I don’t think these two are that great except for being patronised by the government ...

I know of a lawyer who was very very good in finer point of law ...was a teaching staff in the U .,.left the job nd took up private practice ...could not get along with clients and quarrelled with them too ...cannot survive ....went back to be an academic

We are talking about Singapore courts. Where the judge says that campaigning inside the polling station does not violate the X km no campaigning radius rule.

It is the same for medicine. A lot of it is customer service too. You have to take all the whims and fancies of customers and clients.

Give them what they want.

Academics cannot stomach this because they sit on the moral high horse in ivory towers of education. And teach all this idealistic bullshit to students who then come out and realise the real world is not like this in fact very opposite and the law society and medical council will never side with the lawyer or doctor but always with the client or patient. Then they unlearn.

The ivory towers cause a lot of harm to the young professionals early careers.

my take on singapore law is the question of discretion and absence of jury ...in short,LKY wanted his civil admin and courts very bottled ...meaning the administrators has to follow mandatory rules and regulation leaving no chance for discretion...and without discretionary powers the people who sits on the bench delivering judgements are no more than robots ...so, even lawyers don't defend their clients knowing what is in store for them...so they usually sue for leniency for lower sentences

very very different where the judges exercise discretionary powers endowed with them more so of a jury is involved ...this is how a justice system should work .

Exactly. So Shan and Singh have all the qualities that make them successful in Singapore. They are well connected. One is the law minister. And I am sure they are great with customer service skills too.

So what makes a "good" lawyer depends on which country you are in.

The same lawyer that is great in country X may be totally useless in country Y.
