Bookmakers agree to pay €100,000 fine for Denmark striker Bendtner

The Arsenal man was handed a one-match suspension after he lifted his shirt to reveal the 'lucky' underwear sponsored by the betting firm in his country's match against Portugal

Bookmakers, Paddy Power have agreed to pay the €100,000 fine handed to Niklas Bendtner by Uefa following the Denmark striker's celebrations against Portugal earlier in the Euro 2012 tournament.

Bendtner revealed the 'Paddy Power' logo across his green underpants as he lifted his shirt to celebrate scoring his country's equaliser in the Group B match.

Along with the fine, a one-match ban was given to the 24-year-old, which will rule him out of Denmark's opening 2014 World Cup qualifier unless he is successful in his appeal.

In retaliation to the Uefa punishment, the betting company issued a statement revealing that they will pay the fine for the Arsenal man, labelling the European governing body as "hysterical and deeply cynical."

A recent statement posted on Twitter by the company read: "Inspired by your Twitter feedback, we have agreed to pay the barmy €100k fine that #Uefa dished out [to] Nicklas Bendtner."

Amongst a number of tweets seemingly mocking Uefa, the company continued to express their feelings towards the organisation: "Nicklas Bendtner shouldn't suffer because of #Uefa'sdouble standards, & penalised for wearing his lucky pants, which was just a bit of fun."

Paddy Power later launched the hashtag 'POWERPANTS' and revealed that they would send out 3,000 pairs of the incriminating underwear to their social media followers.

"#POWERPANTS: today we are posting 3,000 pairs of Lucky Pants to those who asked for them on our Facebook page. Wear them in solidarity with Nicklas."

Goal-line technology is a 'necessity', demands Blatter after Ukraine's cruel blow against England

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 09:26 GMT, 20 June 2012 | UPDATED: 11:36 GMT, 20 June 2012

Football's most powerful man Sepp Blatter has demanded goal-line technology is introduced after Ukraine's heartache against England.

The co-hosts were denied an equaliser in Tuesday's crunch Group D decider that ultimately saw them crash out of Euro 2012.

John Terry hooked clear a shot from Marko Devic in the 62nd minute but replays showed the ball was clearly over the line.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter: 'After last night’s match #GLT is no longer an alternative but a necessity.'

Goalline technology: A computer-generated image shows the ball over the line

Blatter hopes to convince the game's rule-makers - the International Football Association Board - to give technology the green light.Blatter became a convert to goal-line technology after Frank Lampard was denied a legitimate goal in England's 2010 World Cup defeat to Germany. That failed to convince UEFA president Michel Platini - the favourite to succeed Blatter as the most powerful man in world football - who remained wedded to his belief additional assistant referees behind each goal was the best way forward. That left Platini red-faced after he made bold claims on the eve of the game about the effectiveness of five officials.

He said: 'With five, officials see everything. They don't take decisions without being fully aware. There's also a uniformity of refereeing. For example, they don't call unintentional handballs. That uniformity has led to more flowing football.'

Platini also attempted to justify his opposition to goal-line technology.

'Goal-line technology isn't a problem,' he said. The problem is the arrival of technology because, after, you'll need technology for deciding handballs and then for offside decisions and so on. It'll be like that forever and ever. It'll never stop. That's the problem I have.'However, the introduction of some form of goal-line technology is now virtually inevitable.

IFAB are expected to approve at least one of two systems that have been subject to in-depth testing when they meet in Kiev the day after the July 1 Euro 2012 final.Hawk-Eye, the camera-based system made famous after being successfully introduced to tennis, and GoalRef, which relies on a chip in the ball, were both selected for further tests at IFAB's meeting in March. One of them could be introduced for the first time at December's FIFA Club World Cup in Japan.

England's friendly win against Belgium at Wembley this month witnessed a Hawk-Eye test, although the results were not made public.

Ukraine boss Oleg Blokhin was fuming over the incident and took his rage into the press conference where he offered a Ukrainian reporter to step outside for a ‘man conversation’.

Pressure: England rode their luck at times but took all three points

‘The ball crossed the line by over a metre,’ said the Ukraine manager. ‘There are five refs on the pitch and the ball was over the line. Why do we need five refs then?’

Devic said: ‘If I’m honest, I didn’t see it at the time. But it was a big game, and it’s very sad. I think everyone in the stadium would like to have seen what would’ve happened if it had been 1-1 with not long to go.’England boss Roy Hodgson said: ‘The important thing was John Terry did so well to hook the ball off the line. People can’t be 100 per cent certain. We’ve suffered bad luck in those areas before.’

Captain Steven Gerrard added: ‘To be successful in these tournaments, with the quality of teams you have, you need a bit of luck along the way. Two years ago with Frank Lampard’s goal it didn’t go our way. If you keep fighting and stick at it you earn that bit of luck.’There was fortune too in England’s goal. Gerrard crossed low from the right and defender Yevhen Khacheridi, stretching to intercept, only succeeded in diverting it past his own goalkeeper to Rooney, who applied the finish from a yard.

It was his first goal in a major tournament for eight years and, after scoring, he celebrated by pretending to spray his hair, which is growing after a transplant.‘I’d used Andy Carroll’s hair products and before the game he asked me to do it if I scored and so I did it,’ said Rooney. ‘Hopefully I’ll end up with hair like him.’

Comeback: Rooney made a welcome return to football following his ban

In the TV studio, Jamie Carragher said: ‘A boy from Croxteth should not use hair product!’

Italy await in Kiev on Sunday and Rooney believes the change of luck could help England beyond the quarter-finals for the first time since 1996. He said: ‘It’s a difficult game and will be quite evenly matched but we’re feeling confident. We’re difficult to beat and we’ve got players in the team who can score goals. It’s going to be a tight game but hopefully we can come out winners.

‘It’s always a great feeling to score. My overall game could’ve been a bit better but it was difficult because it was my first game for a while. Towards the end I felt a little bit tired. That’s natural and I’ll benefit from that time on the pitch.’

Gerrard was superb and Rooney added: ‘He’s a world-class player and I thought he was brilliant. He drove us on at times. His delivery has been exceptional. We’re lucky to have a player like that in the team.’

Collina: Ukraine were denied a fair goal against England

The former match official believes that referee Viktor Kassai was at fault for not allowing Marko Devic's effort to count in the co-hosts' final group game with the Three Lions

Uefa chief refereeing officer Pierluigi Collina has admitted that Ukraine were wrongly denied a goal in their 1-0 defeat against England.

John Terry attempted to clear the ball from the under the bar following a shot from Marko Devic, but television replays showed that the effort had crossed the goal line.

Collina blamed human error for the wrong call, but insisted that the other two similar situations - in the group matches between Germany and Portugal and Italy and Croatia - were handled correctly.

"The ball crossed the line," the Italian said. "This was the third situation of this kind in the tournament. Unfortunately, this one was wrong."

The incident has reignited the debate over whether the introduction of five officials actually helps to prevent bad calls from being made.

"This is the only problem we have had," Collina noted.

"It is one negative decision in three years of Champions League and two years of Europa League and 24 matches at the Euros.
"I would be very happy to know if the same questions would have been asked without yesterday's decision."

After the match, Fifa president Sepp Blatter wrote on Twitter that the introduction of goal-line technology "is no longer an alternative but a necessity".

Van der Vaart escapes to St Tropez with wife Sylvie after Euro 2012 disaster

The Tottenham star endured a torrid time in Ukraine and Poland but immediately looked chirpy just days later as he enjoyed some fun in the sun with his television presenter spouse

Jun 21, 2012 8:05:00 AM

193210hp2.jpg

The Netherlands may have made a real hash of their Euro 2012 campaign but Rafael van der Vaart was determined not to let that deter him from enjoying a beach break with his wife, Sylvie.

The midfielder only started one game in Ukraine and Poland but made a splash when given the chance, curling a sumptuous strike into the top corner against Portugal.

His effort was all in vain, however, as the Dutch failed to pick up any points and were forced to walk the plank of Euro elimination.

Sylvie, a television presenter, recently impressed many with her twinkle-toed efforts on the German equivalent of Strictly Come Dancing and flaunted her toned physique on the beaches of St Tropez.

Eventually the pair reached dry land, however, and even posed for an adoring snap at the dinner table.

Lampard trots to Royal Ascot with Christine Bleakley to ease Euro 2012 woes

After turning 34 on Wednesday, the midfielder put his England misery to one side for an afternoon of fun and frolicking at the races with his fabulous fiancee

193209hp2.jpg

Frank Lampard was unable to represent England at Euro 2012 this summer due to a thigh injury but he looked back to full fitness while cantering around Royal Ascot this week.

The experienced midfielder may have seen his chances to play at another international tournament fall at the final fence but he can at least console himself with his fine filly, television presenter Christine Bleakley.

193222hp2.jpg

While the Chelsea man may be put out the stud on the international scene, he is likely to remain an integral part of the Blues set-up under Roberto Di Matteo next season.

Bleakley looked radiant as she sipped on expensive cocktails but at one point appeared to be less than impressed... although reports could not be confirmed that Frank's horsing around had anything to do with it.

193220hp2.jpg

The couple are due to tie the knot later this year and more afternoons like this could see their relationship move into the final furlongs of true love.

Lampard however is a real thoroughbred and has done well to steeplechase the lovely Christine's heart.

Roy Hodgson has called on his England players to cast off the burden of past failures and show the mental toughness to win at penalties. The England manager has promised his team will be fully prepared should Sunday’s European Championship quarter-final against Italy in Kiev go down to spot-kicks.‘We have practised already but we’ll take it even more seriously now,’ he said. ‘But it’s really your composure, your confidence, your ability to really block everything out and forget the occasion that means you score or you don’t score.

On the spot: England captain Steven Gerrard has been told he will be the chief penalty taker

‘When you are working with the England team the past is always going to weigh heavily because everything we do today is being compared with something that happened in the past.’ Hodgson has to choose his first five penalty takers but he will turn to skipper Steven Gerrard to lead by example. Hodgson told him he would take the penalties before the opening group game against France.

Gerrard has scored 27 of 34 attempts in his career, although he did miss one in the quarter-final shootout against Portugal at the 2006 World Cup.

Kassai and his assistants failed to spot a shot from Marko Devic had crossed the line before John Terry hooked it clear during England’s 1-0 win on Tuesday. By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 08:26 GMT, 20 June 2012 | UPDATED: 14:00 GMT, 20 June 2012

England are going to be beaten by Italy in the European Championship quarter-final on Sunday... according to the Capello Index at least.

The Three Lions topped Group D on Wednesday night after victory over Ukraine and France's defeat to Sweden set up a mouth watering tie with the Azzurri.

Russian government demands release of locked-up fans

Supporters arrested during clashes in Poland should be tried in their own country, says the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs

Jun 22, 2012 10:58:00 PM

By Alex Kohnert

191840hp2.jpg

The government of Russia has demanded that the Polish authorities release fans that have been detained following clashes at Euro 2012.

Outbreaks of violence between supporters before Russia's Group A match against the co-hosts resulted in the arrest of 24 Russians, two of which were immediately expelled from the country.

Despite both countries being knocked out of the tournament during the group stage, the conflict has continued off the pitch, with Moscow calling for action on the other 22 fans who have now been detained for 10 days.

"From the Russian side, strongly underscored was a necessity of solving all the issues for an early return to the motherland of Russian football fans, who were detained in Poland during notorious incidents at the European football championship," said a statement on Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs website.

The statement explained that Deputy Foreign Minister Vladimir Titov and Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Katarzyna Pelczynska-Nalecz had spoken privately about the issue before the demands were issued publically.

This was responded to in robust fashion by Pelczynska-Nalecz, who outlined that the arrested Russians would be dealt with according to the laws of his country.

"Minister Katarzyna Pelczynska-Nalecz responded that in Poland such cases are dealt with and will be dealt with in line with the currently applicable law," said the statement on the Foreign Ministry's website.

Germany 4 Greece 2: Sparkling Germans a step Klose to the prize

By IAN LADYMAN PUBLISHED: 20:39 GMT, 22 June 2012 | UPDATED: 23:33 GMT, 22 June 2012

Germany manager Joachim Low described Greece as 'survival artists' prior to kick-off, but it is Low's countrymen who know how to survive, and how to prosper, in international competitions.

For the 20th time in 28 tournaments, Germany are in the semi-finals. That's what you call a record, and whether it be England who meet Germany next Thursday in Warsaw, or Italy, it will be the Germans who are favourites.

Displaying the sort of adventure, both in selection and style, that has made even previously hostile neutrals warm to them, Low's side gave a convincing account of themselves last night.

Greece did score twice, which will encourage optimism in Germany's next opponents, but then they could have conceded several more.

If there were German faults, they were wastefulness in front of goal in the first half, and being susceptible to counter attack. Roy Hodgson will have noted that. But it was the overall impression of fluid movement, personified in Mesut Ozil, that will linger.

That and two volleys, from Sami Khedira and Marco Reus, which came from their dreams. Captain Philipp Lahm also scored a 20-yard belter, the only routine goal being Miroslav Klose's close-range header.

Greece goalkeeper Michalis Sifakis was at fault as Klose nodded in his 64th international goal, and he was maybe partly culpable on Lahm's opener, too, but defeat was hardly his responsibility.

Low had forecast wave after wave of German attack crashing on to 'Greek rocks' and that was what transpired. It must not be forgotten that Greece played without their captain and key man Giorgos Karagounis.

'It was a fantastic performance,' said Low. 'For the fourth time in a row we are in the semi-final of a major tournament. We have won 15 games in a row. And we are the youngest team in the tournament with great options for the future.'

All white on the night: Germany celebrate in front of their fans as they book their place in the semi final

Low then praised England as 'much better than in 2010, less divided, much better organised under Roy Hodgson. They would be very difficult to play against. Italy, too.'

With Angela Merkel perched beside Michel Platini in the stands, the economic background to the two countries' relationship was in the air.

In terms of the match, Karagounis's absence mattered more than Merkel's presence, though the political history in Poland could be seen in the thousands of Poles inside the amber stadium cheering Georgios Samaras's 55th-minute equalizer.

That turned out to be Greece's golden moment, the 'Euro-debt derby' was on. Parity lasted six minutes. But the Greeks once again showed their spirit. In the opening five minutes it seemed as if they would be taken apart.

Low had made changes, dropping Lukas Podolski, Thomas Muller and Mario Gomez. In came Klose at centre forward and behind him were Ozil, 23, Reus, 22 and Andre Schurrle, 21.

Blue is the colour: Greece came out fighting in the second half, celebrating Samaras' 55th-minute strike

They are playmakers who should force automaton cliches to wilt and they imposed a pass-andweave pattern that did not alter.Ozil, Reus twice, Klose and Khedira all could have scored before Lahm did. But in the 39th minute Greek resistance was broken.

Bursting past two blue shirts and with the ball sitting up to be hit, Lahm, the left back, used his right foot to drill a swerving 20-yard shot away from Sifakis' despairing hand.

Schurrle nearly made it 2-0 in first-half injury-time but the expectation of a procession was rudely interrupted by Dimitris Salpingidis and Samaras.

The former broke and slid in a low cross that Samaras met just before Jerome Boateng. The stadium, and Germany, were in shock. It did not last. A devastating 13-minute spell was unleashed during which Ozil swooped and swooned.

Greek tragedy: Greece are heading home after their defeat to the Germans

But it was his Real Madrid partner Khedira, 25, who stole the stardust. Having been beaten by Samaras at one end, Boateng made amends at the other, his deep cross causing anxiety in the Greek area.

It was justified spectacularly by Khedira who met the ball on the run and delivered an astonishing volley to beat Sifakis.

Six more minutes and Sifakis was beaten again, his flap at a cross enabling Klose to nod in and the little remaining tension in the contest was removed when Reus pounced on a bouncing ball in the 74th minute and smacked it meatily high into the Greek net.

Ten qualifiers won followed by four in four out here. And Germany in another semi-final.
