Spoke in Parliament recently about how we are using AI in schools to support learning and teaching. MPs asked questions, and we had a good discussion.
Let me crunch down the essence of what we're doing here in our schools and our IHLs, in 60 seconds.
In an AI-driven world, where information is everywhere, learning how to use AI is key. But the fundamental skills needed to use AI ethically matters even more.
What does it take, behind all the AI tools and programmes we are exposing our students to?
We hope students will learn how to distil and discern information, so that they can go a step further - and be able to access insights. And finally, to be able to look at something and discover new value propositions, which requires unique perspectives.
Only then will we be able to answer tomorrow's questions, with tomorrow's solutions - and unlock new opportunities.

Had a good dialogue with parents and school representatives from Parent Support Groups (PSGs) across all schools, this weekend.
We shared our perspectives on supporting our children in being the best that they can be. We want our children to know that we love them for who they are, and that they are special and can contribute to society in their own way.
Grateful for the strong partnership with PSGs and look forward to working together closely.

Who here had a 555 notebook?
Joined Tampines Primary School students for morning assembly yesterday and saw them holding onto something familiar.
Before iPhones, I used these small 555 notebooks to record all sorts of things - expenses, contact numbers or to-do lists. It was our “personal secrets” book!
Pleasantly surprised to see our young kids using such a gem today

Any guess what they are using it for?

The Lunar New Year celebrations continue!
Joined Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan’s festivities this afternoon. With a long and rich history since 1929, the Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan has played a vital role in strengthening bonds in our diverse society, along with our other clan associations. Its partnership with Marketing Institute of Singapore and Singapore University of Social Sciences (@suss.sg) to provide learning and self-improvement opportunities for the Teochew community is also testament to the association’s commitment to education and progress.
As we continue to preserve our cultural heritage, we must also build on our foundations and innovate to develop our own unique identity as a Singaporean tribe. I hope that as one people, we will be the bridge to unite people and countries of differing backgrounds.
Wishing Teochew Poit Ip Huay Kuan continued success in the years ahead, and everyone a joyous Lunar New Year with abundant blessings!

Going to bed with a roof over our heads and hearts at ease. Waking in the morning and thinking about what to have for breakfast. This is routine for some – but even a simple blessing like this isn’t guaranteed for people in some parts of the world now.
Today, at the 57th War Memorial Service organised by the 新加坡中华总商会 SCCCI, we stood in remembrance of our forebears and pioneers, who gave their lives to defend Singapore. They were united in the face of conflict.
As we mark 40 years of Total Defence, we are reminded of the importance of being one people, in an era of diverging geopolitical conditions.
Peace will always be tenuous. Every Singaporean, from all walks of life, must play a part to safeguard what we value - from the teacher, to the student, the soldier, the healthcare worker, the executive and the business owner.
The most powerful defence is not bought - but built. This is how an improbable nation like Singapore can continue to flourish.

Keechiu asks if we are ready. :o-o::confused::biggrin:

Chan Chun Sing

1 d ·
Disruptions aren't just possible - they're inevitable. Are we ready?
This year, our schools commemorate Total Defence Day with simulated disruptions of power, water or food supply.
Today, Amy Khor and I joined students at Cedar Girls' Secondary School in their Food Resilience Experience, where we discussed the importance of food security and tried Ready-To-Eat meals developed by the Singapore Food Agency (SFA). Cedarians also had many thoughtful questions about geopolitics, and interdependence versus self-sufficiency in economic relations.
The strength in our defence lies in our mental fortitude. Where we are resourceful, adaptable - and most importantly, able to carry on no matter the challenge.

In the #SGBudget2024 speech today, DPM Lawrence Wong announced several concrete steps we will take to support Singaporeans' pursuit of upskilling and lifelong learning, so that we can achieve our fullest potential.
The ITE Progression Award (IPA) will help Institute of Technical Education, Singapore graduates offset diploma costs and build savings for longer-term goals. We will also introduce the SkillsFuture Level-Up Programme (SFLP), which will help our mid-career Singaporeans aged 40 and above to pursue a significant skills reboot.
Ministry of Education will also enhance the Edusave Awards and provide more support to families of children with special needs.
Being able to progress together will always be a key part of our social compact.
2M Dr Maliki Osman, MOS Gan Siow Huang 颜晓芳 and I will share the details at MOE's COS.

"Now what?" I hear this often among graduating students. We've all been there. Times when we grappled with decisions and were trying to map out what's next.
Ashruff was drawn to the notion of businesses giving back to the community, while he was pursuing his Diploma in International Business. He thought that he might like to enter the corporate sustainability sector, but wasn't 100% sure. So with the advice of good friends and National University of Singapore's career advisors, he pursued several sustainability-focused internships in his time at NUS to "double confirm" his interests.
Ashruff eventually graduated with a Bachelor of Social Sciences in Economics and is now a Sustainability Specialist at WS Audiology, a hearing aid manufacturer. He oversees their operations carbon accounting and value chains.
Fiona too was uncertain about her career aspirations at first. She wasn’t so keen on lab-based work, but knew she did well working with people. So she took on a double major in Biomedical Sciences and Biobusiness from Nanyang Technological University, Singapore, and eventually found her passion for consulting during a medical affairs internship. Fiona is now an Analyst at IQVIA, and works daily with the consulting team to provide strategic solutions to her clients.
Our fresh graduates have done well in the face of moderated economic growth in 2023. 89.6% of our graduates were employed within six months of completing their final examinations and drew competitive salaries, according to the 2023 Joint Autonomous University Graduate Employment Survey.
Ashruff and Fiona are just some examples of people who took some time to figure out their interests, discovered their calling and took diverse paths.
Each of you will have your own stories to tell too, I'm sure.
Well done, Class of 2023!

Some parents have expressed concerns about why and how the situation in Gaza is covered in students’ CCE lessons. Some have also asked why we are exposing young students to current affairs that are complex and controversial. I explained why in a media interview today.
The conflict in Gaza is geographically far away. But much of it is accessible online - many sources, many narratives, many viewpoints. It is not possible to shield our children from what is happening elsewhere. They are online, they’re on social media.
So, rather than shying away from difficult conversations, we have to guide and equip our children with the skills to navigate their complexities. It's the right and responsible thing to do.
We are not here to delve into the historical context of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, or impart views on which side is right or wrong. But what we hope to do is build a culture where students will consider how they might respond responsibly. To understand their own emotions, reflect how we can safeguard our cohesion and harmony, verify information sources before sharing them responsibility. To appreciate the diversity of views and learn how to conduct conversations sensitively and respectfully. To have empathy for all who are suffering – regardless of race or creed.
The topic of Israel and Gaza is, and will always be, difficult to talk about. We will continue to walk with our educators closely, in facilitating these discussions. Our CCE lesson materials will also be reviewed, as part of efforts to regularly update them, so that they keep pace with developments and take into account feedback from stakeholders.
I am grateful to all our educators, who are doing their best to facilitate these discussions with care and professionalism. They too have personal feelings and convictions, but they do not impose them on their students. I trust them fully. I ask that all of us also give them our trust too so that they can teach our children with assurance and peace of mind.
If there’s one thing I hope that all students will take away from these lessons: we are first and foremost Singaporeans and we must never allow these issues to divide us.
