much effort to be a good teacher. He eventually left to join a private tuition centre.

2. Teachers have too many CCAs.

It is simply not enough to teach two or three subjects, but also think of ways to occupy the students in CCAs which some teachers have no clue about, other than the fact they were arrowed to do it.

Then that friend must be a damn lousy teacher. How is it possible to get a $70 raise?

What is so special about Teachers? About time all these fuckers are made to pay for parking.
You have money to buy car you jolly well have money to pay for parking!

Next group to impose parking charges are the freeloaders and lazy bums at SAF (as the title suggested).

They are the lowest of scums. Regulars get free food, free parking, good pay, cheap alcohol at the bar etc.

any free f%$%$%??

I am worried that grassroots leaders like myself may be next. Will our free parking privileges also be removed in spite of our numerous contributions to the grassroots?

Yours will be among the first to removed because you have contributed crap all this while.

In SG, nothing is free even for so call civil servants unless you are minister.

Most teachers are motherfuckers and bitches. They should pay for everything.

my uncle say KNN if teachers complain celery low then still buy car and worry and complain about parking fees then KNN KNN is a self inflicted sinkie losers KNN.

Why must teachers use a car? Take bus or walk like the students!

a wise move
teachers must pay for their parking lots
they are not exempted
everyone pays for their parking lots
so this is a very clever and wise move
well done MOE
well done

Teaching is a thankless shitty profession but a noble one. But since nobility will not enrich anyone and most of us know that, the dumbfuck gahman ought not to erect obstacles and dissuade people from being teachers. I am sure free parking is a perk that teachers like to enjoy.

Let's have no illusions about teaching as a profession. Sure, there are noble ones who feel they can educate the future generation. But most are deadbeats who just can't find a better job or are afraid to venture out.
