A three-bedroom stripped-down house in Titoki Place in Pukete (Hamilton) that was decontaminated of methamphetamine was sold at an auction for $410,000 on Wednesday.

The house in Lockwood, marketed as “previously contaminated”, had been stripped to bare walls and ceiling. “Pukete is an established suburb with an average house sale price of $542,800,” said a report.

“There is a problem right throughout New Zealand,” said estate agents Harcourts Hamilton general manager Brian King.

“An experiment done in Auckland proved that nearly all banknotes tested positive for meth. Yet a public emergency wasn’t declared and the notes weren’t burnt but these were at the same levels that houses were being tested at and people being told to get out of their houses,” said Dr Nick Kim, Massey University environmental chemistry senior lecturer.

The Auckland Regional Public Health Service (ARPHS) has confirmed the outbreak and says it is tracing people who have been in contact with those who have been diagnosed with the disease and "following usual protocols" to stop it spreading further.

Medical Officer of Health Dr David Sinclair said it was unclear how the outbreak started.

"We're trying to work that out. We've got some clues but other things we haven't sorted out yet, so that will take a little while to sort out yet. But in general typhoid is imported. It comes from people returning to New Zealand from the Pacific or from Southeast Asia."

The disease is potentially fatal.

Academics say they are being pressured to change assessments, ignore cheating and pass incompetent students so their institutions can pocket the students' fees.

The union's Manukau Institute of Technology branch president Jill Jones said her faculty was given a target to pass 85 per cent of students.

"We have been pressured to change assessments, ignore cheating, pass students who are between 45 and 48 per cent," one academic said.

Another said: "The emphasis on successful completion rates is hurting education standards. Lecturers [are] under intense pressure to pass students by managers; leading to acts of shameful manipulations, low quality assessments and exams."

Student cheated three times and still passed

A student caught cheating three times was still allowed to pass the course, his lecturer says.

The former lecturer, who asked to remain anonymous, said he resigned from the Manukau Institute of Technology (MIT) in protest after the institute refused to discipline the student.

"The Head of Faculty refused to discipline or sanction the student, and instead tried to place the blame for the student cheating on to me for being too strict with marking," the lecturer said.

"Appeals by me to the Student Conduct Manual fell on deaf ears, and the Head of Faculty decision to give the student three free passes on cheating was supported at the highest level of management.

"Working in New Zealand tertiary education feels like working in the twilight zone, where students receiving a fail grade are always an unacceptable outcome for management, and student cheating is reframed as 'staff failing to provide adequate student support'.

"It's not just MIT. In my experience as an academic moderator, it's [almost] everywhere, both private and state-funded tertiary education."

Fishing industry monitor is wholly owned by Seafood New Zealand - investigation finds.

Greenpeace will take a complaint to the Auditor General after discovering the company responsible for monitoring large chunks of the fishing industry is wholly owned by the industry's biggest lobby group.

The company, named FishServe, has been contracted by the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI) for the past 20 years to monitor overfishing, take catch reports, manage quotas and decide on licences.

A Greenpeace investigation found the company is not only owned by the industry group Seafood New Zealand, but it operates from the same office and shares staff.

An investor was told that the $65,000 he paid to buy an Albany Heights Villa unit "would be kept safe in a law practice's trust account for the construction ... and that the developer, Albany Heights Villa, would not be able to use the money in the trust account for other purposes.

Point To Point Holdings went into liquidation in January leaving 30 houses at various stages of construction between Tuakau and Whangarei.

For some of the homeowners it's the second time in as many years they have been stung by a building company, with homeowners in the Pukekohe and Tuakau areas also losing money when NZ Home Builders went into voluntary administration in 2015.

And Stephen Foley, the director of Point To Point Holdings, now renamed HPTP 2014 Ltd, once headed up another building company that collapsed, was previously made bankrupt, and was a banned director for almost three years, though not at the time Point To Point Holdings was set up.

In a recent email from MSD I was informed that Section 70 direct deduction policy applies to pensions that falls under the following:

a) be administered by or on behalf of the Government of that country;

b) form part of a program providing benefits, pensions, or periodical allowances for any of the contingencies for which benefits, pensions, or allowances may be paid under this Act, or under the New Zealand Superannuation and Retirement Income Act 2001 or the Veterans' Support Act 2014;

c) and not be a Government occupational pension.

As a Government occupational pension is a tier two pension exactly the same as a UK pension then the question must be asked why is one NOT subject to direct deduction policy and the other is?

On further enquiry I was also informed that there is no separate legislation covering tier two pensions so how can Section 70 direct deduction be applied where no legislation/law is in place to cover it.

Immigrants from all over the world including many New Zealanders who have worked overseas are having their tier two employer/employee funded pensions stolen by a Government who are using questionable policies to protect their own staff pensions at the expense of others.

They tell us we would be disadvantaging ordinary Kiwis and be “double dipping” if we were allowed to have two pensions despite having funded them ourselves.

Given the above facts immigrants are the ones being disadvantaged not the ordinary Kiwis. It is time Government came clean and stopped hiding the truth about how they steal pensions from immigrants living New Zealand.

The chief executive of the Ministry of Social Development has been referred to Solicitor-General over 'repugnant' use of fake names in documents

:oops:The chief executive of the Ministry of Social Development has been referred to the Solicitor-General after his agency repeatedly broke a statutory order not to use false names and signatures in legal documents.

The ministry has been using pseudonyms when dealing with some beneficiaries, an unlawful practice labelled "repugnant to the most fundamental concept of justice" in a stinging tribunal ruling released this week.

The ruling, from the little-known Social Security Appeals Authority, revealed despite warnings - and a 2016 undertaking from chief executive Brendan Boyle that the practice of using false names during benefit review hearings would stop - it had not.

Boyle was found to have filed a further seven documents containing fake names and signatures since he was told not to, the authority said, which it absolutely condemned.

"The concept of 'faceless' decision-makers in a statutory process of independent review is repugnant to the most fundamental concept of justice," it said.

"In New Zealand's open justice system, the most serious crime is prosecuted by prosecutors whose identity is not hidden, members of juries who do not have their identities concealed hear cases, and judges do not have their identities hidden either."

Without being identified, there was no way to ensure the members of the committee were not biased, or if they were fit to be on the committee, it said.



Fallout since the decision was made public

Lawson's lawyer Tony Ellis wrote to Hughes this morning saying in his opinion it was appropriate the State Services Commissioner investigate.

He said it was "alarming" that Boyle had stood by his decision in that it raised concern as to whether Boyle abided by the law.

"At the very least such a statement shows poor judgment, and queries the chief executive's fitness to hold such an office," Ellis said.

He noted the commissioner had the power to remove a chief executive from office.

The Minister of Social Development, Anne Tolley, has not responded to requests for comment.

"He might be head of the department, but nothing about this required his intervention.

"It is very clear to me that senior civil servants are operating right outside the law and that they are, in fact, straight into a conspiracy.

"A conspiracy is when two or more decided they would break the law and that's what they did in tandem with these ministers".

"What you've got here is a disgusting little cartel playing filthy politics and at the highest level of our civil service."


He said it was "the politicisation of the public service".
