French is an English surname just happened to be spelt the same as French as for people from France. The history of Singapore has nothing to do with France and yet we have French Road just next to King George's Avenue. It's named after a British with the surname French, not after the people of France.

Many of you Chinese have the surname Tan. Does that mean that all the Tan clan go suntanning? It's just a coincidence of spelling.

shaddup lah ramseth you fake ang moh.

French Cap ?

img_6770-version-2.jpg

How about French Cap ? Everybody should wear one and show off at the MRT train ? Okay, maybe this is a little too much when Underwear Day is still considered as morally 'acceptable'.

The French were tribal people or barbarians as described by the Romans in ancient time. Why did they named themselves French ? If I'm not wrong, it had to do with the design of their handheld battle axes that they use. The first config was one for throwing and the other for wielding. The other config was the ax for throwing and sword for wielding. You see, the ax had got an extension that looked like a beard for more deadly cutting edge.

Beard = French

So, French was referring to these specific people who fought with this bearded weapons.

Yah, I miss my mom's French Toast already. She used to make good french toast when we were young. Must ask her make this again when she's free.

Re: French Cap ?

During Roman Empire times, French were known as Gauls. During British Empire times, French were known as Frogs.

There're no lions in China and yet Chinese have lion dance. There're no lions in Singapore and yet Singapore is named lion city.
There are no dragons in this world, and yet dragons are believed to exist from China all the way to Europe.

aiyoh... back in 2005, Mr Brown already pointed out that any bastardization of the lion dance would go no where.
read from point 15 to point 20.

excerpt:

15. That Singapore has a new dancing Lion icon that is supposed to be a mix between Chinese, Malay and Indian culture. And yes, it was designed by committee. A new Singapore icon roars to life
FRIENDLY FELINE: PM Lee pats the hybrid dancing lion, which blends elements of Chinese, Malay and Indian culture to symbolise Singapore, while Dr Khor and Mr Ang look on.

YOU'VE photographed the spurting Merlion, cheered the football-dribbling Lions, and gaped at the sleeping cats in the zoo. Now, meet a new leonine species: the dancing Singapore Lion. The new national icon was born last night in Jurong East Stadium. With 10,000 spectators looking on under a full moon, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong dotted the eyes of a lion head designed to symbolise the mythical creature discovered by Sang Nila Utama." ST- 24 Jan 2005

16. That the new Singapore Lion has elements of Chinese, Malay and Indian culture. Er, what happened to the "Others" race? Sorry, we cannot feature the "Others" race, because according to our research, they have no culture we can blend into the Rojak* Lion. They only know how to play guitar in the void deck, and we could not create a dance for that.

*Rojak, for our international readers, is a lovely Asian salad.

17. That the new Singapore Lion is a symbol for racial harmony, and is not a symbol for the racially confused.

18. That every time you mix cultures into a symbol and try to be something for everyone, you end up with a mutant symbol that no self-respecting race or country wants to own.

19. That our new Singapore Rojak Lion has a streamlined pointed snout, bared fangs, and five stars and a crescent on its forehead. That's just cruel, man. Now the other iconic Lions from the Czech Republic, Denmark, England, Montenegro, Netherlands and Sweden are just going to laugh at it. "Ooh, look at Singa! What's with the five stars and crescent on your forehead, dude? Bwahahahahahaha!"

20. That just when you thought the puking Merlion looks silly, along comes the new Singapore Lion.As chiefidler from idledays.net put it, it looks like something out of Transformer's Beast Wars. i think the chiefidler was being kind.

Dragon Is Just A Totem

Blame the Chinese for inventing the myth.

The west also got mah. Hairy Potty also must combat fake creatures too.

Dong Yi or the eastern tribal people had two totems : dragon and phoenix. This is NOT the totem of the Yellow Emperor and the Fiery Emperor tribes. Don't fall off your chair. Some of you are Chinese, so you must know this : the primary totem was NOT the dragon BUT the phoenix. Why ?

It's way easier to go shufflin' shufflin' instead of performing with chairs, ladders and elevated platforms.

Real lion dance is hard work.

I heard one story. Long long ago jungle got fire and men smell the good smell of cooked animals. But birds can fly and fly out of fire. Thats why call phoenix out of ashes. So wait till fire over birds come down, men catch some birds and feed them fat fat until they cannot fly. Become chicken and duck. Then cook and eat lah LOL
