Out of Touch ST journalist "Joyce Lim" says HDB prices are crashing cause her niece paid only less than a million for a 4 room flat

My parents were PMEs in the late 1960s when they bought 2 landed properties: 1 was the house I grew up in while the other has been giving my retired parents steady rental income for decades.
Your parents are very lucky to make the right investments

My grand mother sold off her 2 houses at Gheyland and did not re-invest into Pandan valley with her good friends…..the rest is history

Back then, my parents just wanted a nice house to raise 3 kids, and another for some rental income. They never expected that these homes would enable them to retire early, and never have to worry about money in their golden years. I call it blessings from God, as I do not believe in luck.

How about you when you are PME? Did you buy 2 so you can rent 1 later?

The purchasing power of a PME couple in the late 1960s is not the same as it is now. However, my wife and I did manage to upgrade out of the HDB heartlands in the early 2000s. Thank God for that.

My pay has always been tagged to 3 oz gold since I start working in 2000s… but now this seems to de-pegged

What it mean hah?

While the aspiration for private home ownership exists among almost all S'poreans, the high costs make it a reality for a relatively small % of the population (less than 20%).
Private home is not for Hardlander
It is used to attract much needed Rainmakers with deep pockets of USD

Please accept my apologies for not being conversant in Singlish, but I gather that you are saying that our salary is now separate from gold prices. It won't automatically move up or down with the price of gold like before.

It still means your parent are living in a better environment than you in the 60s with land as compared to you in a heartland. Guess you will still inherit the land.

You are correct that my parents are far better off having 2 pieces of freehold land. However, I have been living in a condo on a 999-year-lease for the past 24 years. I am glad that I purchased it in the early 2000s before the runaway prices after our govt opened SG's doors for the influx of foreigners.
