Keechiu visited SMU.

This is the office of the late Dr Wee Kim Wee, who served as the 4th President of Singapore from 1985-1993.
Affectionately known as “The People’s President”, Dr Wee was much-loved by Singaporeans, and part of his legacy lives on in the replication of his home at
Singapore Management University, made possible by the loan of his possessions by his family.
One can catch glimpses of Singapore’s history and heritage in many parts of SMU. This includes the iconic red brick pillars that mark the original entrance to the former National Library building located at Stamford Road – part of the collective memory of generations of Singaporeans.
Was also glad to see the art works of Chua Ek Kay and other local artists displayed at the Li Ka Shing library and throughout the campus. The paintings of Singapore streets and other evocative images, allow our students to experience the everyday life in the early years of Singapore.
Was struck by the strong sense of place during my visit to SMU – indeed, our autonomous universities were built upon the hard work and contributions of many generations. In a world defined by rapid changes and globalisation, it is perhaps more critical than ever that our students retain a deep understanding of who we are, and where we come from. And most importantly, as they forge ahead and do well for themselves, to also remember to be of service to our community and Singapore. CCS
