http://www.straitstimes.com/forum/letters-on-the-web/why-make-singles-pay-more-for-2-room-flats

I chanced upon the Housing Board's terms in its sales launch, one of which states that "singles who apply for the two-room flats under the Single Singapore Citizen Scheme will pay $15,000 more than married couples".

It is puzzling why singles have to pay more. Remaining single should not be discriminated against and penalised, much less by the authorities, which have been trying to build an inclusive society.

The demographic landscape of Singapore has changed in the past decades, with more choosing to remain single, or marrying at a later age. These singles could opt to purchase their own flat if they meet HDB's eligibility criteria.

Unfortunately, HDB policies do not seem to have taken this demand into consideration.

All Singaporeans, whether singles or married couples, deserve equal rights to build their home in Singapore.

I couldn't agree more! Charging singles an extra $15,000.00 is nothing but a naked penalty. It is discriminatory and tells you very loud and clear that the HDB is very narrow-minded, profit-oriented and also stupid in thinking that by this disincentive, singles may perhaps try to get hitched!

You see, the HDB is pro-family and pro-marriage. Singles are second class citizens. ;)

The PAP is a bundle of contradictions. They have AWARE which is pro women and anti men. Then they are pro family, which is basically anti-women. Finally they claim to be a government of Singapore, but their FT policies are anti Singaporeans.

No wonder the average Sinkie has becum confused.

$8 cow did not stop any single over 35 from buying any flat type, so why buy 2 room fuck up flat unless...

YOU ARE A LOSER SINKIE SINGLE, right? LOLOLOLOLOLOoLoLoLoL

Singles is the lowest class, second class is a few classes above that.:o

FT class, PeeR class, New shitizen class (heard that they get much more subsidises), RC member class,....etc

Don't know why we serve NS for fuck.

This is where I strongly refute the notion that Singapore is a "first world nation." A peoples with a higher mindset will not have so many categories to differentiate society. In this issue here, there could be a distinction between Citizen, and Non-Citizen, and under the category of Citizen, ALL have the same and equal rights.

Cheers!

why do you think singles aged 30+, 40+, are still staying with their parents?

dont be stupid, when u book hotel rooms do u get cheaper price for booking couple/twin rooms or single rooms?of course couples get cheaper rates.same goes for real estate.

What u r saying is based purely on commercial logic. Residing in a 2-roomed HDB flat is different from staying in a hotel room. One has a certain degree of permanence whereas the other is impermanent. My argument boils down to this : what is the point of being a citizen esp. when one is single and being discriminated against on something so basic as public housing.

it's only $15,000. that's the amount i lost (on paper) in 1 stock in today's market. ;)
