After taking a breather yesterday, the herd is starting to come back to the betting market. Although the Spain-Swiss match result was a shocker, the Chile victory and the 3-0 thumping of South Africa have inspired punters to make a come back. The betting volume today has therefore been decent. The following is a round up of the betting patterns for the various matches ahead of the opening of the markets in Europe.
Argentina-South Korea - Argentina is the pereninal herd favourite. However based on the performance against Nigeria, the herd is not convinced that Argentina has a decisive advantage over South Korea. Sentiment is probably affected by the recent performance of favourites Brazil and Spain. As such, there is quite a portion of the herd which has gone contrarian for this match. This is the type of match bookies love as it allows squaring of the bets to earn risk free over round.
Greece-Nigeria - Overwhelming, the herd is betting Nigeria to win this match. Greece seems to have been written off as a whipping boy.
France-Mexico - Betting in this match is still thin as it is the last match of the night. Overwhelmingly the herd is buying France to win.

The golden oldie ex-champions finally roared again. Images of the good old days of beating Brazil in Brazil 60 years ago must be surely reconjured all over Uruguay now. I quickly ran through a list of host nation results. I don't see any ever losing by 3-goal margin. South Africa must have suffered the heaviest defeat ever by a World Cup host.
Incidently, I notice that Uruguay did particularly well in World Cup years ending in -0:
1930 : Champions (beat Argentina in Uruguay)
1950 : Champions (beat Brazil in Brazil)

Argentina squad got enough talent to cover this hole. The million dollar question is what strategy Mr Hand-of-God is going to use tonight. Most of the other managers have previous play record in the various leagues that allows you to make an educated guess of what they will do. Mr Hand-of-God however got no record. Still too early to say but his play strategy from the Argentina-Nigeria match suggest that he is not the inexperienced clown that many in the sports press make him out to be.
