that's the response i got when i told my old folks decades ago that i want to 'kick ball' as me not interested in studying at that time.

wonder if sg parents mentality remain the same? if your kid tell u the same thing? what will your reaponse be?

i from the generation that cannot make any own decision as a kid. i believe most of the bros here are already parent. will u allow your kid to take up full time sports or non-academic related stuff.

Teach them to sell...it will be useful in future.

End of the day, u must be happy with what you are doing.
Just look at some of the folks in other countries, they produced genuine smile rather than smile wanly.

Back then parents themselves din have much education.
Their objective for kids to go to school to get good academic grades and keep out of trouble.
Anything out of the norm is not encouraged.
Non academic extra curricular activities were seen as frivilious distractions.
Now we want our kids to have a well rounded education and there are more also non conventional options available accepted as careers choices now than yesteryears.
Different era different expectations

current parents pay $50 per 1.5hr session to the arsenal school of excellence for their 5yo boy to have a kick about...

if you want to "kick ball" to earn a living in Sillypore, you can forget about it.
1) Sillypore gahbrament will rather "buy foreign talent" as sportsman to earn medals for their glory.
2) There's not many sponsor in Sillypore who is keen to groom local "kick ballers".

All Sinkie parents want their kids to study hard... preferably get a distinctive scholarship, enter civil/military service, and ultimately become a PAP MP or minister. Lui Tuck Yew is a role model.

If you think about it, it's just another selfish form of 'delayed gratification' lottery. Those parents want to strike it rich at the expense of their kid's childhood, sanity and happiness. People who bet on 4D or Toto pin their hopes on the announcement of the winning numbers a few days later. People who bet on their kids have to wait a couple of decades later to find out if they had won.

Same ideology, different duration.

i totally agree with what you say.

I am very good at spotting other people's selfish agenda and i usually point middle finger at them and tell them to dream on. Parents at times behaves like this too and my middle finger will fly towards them without 2nd thoughts.

i would be proud to have wise and generous parent but any sinkie behaviour from them will get bashing from me.

Parents have no right to impose their thinking and ideas on their children ( unless the child did something immoral or actions which harm others). If they dun like it, then too bad. Blame themselves, i got their genes. I will never allow my parents to take advantage of me and they know it. that is why i live like a happy fuck.

Nobody is born to owe another person a living. People exist here to provide a service or to serve in their way for the benefit of the society selflessly.. If any human beings ( including parents) do not understand this, i just tell them to go fuck themselves.

if i remember correctly, there is a special school for those who are good in certain sports? they do study some academic subjects right? sadly, there are many local sports talents but are left out. remember james wong? think he was still winning medals before he retired.

I don't think it has anything to do with different eras.

It is not natural for a kid to want to attend school or study. They rather spend time playing. But parents because of their experience and in some cases are aware of their own lost opportunities want the best for their kids.

What ever you do in life from farming to running a large company an academic education will always make you much better at what you do. It is not like ballet dancing or playing sport where these are peripheral.

The smarter and more capable ones who did not advance due to the lack of interest when they were young, bad influence or no means to fund further education do realise their they could have gone even further in what fields that they are in now. So when the become parents, they tend to push harder. In a way you realise that your parents are actually intelligent.

Yes the odds are stacked against talented local sinkie kids who wants to grow up to be professional sports champions.
So far in the past decades.....there wan't any govt support or infrastructure....now the govt is providing support but it's to nurture foreign talents like ping pong and tao li.

the underlying concept of the sinkie govt is to use money to BUY talent.. not nurturing..

They do not care about personal development and wisdom.. they only want instant result with instant glory...even if it looks stupid on them.
