They're recruited and trained by the British Army, only pledging allegiance to Nepal and the British Crown. It started with Britain invading Nepal more than 200 years ago to consolidate British India. The Gurkhas fought the much bigger British Army that had much more advanced weapons to a standstill. Truce and negotiation were called and the old Nepalese kingdom finally agreed to be subordinated (different from surrender). The British granted Nepal terms Nepal wanted in exchange of some terms Britain wanted, one of which is command of the Gurkhas whom they failed to defeat outright, something unheard of at the height of the British Empire, especially with a country and army so small and backward.

Outside Nepal, Gurkha postings are decided by the British Army, i.e. Singapore has to hire Gurkhas through the British Army. Not every country with money can hire them. Somehow, LKY got the priviledge from old colonial ties.

By the way, the only time on record that Gurkhas tasted outright defeat and surrender was in Singapore WW2 in the hands of the Japanese. They would have fought down to the last man but the British ordered them to surrender.

The Gurkhas only know one thing and they are damn good at it. They are brave and exceptional in their field. They are hopeless at anything else. I have been to their part of the world in Nepal and in particular Pokhara but despite the remittance which is huge and their association with the UK and Singapore, they have nothing to show for it in their homeland. They are fucking brave but absolutely hopeless in everything else. So lets compare apples with apples.
