Great to connect with my juniors in the VJC choir! Brings back fond memories of my time there. Singing in a choir wasn’t easy - it involved countless hours of practice and rehearsals. But the reward of creating beautiful harmonies together was always magical!

Spent the weekend with PAP volunteers distributing care packs to Limbang residents. It was wonderful to see many familiar faces and everyone in good spirits. Let's continue to look out for one another, and build a stronger and more caring community together!

Lawrence is happy to share.

Over the years, HDB has been progressively upgrading the flats in Limbang through the Home Improvement Programme or HIP.
We started with the oldest blocks which were built more than 30 years. The HIP for these blocks have been completed, and we’ve received positive feedback from many residents.
Happy to share that the HIP will now be extended to another batch of flats in Blocks 553-569 (Choa Chu Kang North 6 / Street 52) and Blocks 751-771 (Choa Chu Kang North 5 / Street 54).
We will provide more details about the HIP implementation timeline soon. Even as we upgrade our hardware, let’s also work together to strengthen our heartware - and build a more cohesive and caring community together!

Had a good conversation with the European Council President Charles MICHEL today. We exchanged views on regional and global developments, and the growing strength of the EU-Singapore partnership. In particular, both sides have just concluded negotiations on the EU-Singapore Digital Trade Agreement. This is the first digital trade agreement between the EU and an ASEAN country, and can pave the way for closer links between our two regions.
Look forward to deepening our ties further with the EU!

Lawrence had a good meeting.

·
I had a good meeting with the US Secretary of State Antony Blinken today.
Our bilateral relationship is in excellent shape. We have substantial ties across many areas, from the economy to defence and security. For example, the US is the largest investor in Singapore, with close to 6000 US firms based here, creating many jobs for Singaporeans.
We are expanding our cooperation to new areas, including on critical emerging technologies like AI, as well as civilian nuclear energy (so that we can keep track of new technologies and better assess the future energy possibilities for Singapore).
The US (and Secretary Blinken himself) has to deal with many preoccupations around the world. We are glad they remained committed to engaging Southeast Asia. I look forward to strengthening the partnership with the US, both bilaterally and with ASEAN.

Continuing my tour of different districts — I visited Our Tanjong Pagar to celebrate the traditional Qixi Festival (七夕节) at Keong Saik Street. Got the chance to meet Anne Lim, the great-granddaughter of Tan Keong Saik, and also the representatives from various Chinese clans and dialect groups.
In true Singaporean spirit, we celebrate the festivities as one people. It was good to see residents of all backgrounds coming together, and also to visit the nearby Sri Layan Sithi Vinayagar temple.
Tanjong Pagar is a shining example of Singapore's rich diversity, and our commitment to multi-racial harmony. Let's continue to celebrate our diverse cultures and nurture our vibrant community spirit!

Delivered my first National Day Message as Prime Minister.
We are facing a more difficult external environment. The challenges ahead are formidable. But we can overcome them together. These are some of our priorities:
✅
Forge new opportunities for our people. We will help every Singaporean acquire new capabilities throughout their careers.
✅
Redouble efforts to keep the cost of living stable. We will continue to cushion the impact of inflation. We will keep public housing accessible, affordable and fair for all.
✅
Strengthen our system of social support, by enhancing support for families and helping Singaporeans bounce back stronger from employment setbacks.
I will share more on our strategies at the National Day Rally. Despite the challenges ahead, we will take Singapore onward and upward. We will take Singapore Forward – Together as One United People.
Happy National Day!

Growing up, I watched the NDP on TV every year. It was a family tradition, and we enjoyed every minute of it.
I have attended many NDPs since then. But this year is special because it is my first NDP as Prime Minister.
The rain in the afternoon was a concern initially. But Singaporeans were unfazed. Spirits were high throughout. Then the skies cleared, just in time for our celebrations!
Many thanks to the NDP EXCO and all participants for your hard work, dedication and passion.
NDP reminds us of who we are, and why we are all proud of this little red dot we call home. Let’s move forward Together, as One United People — Happy National Day, Singapore!

SINGAPORE - Families will get more support, and help will be given to Singaporeans who have met with setbacks in employment, Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said on Aug 8 as he set out how the Government intends to work with the people to build a better Singapore.
PM Wong said he will share plans to boost social safety nets at the National Day Rally, which will be held on Aug 18.
In his first National Day message, PM Wong outlined three strategies to take Singapore forward: Forging new opportunities for the people, redoubling efforts to keep the cost of living stable and strengthening the system of social support.

Addressing the nation in front of Sri Temasek within the Istana grounds, he said the two-storey bungalow – where his temporary office is while the main building is renovated – was where founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew and his family spent the night of Aug 8, 1965.
Mr Lee had tossed and turned that night before Singapore’s formal separation from Malaysia and independence, consumed with worry over how to build a nation from scratch.

What keeps PM Wong awake at night are the challenges brought by developments such as the conflicts in Europe and the Middle East, tensions between the United States and China, growing populism, economic nationalism and protectionism across the world, and politics turning vicious in many countries.

“These are powerful forces that shape our operating environment,” said Singapore’s fourth prime minister.

While Singapore has become a shining red dot on the global stage, the country cannot afford to cruise along and just rely on existing formulas, as the world has changed dramatically, he noted.
“We have to act with agility, foresight and gumption. We have to seek fresh solutions, and chart our own path to take Singapore forward.”
He devoted the rest of his message to the strategies to navigate this new world.

One of them is to strengthen social support, since there will be those who will find it hard to keep pace with the rapid changes, he said.
Singapore’s ageing population will require more help, and so will those who are “sandwiched”, having to look after children as well as elderly parents, he added.
This is why the Government is investing more in social infrastructure, including launching schemes to boost retirement adequacy and the pay of lower-wage workers, as well as initiatives like Healthier SG to take better care of seniors, he said.
“We intend to do more,” he added.
On forging new opportunities, PM Wong said Singapore is investing in research and development, as well as new technologies like robotics and artificial intelligence.
The country has also undertaken massive infrastructure projects, such as Changi Airport Terminal 5 and Tuas Port, to sharpen its competitive edge as a global logistics hub.
He said these strategies are working, with many chief executives of multinational companies telling him in recent weeks that they see Singapore as a stable, trusted and reliable base from which to grow their operations in Asia.

Many multinational companies have opened new facilities here over the past year, including Pfizer, Hyundai, GlobalFoundries and Maersk, he added.
“All these investments will propel our economy forward and create new jobs for Singaporeans,” he said.
As these will be different jobs, which will require new capabilities, the Government will work through the SkillsFuture programme, and also closely with the National Trades Union Congress and employers, to prepare workers for the future economy, he added.
He also pledged to redouble efforts to keep the cost of living stable – an issue which has been top of mind for many Singaporeans.
“Inflation is a major concern for us, as it is for many other countries. We recognise how rising prices are impacting Singaporeans coping with day-to-day expenses,” he said.
PM Wong said that while the Government cannot control global prices, it can and has shielded Singaporeans from the worst effects of global inflation by keeping the Singapore dollar strong. With higher economic growth, wages are also expected to increase in 2024, he noted.
In the meantime, the Government will continue to cushion the impact of inflation – especially on the lower- and middle-income groups – through measures such as CDC vouchers, cash payouts and utilities rebates, he said.
But in the long term, the key to managing cost of living is to foster innovation and improve productivity across the economy so that the increase in wages can outstrip inflation, he added.

PM Wong also addressed housing affordability, which many are concerned about.
So far, the additional cooling measures imposed and ramping up of HDB flat supply have helped to stabilise the property market, he said.
In October, the Housing Board will launch the first batch of flats under the new Standard, Plus and Prime framework, which provides heavier subsidies for flats in choice locations to make them more affordable. Such flats are subject to a subsidy clawback and tighter restrictions.
“These innovations in our housing policies reflect our commitment always to be a nation of home owners. We are determined to keep public housing in Singapore accessible, affordable and fair for all,” PM Wong said.
Even as the Government does more, there is also a need for individual and community effort, he said.
“We encourage each person to work hard, make full use of the support available, and strive their utmost to excel in their jobs and uplift their families,” he added.
“Those who do well for themselves should pay it forward, and give others a hand. That is how we keep our society cohesive, resilient and strong.”
Wrapping up his message, PM Wong said the challenges ahead were formidable, with no quick and easy solutions or model answers to refer to.
But the bigger the problems, the greater is Singapore’s resolve to tackle them head-on, and to turn vulnerabilities into strengths, he added.
“We may be a young nation. But we have overcome much together. So, we have good reasons to be confident about our future. Despite the challenges, we will take Singapore onwards and upwards.”
