Popped by our very own community library at Block 2 Holland Avenue this weekend.
This initiative was started by My Buona Vista resident Ms Wong Kae Chee. She wanted to encourage the habit of reading and foster neighbourliness.
The HV Little Library opened recently with the support of Our Tanjong Pagar Town Council and My Buona Vista Zone B RC. Well-wishers donated shelves and books. Ms Wong and volunteers will also be maintaining the library and curating the reading materials.
Greatly heartened by this community effort. A nice, warm little place to cuddle up with a book!

Keechiu Meets The Parents.

Always enjoy meeting parents of our students — having a shared understanding of our vision for education enables all of us to better support our students.
Spent an afternoon with Parent Support Group (PSG) leaders over the weekend.
We exchanged ideas on how our students can be confident learners and what we can do to contribute to the well-being of our students, parents and teachers.
The PSG leaders also submitted pledges on how they can do their part to support our children’s education and growth, and build our social compact.
Appreciate the partnership and support of our PSGs who have readily stepped forward to strengthen our school community.

Keechiu talks to students from Seng Kang Primary School.

Great things start with great ideas, and Seng Kang Primary is rich with them. But students here also know the hard work it takes to turn their ideas into reality.
Step into their newly-opened Makerspace and you'll see their award-winning projects for yourself: an AI programme that detects if you're wearing a mask, robots that can trace and move along a line on the ground, and even a vending machine prototype that dispenses masks. All of these took multiple iterations, trials and errors, before finally getting it right.
During my conversation with the students, many of them also had ideas for how homework can be made more enjoyably challenging. They wanted fewer questions, but harder ones! This surprised me. “Our P6 seniors tell us to do the difficult questions more than the easy ones," one student said. When asked why, the student explained: "You learn more when you solve difficult problems."
When trying to put our ideas into action, there are bound to be failures, hiccups, and setbacks to deal with. Glad to see our students taking these head on, and in their stride.

Social service agencies are an important part of our social fabric – they embody the spirit of helping one another through tough times when faced with challenges.
Joined Blessed Grace Social Services in celebrating their 8th Anniversary over the weekend. Since 2014, Blessed Grace has served the elderly, the lower-income groups, and foreign domestic workers as well as narcotic and gambling addicts.
During the pandemic, Blessed Grace adapted by pivoting their services online to support recovering addicts. About 400 addicts each week benefitted from the support of Blessed Grace, changing their lives for the better and healing their relationships with their families in the process.
Let us continue to demonstrate this Singaporean togetherness by doing our part to care for one another, and maintaining strong communal links.

#DidYouKnow that professional In-Ear Monitors have up to 8 drivers (or small speakers) in each small earbud to accurately produce sound?
Tried my hand at making one during my recent visit to Ngee Ann Polytechnic and was fascinated by the many intricate details.
As part of Ngee Ann Polytechnic’s industry partnership with Johnson & Johnson, about 500 business students will be trained in data analysis and development of marketing strategies over 3 years.
Proud of the applied training offered by our polytechnics, and looking forward to forging even stronger linkages with our industry partners.

Keechiu thanks librarians.

Glancing at the timetable taped to her cupboard, Ms Eunice Tan checks which class will be coming to the library that day. The librarian neatens bookshelves, decorations, and chairs, preparing to welcome excited students into her world of storybooks.
Students in Edgefield Primary enjoy a Library Period every week, where they spend part of their English or Mother Tongue lesson in the library to read a book of their choice.
“But if they all queue up to borrow books after class ends, it can get quite noisy and crowded!” Ms Tan chuckles, with a tinge of exasperation. Her solution? A library card, personally made, that students would slot in the book they want to loan out. They drop the book into their respective class’ box and are free to leave the library. And later, Ms Tan personally delivers each box of books to their classroom.
“I just want to make reading fun and accessible for all the students,” says Ms Tan. This library, her pride and joy for the past 20 years, runs like clockwork thanks to her diligence and thoughtfulness.
Our school community extends beyond our classrooms. Thank you to our librarians, one of our many school heroes that make learning vibrant and enjoyable for our students

Keechiu congratulates all students who have flown the Singapore flag high in the international arena this year.

Meet Kang Zheng, a 17 year-old student who is fascinated with drawing maps and transport routes.
In fact, his love for maps is so great that he has even drawn up the complex Tokyo subway and suburban rail systems! Kang Zheng’s interest and hard work in Geography paid off as he placed second in the world in the recently concluded 18th International Geography Olympiad. With his hard work and that of his teammates, Brian Lee, Marcus Lee, and Anders Hong, the Singapore Team emerged champions among 54 countries/territories.
Kang Zheng and his teammates were not the only ones who did Singapore proud. Our students brought home a total of 9 Gold medals, 14 Silver medals, 3 Bronze medals and 1 Honourable Mention from the various International Olympiads, and they also came in second in both the International and Online Young Physicists’ Tournaments.
Heartiest congratulations to all our students who have flown the Singapore flag high in the international arena this year, and I encourage everyone to continue to pursue your interests and passion.
I would also like to extend my appreciation to all the teachers and instructors who have worked hard in helping our students achieve their dreams and fulfil their potential!
Well done everyone!

Towards the end of my visit to Rosyth School, I asked the students if they had any questions for me.
A Primary 4 student raised her hand: “How can I help my friends when they are troubled?”
This question is testament to the strong culture of care and empathy among the students. The minute you step into the school compound, you see a Passion Board which lists a range of activities that students can choose to participate in. These include service-learning projects to befriend seniors in the community, food donation drives, and volunteering their time to serve as cyber wellness ambassadors to their peers. While optional, these activities are usually fully subscribed.
The school also houses a MakerSpace where students can ideate and create a prototype to solve real-world problems. They have come up with prototypes ranging from a robotic walking aide to a memory card game for the visually-impaired using Braille.
I am heartened by their sensitivity to community needs, and how they offer their skills and talents to serve others. Keep up the great work!

Happy to share that SMRT and our 5 Polytechnics signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) this afternoon.
The collaboration provides our Poly students with the opportunity to embark on a career with SMRT upon graduation, as well as provide SMRT employees with training and upskilling opportunities at the polytechnics.
This is a significant step in ensuring a steady talent pipeline for SMRT and the larger rail industry in Singapore.
Looking forward to forging more partnerships with industry to provide industry-relevant learning for our students and support #LifelongLearning for our workforce.

Do you know what this is?
I came across a group of workers huddled over the tactiles at a pedestrian crossing along Commonwealth Avenue. I was curious and took a closer look at what they were doing.

Well, I found out that they were conducting a “pendulum skid test”. The test measures the slip-resistance of a floor surface when a foot comes into contact with it.
We can learn something new every day.
