If you watched the documentary, some Muslims were killed as well. The killings were mostly indiscriminate, but their priority was foreigners especially US and UK citizens. One survivor said that he told the terrorist that they were Muslim just before they started firing. If he had not spoke out, he would has been killed as well. The terrorist were not interested to find out where you were from before they shoot. Unless you claim that you are a Muslim before they shoot.


So unless Hwei Yen claim she is a Muslim, maybe she got chance. Else, I think she is as good as dead when captured.

it's called common sense! by the same token, if you cannot provide proof that gay loong didn't help to expedite or help to close her case then shut up!

all you are doing is the same as anyone of us. using our knowledge to decipher what happened. The fact that she and other hsotages were not immediately and only she was killed and soon after gay loong opened his mouth.

it wasn't only his mouth but the things he said that were thoughtless given the situation. Given the situation and the things gay loong said, it couldn't have helped the hostage at all. Seeing the what he said would definitely be taken in a bad light by the terrorists it is surely logical to think that what he said irked them to the extend that she was chosen for execution.

Note that she was only a hostage like a few other hostages, a few who made it out alive.

It boils down to one question - do you think gay loongs words helped the situation? There are three probable answers -
1) it helped alleviate the situation for the hostage
2) it put the hostage in greater danger
3) it had no effect on the outcome

If you choose (3) then it is hard for you others to concur especially so when other hostages were not killed. If you choose (1) then you are a complete idiot and you should check yourself into IMH even though I know for a fact that there is no cure idiocy, at least we don't have to account for your idiocy here and your family may even thank us!

LHL boasts a double first from Cambridge. I suspect he was going for a triple first by writing a new handbook on hostage negotiation. Only one sentence exists in his book - condemn the terrorists at your first opportunity to wake them up and they will free your citizens.

A M'sian leader once described MM as 'too clever by half' some 45 years ago. 45 years later, I say the same for the son.

There are many books and articles written on hostage negotiation and none teaches you to be hostile towards the terrorists while they have the upper hand. Sadly, LHL was either ignorant or wrongly advised. Silence is not golden all the time but in this case, silent means enhancing the chances of survival for your national.

Ever wondered why nobody in Parliament brought this up for discussion? I honestly opine LHL screwed up big time here.

If another chap of lesser influence, had uttered those words and the casualty was a MIW or his/her family members, that chap who spoke out would have been shot rightaway.

The game plan has always been to buy time so that counter-terrorist teams or SWAT teams are in place to storm the scene and to rescue as many hostages as possible.

She was not single out. She was killed indiscriminately in a group together with others. Watch the documentary at 41mins.

How did you come out with this.

1) The terrorists were not tuned in to the media
2) They were on a mission to do as much mayhem, killing and destruction.
3) Singapore does not register in the maps and minds of most people around the world.
4) The World media would not have carried it his message because there were more interesting things to report.
5) When the world sees his name being mentioned, they might have associated him with some nutcase from Taiwanese parliament.
6) There was no negotiation, hostage taking etc

The PAP is an oppressive regime and LHL has never been an impressive person. You are giving credit to an idiot who can't even convince his father not to intervene.

Most people blamed terror when the gunmen shot Hwei Yen. But not many people know that someone's stupidity agitated the gunmen and caused them to shoot at Singaporean. The PM wanted to sound "heroic" and denounced the gunmen when Hwei Yen, a Singaporean, was in their hands and was very vulnerable.

I blame his stupidity and unnecessary comment for causing Hwei Yen's death. A stupid PM has blood on his hands.
