These people are so poor that they do not consider it a shame to ask for financial help.
Before you start calling them money grabbing shit, learn to understand most Thais subscribe to the concept of B.O.S.S yes Bros of Share Share. For instance if someone in the family is better off than the rest, he will help the rest financially... and yes the whole clan. It is like "pride to the family" if one member is able to help the rests, they value this more than keeping the money for their own material comfort. Therefore if you marry someone from the family, they extend this B.O.S.S concept to you and expect you to help the family as a matter of fact.
This is not to say that you have to avoid them like plague. You have to educate your Thai partner on the limitations of what one person can do, help them understand many Sinkies do not have that much disposable income to help her family. You can try to instill in her why everyone should be responsible for their own life but this might not get far. If you have set her expectation right, if she understands all these and still wants to be with you, then it is good for you.
The girl will still ask you to help her family occasionally, and if you love your partner then you should not be a miser... i guess if you cannot afford to spare a few thousand dollars a year then you should forget it.
