Last night, on a cool and wet December evening, WP Fengshan group had our last weekly house visits in Fengshan for the year 2015. Besides listening to feedback on municipal and national policy issues as we normally do on house visits, it was also a great opportunity for us to extend our best wishes to residents for the New Year ahead.

Our group started the year 2015 as part of the WP East Coast group doing weekly house visits in the former East Coast GRC until Fengshan SMC was carved out from East Coast GRC just before the General Election.

I am extremely grateful to all our volunteers for the hard work and sacrifice throughout this year, both during and outside the GE period.

I look forward to continue working together with our fantastic volunteers in 2016. We are lining up new plans for outreach and activities for residents, while continuing to look at how we can serve residents and improve our outreach.

We also look forward to working together with our WP East Coast group colleagues for some common activities and projects next year.

I take this opportunity to wish our volunteers a happy new year and best wishes for the new year.

On behalf of everyone in our WP Fengshan group, I wish all Fengshan residents and indeed all Singaporeans the very best in 2016. May you have good health, happiness, joy and peace in the new year.

In the 2015 Year in Review panel discussion, to be broadcast today on Channel News Asia at 8pm, I spoke about how public discourse and much of the civics that is taught in schools is a narrative about survival. The focus tends to be on how we are an extremely vulnerable nation. And how we must continuously worry about survival. Well, if we do not survive there is no tomorrow. That much is true. But we must survive for a purpose, we must survive so as to pursue some goal. There is not enough discussion in our public space and in our schools about what we want to survive to do. What we should cultivate is public discussion, and above all discussion and debate in our schools, about what values and goals should define Singapore in the 21st century. Economic betterment (and how should we define that)? Quality of life? Equality of opportunity? The Democratic Society of our Pledge? A deep sense of community and social solidarity? A collective moral purpose? Our politics and our education should never forget the dangers that could threaten our survival. But we need to go beyond that and focus on what we mean by a thriving and flourishing Singapore. And in that discussion, we should recognize that some of the things that are said to make us vulnerable – like our multi-racial and multi-religious character – are also tremendous sources of strengths that can be turned to our advantage, for example in the quest for innovation and value-creation. And we should never be so complacent as to assume that what we have now is good enough, that we already have as much flourishing as we will ever need, that this is the best of all possible worlds, that we have more to teach other nations than to learn….that we have arrived. That kind of thinking is the biggest threat to a flourishing Singapore…and, in the longer-term, to Singapore’s very survival.

Our official response to Zaobao's questions for this article (http://www.zaobao.com.sg/zpolitics/news/story20160105-567186). Please see Chinese translation below.

The Workers' Party believes that elections for our political system should not dilute the individual voter's voice and should therefore be run on single seats, with individual MPs fully accountable to constituents. The Group Representation Constituencies (GRCs) should be abolished and the Non-Constituency MP (NCMP) scheme would be unnecessary, including amendments to the scheme in 2010. However, the Workers' Party would accept individual eligible candidate's decision to take up the NCMP position in recognition of the opportunity given to us to contribute to Parliamentary debate.

Therefore, as the Workers' Party has made known its stand on NCMP positions for the coming session of Parliament in a statement released 16 September 2015, we concur with Ms Lee Li Lian's decision to vacate the NCMP position and with Mr Dennis Tan's decision to accept the NCMP position. We also decided to nominate Mr Leon Perera from the East Coast GRC team to take up the NCMP position and, should Parliament resolve to fill the NCMP seat to be vacated by Ms Lee, Associate Professor Daniel Goh Pei Siong to fill the vacated seat, since the next succeeding candidate would be a member of the Workers' Party East Coast GRC team.

Parliament will have to decide on the fate of the vacated NCMP seat when it opens on15 January 2016.
