'We don't have three world-class defenders like Spain' - Berthold advises Germany against formation switch
The former international, who was part of the 1990 World Cup winning side, suggests Joachim Low should not experiment at the back as die Mannschaft "do not have a Sergio Ramos"
Jun 17, 2012 4:45:00 PM
By Igor Mladenovic
Former Germany defender Thomas Berthold has rejected the possibility of Joachim Lowadopting a three-man defence in their upcoming matches at Euro 2012, an idea recently raised in the German media.
Jerome Boateng's suspension has led to suggestions Low could field an extra centre-back on Sunday alongside Holger Badstuber and Mats Hummels, as a lack of right-backs in the squad may force his hand.
However, the 1990 World Cup winner insists it would be a bad idea on the grounds that the Nationalelf's system does not incorporate man-to-man markers, as opposed to Spain and, namely, Sergio Ramos.
"I do not think much of that idea at all," Berthold wrote in his column for Eurosport.
"If a team has three world-class players at the back like Spain, who play man-to-man, then fine.
"But in our team, we have no such players like Sergio Ramos. Therefore, we should stay away.
"When one looks at the Spanish, they do everything so quickly and smoothly, it reminds you of playing a Playstation game.
"We want to measure ourselves against Spain and beat them, we need to play at the same level as them."
The Germans need just a draw against Denmark to progress to the quarter-finals, having won their two previous Group B games against Portugal and Netherlands.
Reflecting on the team who will line up against the Danes, Berthold feels Mesut Ozil, who has been replaced by Toni Kroos in both group matches to date, has shown signs of exhaustion and instead should be utilised as an impact.
"Mesut Ozil looks a bit tired after his long season with Real Madrid," Berthold wrote in his column for Eurosport.
"He could also be played for one half-time only [against Denmark], or brought in later on as a substitute."

'We only have ourselves to blame' - Van Marwijk
The Netherlands coach conceded that his side did not deserve to qualify for the latter stages of Euro 2012 after the Oranje lost all three of their matches in Group B
Jun 17, 2012 11:31:00 PM
By James Vause
Netherlands coach Bert van Marwijk was left to reflect on a tournament of unfulfilled promise as the 2010 World Cup finalists crashed out of Euro 2012 following a 2-1 defeat to Portugal.
The Netherlands, who came into the tournament regarded as one of the favourites, finished bottom of Group B after failing to take a single point from their three games.
Despite losing to both Denmark and Germany, the Netherlands went into their final encounter with Portugal knowing that a win would give them a fighting chance of qualification.
Yet two goals from Cristiano Ronaldo soon dashed any hopes that van Marwijk's men had of reaching the quarter finals.
"I can't deny that this is a major deception for us," Van Marwijk told NOS.
"In all the three games we started well, but we couldn't hold it, just like today. We came up front with 1-0 but we need to hold on after a good start. We weren't able to do that again.
"We didn't have the good shape in this tournament to create goals. We give away chances too easily and then we concede goals. The first match against Denmark was very important. After that match we became insecure."
Van Marwijk was hoping the Netherlands could repeat their form of two years ago when the they reached the 2010 World Cup final, but the 60-year-old admitted that the performances in this tournament never quite reached those standards.
"I knew all along that it would be very hard to go to the quarter-final," he admitted. "I had the hope that we could bring another performance like two years ago at the World Cup.
"When you look at the age of the team, you know that we couldn't get any better. We only have ourselves to blame."
The Oranje's performance has placed a question mark over the future of Van Marwijk as head coach but the Netherlands boss insisted that he would not be drawn into commenting on the speculation.
"I'm not thinking about my future now," he insisted. "I'm busy with a lot of things, but not with that after a match like this."

Van der Sar 'in shock' as the Netherlands crash out of Euro 2012
The former goalkeeper was left in disbelief as the Oranje failed to qualify from the group stages of the European Championship after losing all three of their matches
Jun 17, 2012 10:50:00 PM
By James Vause
Edwin van der Sar was left shocked and disappointed after watching the Netherlands fail to qualify for the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 following their 2-1 defeat to Portugal on Sunday.
Bert van Marwijk's team failed to win a single game in Poland and Ukraine, falling to last place in Group B.
The 2010 World Cup finalists made the best possible start to the game when Rafael van der Vaart curled in a delightful opener after just 11 minutes, but Portugal responded in style with star-man Cristiano Ronaldo netting a goal in each half to dump the Netherlands out of the competition.
"I'm in shock," Van der Sar told RCTI.
"We had it coming. It was seen in the build up to the tournament. We were missing one or two players, some just returning from injury. Then during the tournament, different parts of the team didn't function together."
Van der Sar, who made 130 appearances for the Netherlands during an international career that spanned 14 years, also believes that there will have to be some changes made to the national team if the Dutch are to be a succesful outfit in the future.
Captain Mark van Bommel was dropped by Van Marwijk for the game against Portugal and the former Manchester United goalkeeper believes the AC Milan's international career may be over.
"I think it's over for Mark van Bommel in the national team," he admitted. "There will be one or two changes in this team. It's a disappointing result for us after what has been achieved in the past few years.
"I think [Maarten] Stekelenburg did well, but our overall performance in the second half was below expectations."

Torres: Talk of a fix between Spain and Croatia is disrespectful
The Spain striker believes his side only have to look at Russia to see what happens if they perform complacently during their final group game against the Balkans on Monday
Jun 17, 2012 7:15:00 PM
By Matthew Harold
Fernando Torres claims that any talk about Spain fixing their final game with Croatia is "disrespectful".
A 2-2 draw or higher would see both sides qualify for the quarter-finals of Euro 2012, putting Italy out of the tournament, much akin to the 'Nordic fix' that occurred eight years ago when Sweden and Denmark similarly eliminated the Azzurri.
Speaking at a press conference ahead of the match, Torres said: "To talk about this match being fixed is a lack of respect for Spain, as it is for Croatia."
"We know Croatia's strengths and how to approach the game; we think we can play our game and win but we have respect for them."
"We know their strengths and how to approach the game; we think we can play our game and win the game but we have respect for them because Russia conceded one goal and you are out."
Torres went on to reflect to the surprise developments in Group A on Saturday, which saw Russia exit the competition at the hands of Greece, and the Chelsea ace has called La Roja to not underestimate the Vatreni.
"As Russia showed, they conceded one goal and went out," he continued. "I think the Russia result is a wakeup call for all the teams that you have to win the last game.
"Even six points and you can be out; you have to be wary, especially of an opponent like Croatia."
Kick off between Spain and Croatia on Monday commences at 20:45CET.

Robben and Van der Vaart hint at Dutch squad divisions, labelling Euro 2012 campaign 'rubbish'
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 23:00 GMT, 17 June 2012 | UPDATED: 23:11 GMT, 17 June 2012
Arjen Robben and Rafael van der Vaart laid the blame of Holland's disastrous Euro 2012 campaign firmly at the door of the players - and not under-fire boss Bert van Marwijk.
The Dutch, who reached the World Cup final two years ago, lost to Denmark, Germany and Portugal to finish bottom of Group B.
With allegations of divisions swirling through the Dutch camp, a furious 28-year-old Robben would only say: 'Those problems inside the camp have to stay in the dressing room. I don’t want to really talk about it.
Down and out: Arjen Robben
'I would prefer to get on a bus right now but I am here in front of a camera because it is part of the job.’
'We have failed with the entire squad. It is time to look in the mirror with all the players. We must all do that. Individually we should look in the mirror and as a team. We have been knocked out in a major tournament with three defeats and that is the stone hard truth. It was a disastrous campaign.'
And Van der Vaart, who hit the stunning opener in the 2-1 defeat to Portugal added: 'Holland was poor. The conclusion of this tournament has to be hard and we were bad.
Feeling for the fans: Rafael van der Vaart
'The players all have to take the blame. We have all been below par. None of us have delivered. But what is the whole point of concluding that, actually.
'I feel most sorry for the Dutch fans. They turned up in thousands to watch this rubbish.'
Meanwhile, Van Marwijk responded shirtily to questions surrounding his future.
'I'm still not concerned with my future,' he said when asked if he would resign. 'It is too soon after the match.'
Under pressure: Bert van Marwijk
Mark van Bommel, who was left out of the starting line-up by father-in-law Van Marwijk in preference of the more attacking Van der Vaart, told De Telegraaf: 'After the last two years things have changed and the atmosphere was different this time. I'm talking only for myself.'

It's your fault we were knocked out! Arshavin under fire after arguing with fans
By ASHLEY GRAY PUBLISHED: 23:01 GMT, 17 June 2012 | UPDATED: 23:01 GMT, 17 June 2012
Andrey Arshavin is facing widespread calls to be axed from the Russia team after reportedly arguing with fans after the country's Euro 2012 exit. The Arsenal forward struggled to keep his cool when confronted in the lobby of Warsaw's luxury Bristol Hotel after the shock 1-0 defeat by Greece, according to Oleg Koshelev, a journalist with Russian media outlet Gazeta.
'The fact that we didn't meet your expectations is not our problem - it's your problem,' he reportedly told fans.
Exit: Andrey Arshavin makes for the team bus after Russia were knocked out
The honorary president of the Russian FA Vyacheslav Koloskov strongly condemned the 31-year-old.'Such words are not worthy of the captain,' he said. 'Arshavin has never been in the position of traveling across the country to support the team at his own expense.
'The whole team should bow down to these guys. Fans come to see good football, total commitment from players and the willingness to stand up for their country.'Instead, the captain says it's not the players' problem, but the fans' problem.'I believe that such a captain should not be in the team.'
During the exchange, Arshavin was apparently made aware that he was talking to a member of the Russian parliament.Arshavin is said to have replied: 'When I am at the Duma I will present a report in front of you.'We lost because we didn't score and Greece scored.
Nothing will change because of these discussions.' Fans, coaches and former players reacted with anger to the report, and former Spartak Moscow striker Valery Reingold said: 'Arshavin is impudent and a lout, a person who reached the limit of insolence.
Shock: Russia were stunned by Greece in the final group game
'The team suffers for his antics. A coach like Viktor Ponedelnik would kick him you know where and send him back to Arsenal, or wherever he's playing now.
'This is a spoiled kid who can't plow a field.'
The Russian FA's former press spokesman called for current FA president Sergey Fursenko to quit and said Arshavin should be 'permanently deprived of the right to play for the national team'. Arshavin has returned to Moscow with team-mates but is yet to respond. His usual post-match interview on his official website said simply: 'So far I have nothing to say.'
None of the players would speak to journalists and virtually all snubbed fans as they checked out of the Bristol Hotel on Sunday morning. Alan Dzagoev was one of the few to be praised, receiving shouts of 'good lad' as he boarded the team bus, but he looked glum on what was his 22nd birthday.
All change: Russia had looked dangerous after their opening game but fell away
Arshavin refused to speak to journalists on arrival at Moscow's Vnukovo Airport. Dzagoev was the only member of the squad who would answer questions. No fans arrived to greet the team.
Arshavin did however tell Sport-Express: 'Of course I wanted to play better in the tournament. 'People like to point fingers. Throughout my career, so much has been poured on both on me and my teams that another bucket doesn't make a lot of difference.'Every man will find the explanation that he wants to find (for our failure).'I definitely want to be in the fight to get to the World Cup.''I'm going to relax for a week. I have a valid contract (with Arsenal), so the question of my employment is not so acute. But it is possible there will be options.'
Cool Low never feared elimination: I had a plan, insists Germany coach
By SPORTSMAIL REPORTER PUBLISHED: 22:26 GMT, 17 June 2012 | UPDATED: 22:26 GMT, 17 June 2012
Keeping cool: Joachim Low's germany will now face Greece in the quarter-finals
Joachim Low insisted he was never worried about Germany being knocked out of Euro 2012 by Denmark, even though at one stage his men were one goal away from elimination.
With Portugal leading against Holland going into the last 20 minutes, one goal for Denmark would have been enough to see them qualify together with the Portuguese and send Germany, who had won their first two group games, back home. But Lars Bender's goal handed Germany a 2-1 victory and ended any doubt.
'I had a plan,' said Low. 'Of course I had considered what would have happened if Denmark had in some way suddenly scored a goal but I never had that feeling. 'I was pretty relaxed because it doesn't get you anywhere when you panic. 'Bastian Schweinsteiger and Sami Khedira were always in control and I just had the feeling we would score.'
Low's confidence was based on what he had seen in the first hour of the game in Lviv, during which Germany appeared in control.
'Denmark played with a stoic calmness and it seemed like they could not care less,' he said. 'I never had the feeling that Denmark were playing to win it. They wanted to keep the result, were happy with the draw and then maybe they would get a free-kick or corner that they could take advantage of, but they did not attack much.
'They sat back a lot, even though they had to win. They had one or two good chances, but no more than that, and I think in the second half we did a decent job given the pressure. 'Maybe had we played Holland or Portugal (in the final group game), they would have done more for a win than Denmark did.'
Nevertheless, Low was not fully satisfied with his own side's performance and said they can get better, despite coming through the group with a 100% record. They play Greece in the quarter-finals.
'We missed three or four chances and did not have the killer instinct,' he said. 'I think that in midfield and at the back, there were often plenty of gaps and we could have got control of Denmark better.
Under control: Low had every confidence in Bastian Schweinsteiger
'Greece will be similar and will try to take the tempo out like Denmark. We can still improve.'Denmark coach Morten Olsen expressed his pride at his side's performance and explained why Low had the impression that his side was so negative.
'If you try to put them under pressure, then you can get punished quickly,' he said. 'One-one was a good result for us because then you just need a lucky punch maybe with a set-piece, but if you gamble too much, they can hit you quickly.'We are disappointed not to have gone through, but this team has a future.
'Compliments to all of our players - they played a great tournament and it is only minor details which make a difference.'
One of those minor details was a penalty appeal when Nicklas Bendtner had his shirt tugged by Holger Badstuber inside the Germany penalty area, impeding him from doing more with a one-on-one situation with Germany goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.
Holger the holder: Badstuber (right) tugs back Nicklas Bendtner but no penalty was given
That incident happened just minutes before Bender netted Germany's winner and it was a moment which could have decided the encounter and indeed the group in Denmark's favour.
'I think we should have had a penalty,' said Olsen. 'It is not permitted to pull your opponent's shirt in the box and that is what this extra referee is there for, but clearly he did not see it.'Olsen was not making that his principle excuse for defeat and elimination, however.
'Maybe we lost it by not holding Portugal to a draw, but there are so many ifs and buts,' he said.'When all is said and done, we have done very well at this tournament.'
Del Bosque reiterates Spain not thinking about a pact with Croatia
La Roja's coach has dismissed suggestions that the titleholders could play for a high-scoring draw against Croatia in order to eliminate Italy from the European Championship

Spain coach Vicente del Bosque has reacted angrily to suggestions that the reigning champions could arrange for a 2-2 draw in Monday's Group C match versus Croatia.
A high-scoring stalemate would mean the end of Italy's Euro 2012 campaign while sending both the Spanish and Croatians into the quarter-finals, but Del Bosque has stressed that he's not interested in a pact with Slaven Bilic's side.

"I believe in a clean game. I am not thinking for one instant about such a possibility," Del Bosque stated at a press conference.
"Bringing this up over and over again is not in the best interest of the game. The more we talk about this, the more we give attention to the people who talk bad about the game.
"I am sure that Croatia think the same way as we do. We are participating at a European football party, and we have to be respectful."
Spain's match versus Croatia kicks off at 20:45CET, with Italy and Republic of Ireland facing off at the same time.

Spain captain Iker Casillas has blamed nerves as the holders struggled to impose themselves in their final group game encounter against Croatia at Euro 2012.
La Roja topped Group C following their hard-fought 1-0 win, with Jesus Navas netting the winner three minutes from time to seal the three points.
And Casillas was happy to see his side progress, but acknowledged that Spain must deal with the pressure better if they are to reclaim the trophy on July 1.
The goalkeeper told Telecinco: “We had to suffer, but it's normal. There's not a single weak rival, and everyone who plays against Spain give the 100 per cent. We've been good taking advantage of the situation.“
The captain had to be in top form to keep a clean sheet, with Ivan Rakitic’s close-range header the biggest threat.
Casillas added: “Fortunately, I was running to the ball, [and] in the good place, and I could stop his header. I was feeling good tonight. And I left the pitch with happiness."
And the shot-stopper blamed the players’ nerves in what led to a difficult performance against Croatia, but feels that after advancing from the group the ‘do-or-die’ nature of the knockout round could now help Spain to perform better.
He added: “It was difficult because we went all nervous. With an isolated action we would have been out. Now we have got a life or death game, and I think that's not bad at all for Spain. “We go step by step, and then we'll see where can we get.
"I don't think this is the same Spain than World Cup. But it's because everyone know us already. Now, when [Andres] Iniesta or [David] Silva gets the ball, they [have] got three players with them. Spain [have] got a marvellous touch, and everyone knows that."
We do what we want, Sol! Campbell faces 'coffin' backlash from England fans in Donetsk

Sol Campbell faces a backlash from a section of England fans in Donetsk tonight who will parade a coffin at the Donbass Arena in protest at his Euro 2012 warning.
Former Three Lions defender Campbell, now retired from the game, urged fans not to travel to Ukraine amid fears of racist violence, telling a BBC Panorama documentary that they would 'come back in a coffin'.

But supporters at a nearby fanzone in the Ukrainian city have slammed the ex-Spurs and Arsenal star's statement as 'ludicrous', insisting they have been warmly welcomed by the co-hosts.
Pete Harper, a black England fan from Sheffield, told The Sun: 'Campbell’s remarks were ludicrous. I’ve had a wonderful reception from the Ukrainian people.'
Anti-Campbell chants and placards were presented at a campsite on the eve of tonight's decisive Group D clash and fans will carry a coffin into the stadium as a further protest.
However some fans will not wear replica shirts to the game fearing trouble from Ukrainian hooligans.
But coffin organiser Tim Ashwell said: 'We hope thousands of supporters will join us.'
