My JC1 niece wishes to be a vet, any advice here bros..

Depends where you go and who you go with. Same China, Korea, US, Thailand, Malaysia, NZ Australia. So.......

BRo BF, if you have better ideas or suggestions; can pm me pLease ?..thanks.

If I can start all over again, I will go to a Theology College in NZ & come back, be a Reverend & make MEGABUCKS!

You don't need to have a degree in Theology to become a successful pastor. Pastor Joseph Prince of New Creation Church doesn't have a Theology degree.

To become a successful pastor, you need to have charisma and know how to talk to convince your congregation to give their money to you. In other words, you need to be able to easily turn words coming out of your mouth into money.

If your family has the means to send her overseas, go for dentistry. Trust me, its big money. If I had the chance to start all over again and is 10 years younger, I would go for this.

Not every career choice should be dictated by money.

Please do not adopt the mindset of gian lui gian png Sinkies.

A vet is a noble profession. I know a few people who are vets.

I think you need to enrol for some course overseas, maybe in Australia or NZ.

Father-mother scholarship would be good.

I had known a childhood neighbour who is now a local vet. I was surprised to see him there. He was a foreign grad. Australia?

I bet you dont own a pet and have never visited or paid one. Each visit to a vet runs up bill up till 200+ to 400+ easily.
It is blady lucrative in Singapore and is growing. Furthermore there are not many good vets around, i say GO FOR IT.

I cannot help people who have not travelled worked or lived in many places in the world under non-Singapore SOEs. There is no such thing as free lunch in the world. You can come back to SGP today with ivy league degree and still be unemployed. If you do not understand this by now, then hope your niece very rich.

There will always be risk. You always have Malaysia. They provide good education if you go to the right unis. They are well recognized enough. We hire them here too.

Your words seem to describe the salesman trade, one of the most untrustworthy professions, besides second-hand car dealers, real estate agents and politicians.

Agree with Lemans.. Vets make good money.. One time trip to the vet can cost more than $100 for a simple check up.. The other day I sent my dog and cat to my usual Vet for their check up.. Cost me $250..

In fact I have high respect for these Vets.. I know of some kind hearted Vets who performed complicated surgeries FOC on stray dogs and cats out of their passion for caring for these animals..

Calling is for those young and naive people. My cousin also have a calling. Straight A's student go and study to be a pastor. When you really tread into society, you'll know that $$$ is better than dreams. My boss gave me a very good advice. "You want to be romantic, can, no problem. But please remember that you need $$$ to buy candles and roses"

Dreams make the money, even in a restrictive country. Many people want a job of their choice so that they can help others better from their calling so what gives you the right to try to stop them?

And so what if she makes $100,000 a month if she's doing something she doesn't like, nor is she being true to herself? She'd end up getting high-strung and may see even her own health deteriorate in no time, and all those figures by then count for nothing.

Save the bland and meaningless money lecture for natural flops like you and your boss instead.

I can become a parttime vet already since I know how to cure my animals if they are sick or injuired .

Of one wanted to be a vet , he or she must love animals when young .

Well said !! If you have Dreams and passions .. $$$ will come to you naturally .

Seems she's not making any headways in trying to secure a LocaL Uni program here.So what are her
options then ?..can she try to Land a schoLarship of sorts from some foreign Uni ?.Thanks..

she may want to opt for the poly route, ngee ngan poly has a diploma is vet course after she graduated she may proceed to Australia to further her studies. There may be a waiver for the 1st year course. however , most importantly, is she afraid of dissecting a frog...........if she's afraid then she can forget about it

Fishypie, I don't know what kind of obligations you have towards your neice but a veterinary medicine degree is longer & more difficult than a regular medical degree, it is also more expensive. An alternative is to train as a veterinary nurse but that's for her to decide.

In Singapore the demand for vets are mainly in the domestic animal catergory, which means your niece will need to specialise in domestic pets/animal care which is ok but not very challenging work for a vet. If she decides to specialise in working with farm animals/animal husbandry or wild animals or equine, it's a lot more challenging & it also pays better than domestic animal care, but do bare in mind that unless she has grown up with exposure to these animals, she will find it very difficult. Also the chances are upon graduation, she'll have to look for work outside of Singapore if she decides to work for the latter. Equine vets are one of the highest paid.

Anyway with such a lengthy degree together with a post graduate certification before she is allowed to practice, don't be surprise that she ends up staying on in the country where she receives her training. If she goes to the UK, RVC is the best http://www.rvc.ac.uk/Undergraduate/International/Index.cfm scholarships for international students at bottom of page.

you need very deep pockets, good luck!

I used to and I paid crazy sum for my pets. I'm just trying to say, comparing dentist and vet, the former is more lucrative. The other reason is, animals can't tell you what's wrong with them but humans could :D
