Spain 4 Ireland 0 : Torres and La Furia Roja run amok to send Trap's men packing

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 20:35 GMT, 14 June 2012 | UPDATED: 20:51 GMT, 14 June 2012

Fernando Torres dumped the Republic of Ireland out of Euro 2012 as defending champions Spain eased into top gear. The 28-year-old striker, left out of the starting line-up for the Group C opener against Italy, returned with a vengeance to spearhead an impressive display by the Spaniards.

Torres fired them ahead after just four minutes and then, after David Silva had mesmerised the Irish defence to make it 2-0 four minutes after the restart, helped himself to a second to complete a good night's work.
It proved a chastening experience for the Republic, who conceded a fourth late on when substitute Cesc Fabregas collected his second goal of the tournament, as their worst fears were realised.

Spain will head into Monday night's showdown with Croatia with top spot in the group at stake, while Giovanni Trapattoni's men will have only pride to play for when they face Italy, who need to win to progress, in Poznan. Ireland had gone four games unbeaten before they arrived in Poland, but have tasted comprehensive defeat in both the fixtures they have played in their first trip to major finals in a decade.

The sound of Europe's The Final Countdown thundering from the stadium's PA system 15 minutes before kick-off seemed prophetic at the time, and as Portuguese referee Pedro Proenca brought an end to the opening 45 minutes, the Republic's hopes of extending their stay in Poland and Ukraine were hanging by a thread.
They ran out knowing they needed to avoid defeat to have any chance of reaching the last eight, and that an unlikely win would give them a real chance with Italy and Croatia having drawn earlier.

However, just as they had done against the Croatians in Poznan on Sunday evening, Trapattoni's men found themselves behind barely before they had broken sweat, and the source of the damage was entirely predictable.

Taking the plaudits: Fernando Torres opened his account at Euro 2012 after four minutes

Spain boss Vicente Del Bosque had outraged his critics by lining up against the Italians without a recognised striker.Trapattoni had predicted he would not do the same tonight and would restore Torres to the starting line-up, and the Chelsea frontman needed just four minutes to make his mark.

Silva's fleet-footed burst into the penalty area prompted Richard Dunne to make a desperate and successful sliding challenge, but the ball dropped nicely for Torres to round full-back Stephen Ward and smash a right-foot shot from a tight angle high past goalkeeper Shay Given and into the roof of the net.
It was the last thing Ireland needed, although it came after Simon Cox, preferred to Kevin Doyle in a 4-5-1 formation, had tested Iker Casillas with a second-minute drive from distance.

They think it's all over: There was no way back for Ireland after David Silva made it 2-0

But Irish forays into enemy territory were to prove a rare occurrence as Spain, not unsurprisingly, dominated the middle of the field to lay siege to Given's goal. The Aston Villa keeper was peppered from distance as Sergio Busquets, Xabi Alonso and Xavi laid the foundation for Silva, Andres Iniesta and Torres to go about their business.

Given, who had already got down well to claim an effort from Silva, had to beat away a piledriver from Iniesta and in a flurry as the half-time whistle approached, blocked full-back Alvaro Arbeloa's skidding attempt with his legs and tipped another stinging strike from Iniesta over his bar.
By contrast, Robbie Keane, who had worked tirelessly in an attempt to give his side an out-ball, was starved of meaningful possession and found himself chasing a series of lost causes.

article-2159492-139D1630000005DC-594_634x366.jpg

Clinical: Fernando Torres had a field day against the Irish

Whether Trapattoni felt his decision to use Cox had worked or not, he abandoned the experiment at the break to send on the more physical Jon Walters. But the game was effectively over within four costly minutes as Spain once again flexed their muscles at the start of the second half. Given had already repelled another effort from Arbeloa - he and fellow full-back Jordi Alba were effectively playing as wingers - when the keeper's attempt to keep out Iniesta's powerfully-struck shot dropped to the feet of Silva. The Manchester City midfielder still had plenty to do, but he tip-toed his way through the wreckage of the Irish defence before slotting the ball calmly into the bottom corner.

article-2159492-139D1063000005DC-550_634x443.jpg

4-0: Cesc Fabregas completes the scoring

Given produced a stunning one-handed save to deny Xavi with 55 minutes gone, but would have been picking the ball out of his net once again seven minutes later had Busquets managed to bend his shot only marginally more. But further damage was inflicted with 20 minutes remaining when Torres once again ran clear of a static defence to fire expertly past Given and finally kill off hopes of a fightback.Torres departed to rapturous applause from his compatriots with 18 minutes remaining as Fabregas took his place with Spain already looking towards Monday night. There was an equally warm welcome for James McClean when he was handed a second cap and a first competitive appearance as 76th-minute substitute, but Ireland's woes increased seven minutes from time when Fabregas blasted home a fourth as Trapattoni's men slept at a corner.

Frustrated Bilic blasts referee Webb

15 June 2012

12427400000.jpg

Croatia coach Slaven Bilic has criticised the performance of referee Howard Webb in his side's 1-1 draw against Italy at Euro 2012.A second-half goal from Mario Mandzukic rescued a point for Croatia on Thursday after the Azzurri had taken the lead five minutes before the interval through Andrea Pirlo. The draw leaves Croatia on four points, level with Spain ahead of Monday's clash between the two teams.

Italy have two points in Group C.
"Many coaches do not like to talk about the referees, but I do not agree with that," Bilic said after the game."Perhaps I am not going to be objective, but there was a penalty on Nikica Jelavic, while the foul which preceded Pirlo's free-kick goal did not exist.

"I do not want to stir up controversy, but the referee favoured Italy."

Despite his disappointment, Bilic hailed the efforts of his players to fight back after Pirlo's early goal.

"When you're playing against a big team it's not easy to have the ball," the 43-year-old said.
"We waited for our chances. They were better in the first half but even then we played well and had chances, as we did in the second period." In the first half we were a little overawed because there was a lot of pressure on us. We didn't play our best, we can do a lot better, as we showed in the second half."

"Sometimes we lacked patience and shot from outside the box, we needed to be more aggressive to try to have more of the ball and control in midfield.
"At half-time we changed a few positions, Mandzukic dropped deeper, (Ivan) Rakitic went onto the wing and I pushed up (Luka) Modric."He pressed their defence and tried to play in Rakitic and Mandzukic. We dominated them, we were the better team."

"We made triangles, we were passing the ball, we were compact in that area. We've got top players, (Ivan) Strinic played really well, as did (Darijo) Srna.
"We came close to winning, I have to congratulate both teams, it was a good match and I'm satisfied with the result."My players showed character, they're good quality players."

The Euro 2012 Group D clash between Ukraine and France has been suspended due to a lightning storm in Donetsk.

The game was only four minutes old when referee Bjorn Kuipers withdraw the players from the pitch after the rain lashed down on the park from the moment that the players arrived on the Donbass Arena surface.

Goalcom’s James Goldman said of the scene inside the stadium: “A magnificent stadium this might be but us journos have just spotted one major design flaw.

“As the players came out onto the pitch they were met with an enormous clap of thunder and then the heavens opened.

“The rain has fallen at an incredible rate and there is already surface water on this pitch, and is sweeping into the press box where we have taken cover under plastic sheets.”

If the game cannot be restarted at any point today, then it will be rescheduled for tomorrow.

UEFA investigate banana thrown on to pitch during Italy against Croatia as possible racism

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 14:22 GMT, 15 June 2012 | UPDATED: 18:34 GMT, 15 June 2012

Mario Balotelli was at the centre of another racism row as UEFA investigate claims of abuse by Croatia fans.

European football's governing body are examining allegations of monkey chants and that a banana was hurled onto the pitch during Italy's 1-1 draw with Croatia in Poznan on Thursday.

Incident: A steward holds a banana thrown onto the pitch

The Manchester City forward, who before Euro 2012 said he would 'kill' anyone who racially abused him and walk off the pitch in protest, is already the subject of one probe.

UEFA are investigating reports that the 21-year-old was racially abused during Italy's game against Spain, but the evidence against Croatia has been gathered by an independent body.

A group calling itself 'FARE' (Football Against Racism in Europe) took to Twitter.

They wrote: 'FARE observers report between 300 and 500 supporters of Croatia involved in racially abusing Mario Balotelli at last night's match in Poznan.

Retrieval: The banana is picked up

'UEFA received the observers' reports this afternoon. We are working with them to provide as much information as possible.'

UEFA confirmed receipt of the report which, along with racist chanting, alleges that a photographer witnessed a steward retrieving a banana from the pitch.

Fury: Mario Balotelli said he will 'kill' anyone who throws bananas at him

Italy boss Cesare Prandelli has rejected claims that Balotelli was abused against Spain and maintained he was unaware of further problems, saying: 'No, I haven't seen anything.'

The Italian Football Federation confirmed that a photograph which appeared to show the banana being cleared had been forwarded to them, adding that no-one from their delegation witnessed the incident.A spokesman said: 'There's not any official complaint at the moment.'

Buffon fears Spain and Croatia will secure draw that sends Italy home

By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 20:16 GMT, 15 June 2012 | UPDATED: 20:16 GMT, 15 June 2012

Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon hopes that Spain and Croatia don't settle for a result which will edge Italy out of the group qualifying places.

A 2-2 draw between Spain and Croatia on Monday would see Italy heading home, regardless of their result in the final group game against Ireland.

Buffon said: ‘We’re in difficulty. Spain is the strongest team in the world and I believe in the moral stature of their players. Their attitude tends towards one of seriousness.’

However, Croatia will not play for that 2-2 draw against Spain.

‘I can guarantee you I’m a sportsman, and the team are sportsmen,’ said Croatia coach Slaven Bilic.

‘Even if we have a chance to do it, we wouldn’t even consider it. I can tell the whole of Italy that, no way. You can’t do it that way and expect something good to happen in your life.’

Van Marwijk to make changes for Portugal clash

The Dutch coach acknowledged that his strategy for the first two games did not bear fruit and confirmed that new tactics will be implemented for the match against the Seleccao

Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk has announced that he will make changes to his team for Sunday's crucial match against Portugal.

The 60-year-old has come under intense scrutiny of late after the Oranje's disappointing start to the tournament, with two defeats from two games.

His decision to deploy two holding midfielders in the starting XI has received widespread criticism, and Van Marwijk has admitted that he will have to make some changes for the last group match.

"Normally we have a lot of creativity and we are fast at the front, but against Denmark and Germany it was not there," he told KNVB's official website.

"But this happens in football. We lost two games, so I have to change my squad for match against Portugal."

Euro 2012 Group A preview: Poland v Czech Republic

15 June 2012

12427400150.jpg

Despite two good performances at Euro 2012, co-hosts Poland must win their final group game against the Czech Republic to advance from Group A. Poland have drawn their opening two group matches of the European Championship and know that anything other than victory on Saturday against the Czechs will mean their time at the tournament is over.

Greece fought back for a 1-1 draw in Poland's first match of Euro 2012 and then showed plenty of determination to manage the same score against Russia on Tuesday.
But with the Czechs beating Greece 2-1 on Tuesday, Poland need to win to qualify for the quarter-finals. Russia top Group A with four points, ahead of Czech Republic (three points), Poland (two) and Greece (one).

To achieve victory on Saturday, Poland will need to find a way to score more goals.
Poland's two goals so far have been impressive with Robert Lewandowski powerfully heading home Jakub Blaszczykowski's cross against Greece, while the latter, who is also Poland's captain, struck a stunning goal to equalise against Russia. But coach Franciszek Smuda will stress the importance of taking chances as Poland have had 18 shots, with 13 on target, in their two games so far.

However, Smuda will need to fashion one of his players into a goalscorer because apart from Lewandowski and Blaszczykowski, no other Polish player in their Euro 2012 squad has reached 10 goals in their international career.
Importantly for Poland, they should face a goalkeeper out of form in Saturday's match in Wroclaw. Czech Republic's Petr Cech has let in five goals from 12 shots on target so far at the continental championships and has not been helped by poor defending.

In fact, Czech Republic have conceded almost two goals per game on average in 2012, which will give Poland plenty of confidence ahead of Saturday's match.
Smuda is hopeful defender Damien Perquis, as well as midfielders Dariusz Dudka and Eugen Polanski, will be fit after suffering injuries against Russia. Czech Republic captain Tomas Rosicky may not play in Wroclaw after admitting he can barely stand due to an injured Achilles tendon, while there is also some doubt on Cech who has a shoulder problem.

Euro 2012 Group A preview: Greece v Russia

15 June 2012

12427400160.jpg

Russia can seal progression from the Euro 2012 group stages with a draw against Greece in Warsaw on Saturday. Dick Advocaat's side have been one of the most impressive at the tournament so far, following up a 4-1 opening day thrashing of the Czech Republic with an entertaining 1-1 draw against co-hosts Poland. Midfielder Alan Dzagoev has starred, netting three goals, while the performances of Andrey Arshavin and Roman Shirokov have also come in for praise.

Despite the fact that a point would be enough to earn Russia progression to the quarter-finals, Shirokov insists they will be determined to produce victory in the Group A tussle.
"Of course a draw with Greece will also put us into the knockout stage but we should win and stay in Warsaw (for the quarter-finals)," Shirokov said."Any other result will be unacceptable."

His thoughts were echoed by goalkeeper Vyacheslav Malafeev who says his team should focus on winning and nothing else.
"We also need to forget that a draw will also put us into the knockout stage and score," Malafeev said."Once, twice - as much as we can." Advocaat is likely to replace misfiring forward Alexander Kerzhakov with Roman Pavlyuchenko up front.

Kerzhakov had seven attempts on goal that were off target – the most recorded for any match by a player at the European Championship finals – in the opener against the Czechs, and wasted several opportunities against Poland as well.
Pavlyuchenko, who moved to Lokomotiv Moscow from Tottenham Hotspur in the January transfer window, has scored 21 goals in 49 matches for Russia, including one in his side's opening day victory against the Czechs.

Apart from bringing Pavlyuchenko in, Russia are unlikely to change a side which is now unbeaten in 16 matches.
For Greece, anything less than a win and they will be packing their bags and heading home. A brave 1-1 draw with Poland in the opener – in which they had a goal disallowed for offside and had a penalty saved – was followed by a 2-1 defeat against the Czech Republic.

They were made to pay for a slow start in that fixture, conceding two goals in the first six minutes in Tuesday's match in Wroclaw before Theofanis Gekas gave Greece some hope with a goal in the 53rd minute.
But despite having more possession and shots on target than Czech Republic, Greece could not find an equaliser putting them in a desperate situation against Russia.

Heitinga: Germany's players told Dutch team they will beat Denmark

Netherlands need to beat Portugal by two goals on Sunday and hope that Joachim Low's men can do them a favour by stopping the Scandinavians getting any more Euro 2012 points

191224hp2.jpg

Netherlands defender John Heitinga has revealed that Germany's players have promised to help the Oranje by beating Denmark.

Bert van Marwijk’s men have lost their first two games of Euro 2012 and now need to win against Portugal on Sunday and hope the Scandinavians lose to Joachim Low’s side in order to progress.

The Everton centre-half has let it be known that the German players told their Dutch counterparts they will go out to beat Denmark this weekend.

"We can count on Germany. They promised immediately after the match [against Netherlands] to help,” he told reporters.

Despite admitting that getting through to the last eight would now be a tall order, Heitinga feels that his side have the firepower to reach the quarter-finals.

"With two clear goals to score and a need to win against Portugal it will be difficult.

“But form is a snapshot. Tomorrow everything else is irrelevant and we certainly can do it, especially with the strikers at our disposal,” he concluded.

Russia's Euro 2012 exit 'totally deserved', says fitness coach Verheijen

Russia's fitness coach Raymond Verheijen believes his side deserved to bow out of Euro 2012 after the 1-0 loss to Greece in the final Group A clash on Saturday.

The 40-year-old Verheijen was appointed fitness coach of the Russian side by his countryman Dick Advocaat after working as assistant manager for the Wales national team until February of this year.

Minutes after Russia's defeat against Greece in Warsaw's National Stadium, he tweeted his congratulations the two teams who went through to the quarter-finals.

"Russia out. Totally deserved. In second half 80% possession but no creativity so no scoring chances. Congratulations to Greece & Czech Republic." Verheijen wrote on his Twitteraccount.

Advocaat's side saw most of the ball in the second period after conceding a goal to Greece captain Giorgos Karagounis in first-half injury time.

However, their domination and scoring opportunities were not converted into goals despite Russia tallying up five times as many shots as the Greeks over the course of the match, and the fitness coach bemoaned his side's failure to find the back of the net.

"Football is a simple game. If you score more goals than your opponent you deserve to win, no matter the amount of possession or number of chances," Verheijen wrote.

Russia end Euro 2012 third in Group A with four points.

Revealed: England's security blunder as key tactics passed to rivals by spy

By NICK HARRIS PUBLISHED: 21:27 GMT, 16 June 2012 | UPDATED: 22:23 GMT, 16 June 2012

Giving the game away: Roy Hodgson was apparently spied upon

England will make an urgent security review of their pre-match preparations at Euro 2012 after a simple blunder involving a curtain almost led to curtains for Roy Hodgson's European Championship hopes.

A Swedish journalist revealed that he was able to spy on England's pre-match tactical team talk before England faced Sweden on Friday - and then pass secret details to the Swedish FA before the kick-off in Kiev.

The Swedes had advance knowledge of England's tactics and Hodgson's plan to start the crucial group game with Andy Carroll, a ploy designed to exploit Sweden's weakness against headers. They also knew that England would not begin with 18-year-old winger Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.

The Scandinavian snooper who broke the news to his compatriots was able to do so because someone in the England camp had simply forgotten to draw a blind across a window. Ola Billger, of the Svenska Dagbladet newspaper, was working in his room on the fourth floor of Kiev's Opera Hotel when he realised that his window overlooked a skylight to a third-floor meeting room where England manager Hodsgon was giving his tactical talk.

'I grabbed my binoculars and along with a colleague we were able to watch for about 40 minutes through the skylight,' Billger told The Mail on Sunday. 'We were not able to hear anything but it was clear England were talking about how to run through the Swedish defence and how Sweden would attack through corners.

'It was also clear through videos and the tactics board what the lineup would be, with Carroll starting and Oxlade-Chamberlain not.' Before the tactical session was over, a member of the hotel staff pulled a drape across the skylight to close off access to the 'spies'.

Billger added: 'I don't know if it was because they realised we'd been watching. But we had a great story for our paper and, of course, we called the Swedish FA for a comment and shared what we'd found.' Billger says that the Swedish FA's tactical director, former international Reine Almqvist, was 'very pleased to hear the information, especially about the line-up'.

Head for heights: Carroll powered home to give England the lead

Carroll opened the scoring with a brilliant header but the Swedes then used the tactical insights supplied by Billger to go 2-1 up and threaten England's European Championship progress.Adrian Bevington, managing director of Club England at the FA, said that there was 'no evidence whatsoever' of spying by anyone linked directly to the Sweden team.

He added: 'We're very relaxed about what happened and very pleased with the result we got in the match
'I can't say it's something that's causing us great consternation in the England camp.'It certainly wasn't a security breach and it didn't affect the result thankfully.'

Sweden striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic claims England were fortunate to emerge victorious in Kiev.

Cruel result: Zlatan Ibrahimovic (right) said Sweden were the better team

'I think we were the better team against England. I really do,' said the AC Milan star. 'We should be proud of ourselves because we played a good game. We showed courage and were much better in dead-ball situations.'

Midfielder Sebastian Larsson agreed. 'We were definitely better than England. Their equaliser (by Theo Walcott) happens one time in a thousand. It was a shot I should have covered but it hit me and deflected past the goalkeeper.'
