SINGAPORE – There are plans to have more women candidates in the upcoming general election, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong, noting his hope to increase the representation of women in Parliament.
“To me, having that diversity in the team is very useful,” said PM Wong, urging the public to support the women political candidates when they are fielded.
“Throughout my working life, I have benefited from working with men and women who bring a wider range of perspectives and help contribute to better solutions and better decision-making,” he said at the People’s Action Party (PAP) Women’s Wing conference on Aug 31.

PAP women MPs now hold close to one-third of the seats in Parliament. In contrast, all PAP MPs were men in the 1970s and early 1980s.
There is still work to be done to build an inclusive society, said PM Wong, noting that advancing the cause for gender equality in Singapore is not a zero-sum issue.
“Equality for women does not mean that men get less,” he said. “Gains that women make in society do not mean that men will inevitably lose out.”

He said that in some countries, there has been more divergence in views between men and women.

Boys and young men also struggle with challenges like education and mental health, he said.
“If they feel their concerns are not adequately addressed, men and young boys, then, out of a sense of insecurity, some may see the movement for equality for women as a movement against men,” said PM Wong, adding that this must not happen in Singapore.
“The fact is that we are all in this together,” he said, adding that men and women have to work and learn together, get married, form families and raise children together.

This is why he focused on these issues during his first National Day Rally speech earlier in August, mandating four weeks of paternity leave and introducing a new shared parental leave scheme.

The PAP Women’s Wing started in 1989, 35 years after the PAP was established and three years after the youth wing was set up, PAP Women’s Wing chairwoman Sim Ann said at the conference.
“The relatively recent arrival of the Women’s Wing in the PAP family tells us that getting more women involved in political work has never been easy,” she said at the event held at the Grand Copthorne Waterfront Hotel to celebrate the 35th anniversary of the Women’s Wing.
She acknowledged the first three women MPs elected in 1984 – Dr Dixie Tan, Mrs Yu-Foo Yee Shoon and Dr Aline Wong – who ended a 14-year drought of not having women represented in Parliament.
Speaking to the media after the celebration, Ms Sim said PM Wong’s commitment to fielding more women in the coming election is a sign of encouragement and affirmation for women’s capabilities and leadership skills.
It is also encouraging to those involved in ground activism, Ms Sim said, adding that there will be more women stepping up.

When asked by the media if there is a target number for women fielded, Ms Sim said that in Singapore, there is no quota for representation and leadership, including political representation.
“It is very important for us to know that we hold these positions because of our merit and our ability,” she said.
A numerical target is not key here, Ms Sim said. “I think the fact that PM Wong has shared so openly about his confidence in fielding women speaks volumes about his belief and faith in women’s capabilities.”
The PAP Women’s Wing will continue to stay close to the ground, said Ms Sim, to ensure that it can identify issues that are of interest primarily to women but also to men.
Some of these areas include women’s health-related concerns, support for women in all stages of life, including marriage and parenthood, and caregiver concerns.
Ms Sim added: “We would like to advocate for policy changes that make it easier for women to fulfil their fullest potential, and we believe that this makes for a Singapore that is better for women.”

Lawrence had a productive meeting.

·
Had a productive meeting with United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres today.
Since assuming office in 2017, he has steered the UN through challenging times, from the COVID-19 pandemic to escalating geopolitical tensions.
His leadership in defending the UN Charter and upholding international law has been exemplary. He has consistently urged global leaders to address critical issues like poverty and climate change, even as we confront emerging challenges such as AI.
I conveyed Singapore’s deep appreciation for the Secretary-General’s steadfast commitment to the rules-based multilateral system, which is vital for small states like ours.
Singapore remains fully committed to supporting the UN’s efforts to strengthen multilateralism, including the upcoming Summit of the Future.

Singapore and India share a deep and enduring friendship, built on strong economic and people-to-people ties.
Had a productive meeting with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at Parliament House today.
We have set out a forward-looking agenda for the next phase of our bilateral relations. This includes closer cooperation in areas like sustainability, advanced manufacturing, digital technologies and connectivity.
We are also upgrading the Singapore-India Strategic Partnership to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. This is a timely move as we expand our partnership in new and mutually beneficial areas, and celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations and the 10th anniversary of our Strategic Partnership next year.
We look forward to strengthening our ties

Lawrence wants to take Singapore aviation to greater heights!

Lawrence Wong

·
Over the past 40 years, Changi and Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore have transformed Singapore aviation. From our early days at Paya Lebar, we have become an international air hub, with the entire aviation ecosystem now forming a key part of our economy.
Importantly, Changi Airport has a special place in the shared experiences and memories of all Singaporeans. For me, growing up in the 70s and 80s, a family trip to Changi was always a special treat. We enjoyed watching planes from the viewing gallery and celebrated special occasions at Swensen’s!
As we celebrate CAAS’ 40th anniversary, we also honour the contributions made by everyone in the aviation family, past and present. The next bound of our aviation story will be even more exciting, as we embark on the construction of Terminal 5. Let us continue to work together to take Singapore aviation to greater heights!

One Punggol is officially open! It’s an integrated centre for residents — offering community services, retail and F&B options, all under one roof.
Punggol continues to develop quickly. Each time I visit, there’s something new to see. And it will continue to get better. Because we have other developments on the way — like a new Sports Centre; as well as more accessible and convenient public transport.
But in the end, it’s the people who make the difference. I was glad to engage with many Punggol residents, and to experience their warmth and hospitality. They have built strong connections with one another, and they all feel a deep sense of belonging to the town. This spirit is what makes our community thrive and flourish!

Parliament today passed a landmark bill that significantly enhances protections for platform workers, including food delivery personnel and ride-hailing drivers.
As countries around the world wrestle with how best to treat gig workers, debates often arise over whether these individuals should be classified as freelancers, who enjoy flexibility, or employees, with access to full employment rights. Too often, such discussions stall in disagreements between different stakeholders, leaving little room for progress.
In Singapore, we have opted for a balanced approach by introducing a distinct category for platform workers, separate from traditional freelancers and employees. This new framework will provide platform workers with essential protections, such as housing and retirement savings through the CPF system, as well as compensation for work-related injuries. Moreover, they will have the right to representation, empowering them to negotiate collectively with platform operators and strengthen their bargaining power.
This successful outcome is the result of our strong tripartite partnership. Together, we have crafted a solution that benefits both workers and businesses, ensuring fair treatment while preserving the flexibility that gig work offers. It’s another meaningful step forward in our ongoing efforts to renew and strengthen our social compact.

Lawrence met His Holiness Pope Francis and welcomed him to Singapore.

Lawrence Wong

7h ·
Met His Holiness Pope Francis and welcomed him to Singapore. This is his first papal visit here and also the first by a sitting Pope in nearly 40 years.
Singapore and the Vatican enjoy good people-to-people ties. Our history of engagement dates back to the early 1800s, when the first Catholic Mass was celebrated here. Since then Catholic institutions have contributed much to our society - in education, healthcare and across many social areas. We are grateful for their many contributions in our multi-racial and multi-religious society.
Pope Francis and I had a good discussion on the importance of interfaith dialogue and religious harmony. These are common areas of interest between Singapore and the Vatican, and we look forward to continued engagements and cooperation in areas of mutual interests.

Lawrence wants to look out for the wellbeing of our fellow citizens and progress together as one people.

Lawrence Wong

·
More than 50,000 gathered at the National Stadium yesterday for the papal mass. Pope Francis spoke of the importance of love that lies at the foundation of all human works, including the works we have in Singapore. As he put it, without love, there is “no life, no impetus, no reason to act, no strength to build….if there is anything good that exists and endures in this world, it is only because, in innumerable situations, love has prevailed over hate, solidarity over indifference, generosity over selfishness”.
It’s a message that resonates not just with the Catholic community, but also with Singaporeans of all backgrounds. It’s a reminder to us all - to always look out for the wellbeing of our fellow citizens and progress together as one people.
