Yes, many WP campaign helpers and supporters are very disappointed by this outcome. Am I disappointed? No, because in my view, the result of near 45% is within my estimate prior to elections. I wasn't expecting a win, though a plus minus 3% is within the standard errors. This is based on the statistical feel from knocking doors.
Ever since 1970s, no opposition candidates have won during their first electoral participation. 45% for a GRC is not the best result for the first try historically but not so bad either.
As for James' saga, I believe that it has minimum impact on the ultimate outcome, maybe just a 1% or at most 2% only. It won't change the fact that we would still lose, though with higher votes.

I have asked his classmates from ACS and they can't explain it. I have asked his NS mates prior to he leaving for his studies and they can't explain it. However the term charismatic keeps popping up even till today for those who have engaged him personally or in a group gathering (without his fan base following behind).
My sense is that Vasoogate damaged him psychologically ( I guess I am as qualified as Dr Chua of SPH) and not just the reputation. Time would have glossed over the reputational damage and the ultra conservatives voters would have been replaced by young voters who would have seen thru PAP fluff.
I suspect its not Chee that you are afraid of - its the merry band that follow him. If I had my way, would have convinced both the Chees to move to another Party and just be candidates. Leave the supporters behind. He would eventually float to the top.
