To those who are working in the fields of #STEM, what inspired you to pursue that path?
Sec 2 students from Kuo Chuan Presbyterian Secondary School got to explore biotechnology at Science Centre Singapore. They tried their hand at techniques like micro-pipetting and conducted a bacteria transformation experiment.
They also learnt how genetic engineering can be used to treat genetic diseases such as diabetes and how to screen and diagnose the disease. Raghav shared, “It was very exciting to learn about insulin, why it is needed for humans and how we can make it in a lab!”
Experiences like these enable students to see the role Science and Tech play in society, and the impact of such industries on our future. Kudos to our schools, for helping our students discover and develop their interests and aspirations!

We welcomed distinguished academics and industry leaders from around the world at the 12th International Academic Advisory Panel meeting this week. We heard many inspiring ideas on how universities can re-envision their mission and reshape themselves to meet future needs.
Here are my personal takeaways:
1. A more uncertain and complex world requires greater interdisciplinary solutioning, specifically forming teams with interdisciplinary skills that can marry diverse perspectives. However, we must continue to strengthen our students’ foundation to build confidence in future learning.
2. We should explore developing new platforms to better encourage workers to embrace lifelong learning. For instance, our institutions can leverage their different strengths and come together to digitise their offerings using a common platform, offering high-quality micro credentials at a flexible pace for our adult learners.
3. We can rethink how we organise our institutes of higher learning to provide the structure to support these goals. The management of a complex university ecosystem requires diverse skill sets - this would also allow our universities to excel in their missions, regardless of research, teaching or enabling lifelong learning.
In addition, the Panel agreed that our AUs work should together with international partners to develop a more holistic set of metrics in measuring excellence beyond university rankings. This should take into account each university’s distinct purpose and mission.
Am extremely grateful to our international friends for their time and their valuable perspectives. Until next time!

Happy Father’s Day! Even as we celebrate this occasion with our fathers and father figures, it’s also an occasion to celebrate the family.
I joined our friends from Centre for Fathering DadsforLife.sg at the ‘Dad’s Day Out Challenge in Sentosa’ this morning. Glad to see many spending quality family time with their loved ones.
I wish everyone the best on their parenting journey!

Have you ever gone camping with your children?
Last month, 50 dads got to experience this by spending a Saturday in school with their children. Bedok Green Primary School Fathers’ Group, together with the school’s Partnership Committee, worked together to organise the “Let’s Go Camping with Dad” event.
Undaunted by the rain, the campers pitched tents indoors, made kites to fly in the sports hall, did outdoor cooking, and made a camp banner. The fathers also had circle time, led by Centre for Fathering staff, to get to know one another better. The event wrapped up with the children presenting thank you cards to their dads. It was a short 7-hour day camp, but the memory of it will last much longer.
Mrs Judy Swee, Head of Department (Discipline) who also leads the Partnership Committee, said that the school wanted to share the message that fathers play a significant role in the lives of their children. And the message did hit home. The dads had a great time, sharing that it was “nice to be focused without other distractions”, that they enjoyed the “great bonding”, and “my son said it was the best time in his life”.
To all fathers and father figures, Happy Father’s Day! Let’s continue making memories with our children.
