Thug who confronted Ferdinand banned from watching Man City for three years, but escapes jail sentence

By DAVID HARRISON and PAT HURST, PRESS ASSOCIATION PUBLISHED: 17:06 GMT, 4 January 2013 | UPDATED: 22:39 GMT, 4 January 2013

A Manchester City fan who stormed on to the football field to confront Rio Ferdinand at the end of last month's Manchester derby has been banned from attending matches for three years.Matthew Stott, 21, was told he came close to going to prison, but instead his 56-day jail term was suspended for 12 months.Stott had to be restrained by City goalkeeper Joe Hart from confronting Ferdinand, who was already bleeding from a cut caused by a coin thrown from the stands at the end of the match.

Too late: The police and stewards couldn't prevent fans from getting onto the pitch after United's winning goal

Ferdinand had been celebrating Robin van Persie's late winner for United at City's Etihad Stadium when tempers boiled over.TV footage of the incident was played at Manchester Magistrates Court showing Stott, who had sunk eight pints of lager before kick-off, trying to get at the United defender.Andy Holt, prosecuting, told the court after police caught him and cuffed him on the pitch he shouted at the officers: 'F*** off you Munich bastards! F*** off you Munich t****!'Stott, a landscape gardener of Southfields, Knutsford, pleaded guilty to encroaching on the field of play and using insulting words or behaviour during the incident on December 9.

His father, who attended the match with his son, sat in the public gallery during sentencing by District Judge Paul Richardson.
As well as the football ban and suspended jail sentence, he was ordered to do 120 hours community service, pay £145 in costs and observe an 8pm to 6am home curfew for three months. District Judge Richardson commended England goalkeeper Hart for quickly stopping Stott getting at Ferdinand. He said it was 'difficult to associate' the glowing character references for Stott with what he had seen on screen.

He added: 'He chose to attack somebody on a football pitch. But for the timely and appropriate intervention of the City goalkeeper, the situation would have been a lot worse and could have triggered a serious incident of disorder.'
Rebecca Caulfield, defending Stott, said he had drunk eight pints of lager before the incident which was not planned, and he could now not remember what he had done. She added: 'He's lost his job, he's received death threats and his family has suffered intimidation by members of the public, in person, by telephone, camping outside his father's flat, and threats on Facebook.'

Stott issued an apology through his solicitor the day after the match saying he was 'extremely ashamed' of his actions and apologised to Ferdinand and United's fans. The City season ticket holder, who had never been in trouble with the police before, said he had let his club down. Officials at City immediately withdrew his season ticket and said later if he was convicted at court he would face a lifetime ban.Millions of TV viewers watching the game televised live by Sky Sports, also saw United striker Wayne Rooney being forced to dodge an array of objects thrown in his direction as he took a corner. The match ended in the ugly scenes when Robin van Persie's injury-time free-kick gave United the three points after City had previously fought back from 2-0 down.

Stott was sentenced today along with a number of other fans involved in trouble.
Turkey farmer Christopher Johnson, 52, of Ancoats Lane, Alderley Edge, Cheshire admitted threatening and abusive behaviour after invading the pitch and running towards United fans, gesturing, "come on" before his arrest. He was given 100 hours community service, £145 in costs and a three-year football banning order.Joshua Rushton, 17, from Farr Street, Edgeley, Stockport was given a £100 fine and ordered to pay £85 costs and given a three-year football banning order after pleading guilty to throwing a coin and a bottle at rival spectators at the ground.

Blooded: Ferdinand was hit just above the eye by a coin

Rushton was already serving a temporary three-match ban at the time of the derby for misbehaviour and should not have been in the stadium anyway.District Judge Richardson allowed the Press to name the defendant, who is still a juvenile, following a legal challenge by Mike Keegan of the Manchester Evening News.Rushton, who has a string of convictions, told the judge, 'they can't put me in the paper' because he was not yet 18. But the judge, who had already warned Rushton about his 'lip' decided he should be named. Rushton stormed out of court.

Manchester University student Sam Weatherby, 21, of Grant Street, Farnworth, Bolton, who is studying a sports management degree and works part-time at Asda, was given 100 hours community service and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £60 victim surcharge. Philip O'Leary, 24, of Heysbank Road, Disley, Stockport, got the same sentence after the pair broke their football banning orders by going into Manchester city centre on a day when United were playing a game. Christopher O'Neil, 21, of Swainsthorpe Drive, Manchester, Andrew Martin, 20, of Northdale Drive, and Nicholas Morley, 21, of Chapel Lane, both Blackley, were all charged with being drunk and disorderly after trouble broke out at the Flying Horse pub in Blackley following the game. All admitted the offence and were given a £60 fine with £80 costs to be taken out of their state benefits.

'Horrific' tackle is point of no return for Balotelli as Mancini accepts mad Mario will never change

By CHRIS WHEELERPUBLISHED: 22:51 GMT, 4 January 2013 | UPDATED: 22:51 GMT, 4 January 2013

Mario Balotelli's camouflage Bentley was back at Manchester City’s training ground yesterday, as conspicuous as ever. The harder you try and hide some things the more obvious they become, and that is certainly true of Balotelli’s future in English football. The errant Italian is never going to change, whatever Roberto Mancini says publicly. The more chances he gives Balotelli, whether it’s 100 or 1,000, the more let down he will feel the next time. For all the predictable noises made yesterday, Mancini now knows that.

Push and pull: Mancini and Balotelli raged at each other

He realises the task he took on as Inter Milan coach nearly seven years ago is simply getting out of hand. It has become a distraction to City and on Thursday, when the two men grappled in training, it became a public embarrassment. The tackle that caused Thursday’s training ground fracas was ‘horrific’, according to those who witnessed it. Sportsmail understands Balotelli’s lunge at Scott Sinclair was so ugly and wild that Mancini felt compelled to try to get the wayward Italian off the field.

‘This was not just a mistimed tackle or a lazy tackle that you sometimes get towards the end of training,’ said a source. ‘This was an horrendous, horrific slash that looked premeditated and could have left Scott Sinclair injured. ‘Only Mario will know if it was premeditated but it looked bad. Happily Sinclair was able to see it coming and get himself out of the situation without being hurt. But that’s not the point.
‘Mario has to learn he can’t go round kicking people just because he feels like it.’

The most pressing question is whether the 22-year-old can be trusted to play for the club again. Balotelli is expected to be on the bench for today’s FA Cup tie at home to Watford and, as Mancini pointed out, the rush of blood that led to his wild tackle on Sinclair and confrontation with his manager can strike at any time.

Led off: The striker was pulled away from Mancini by a coach

article-2256586-16BCC5E6000005DC-142_634x357.jpg

‘What he did yesterday he can do also during the game,’ said Mancini. ‘This is the problem. If he doesn’t change it will be very difficult in the future. For him, not me. Mario is 22 years old. He needs to change.’ Asked if Balotelli’s problems were linked to issues with his former girlfriend, Raffaella Fico, who gave birth to his daughter last month, Mancini added: ‘I don’t know if it is true or not. But I think he should understand the career of a player is very short. He is 22 but three, four and five years can pass in one second and I hope the day arrives when he understands his quality.’

Despite talk of Sheik Mansour having a soft spot for Balotelli, he is unlikely to be impressed at pictures of a player he pays £170,000 a week tussling with his manager. Mancini insisted the club’s owners will back him whatever he decides to do and dismissed suggestions he has been too lenient with Balotelli after a string of problems in the striker’s two-and-a-half years at City. City are a forward short because of injury to Sergio Aguero but one source described the squad as more ‘serene’ when Balotelli is absent.

Mancini yesterday tried to play down the clash, saying: ‘Yesterday was nothing. Compared to other times, what he did was nothing.’ Even so, Mancini confirmed the severity of the tackle on Sinclair that sparked the incident. ‘It was two red cards,’ said the City boss, only half joking. Mancini will not punish Balotelli, who stood his ground rather than make any aggressive moves towards his manager. It is clear, however, Mancini blames the striker for the bust-up, dismissing suggestions his behaviour was far from befitting a Premier League manager.

article-2256586-16BCBB95000005DC-169_634x511.jpg

Crunch: Balotelli's tackle left a player on the floor (left), believed to be Scott Sinclair

‘We were playing a game and Mario kicked his team-mate,’ said Mancini. ‘I told him, “Go inside, leave the pitch”. He said no so I took his shirt and I pushed him off the pitch. There was no fight. The pictures made it look worse. ‘I did nothing. I know it’s unusual for a manager to do this but I’m not regretful. I lost my temper for two seconds. Because he didn’t want to leave the pitch and he should leave. This is a thing that can happen. Usually it happens between two players but this was different.

‘These sorts of things can happen at any club. But the difference is other clubs probably have screens around their training pitch.’ Queen’s Park Rangers boss Harry Redknapp thinks managers jeopardise the respect of players if they lose their temper with them. ‘You don’t get any anywhere behaving like that towards players,’ he said. ‘You lose their respect. You’ve got to talk to them. What are you going to get out of swearing and shouting and screaming at them all the time? It’s wrong.’

You could almost sense Manchester United’s delight as their rivals tried to contain another Balotelli-induced crisis. There are no public footpaths next to United’s training ground. ‘You’re protecting the possibility of your success,’ said United boss Sir Alex Ferguson. ‘Do major companies tell opponents what they’re doing? I’m sure they don’t. Cameramen want to be at training sessions, which I think is ridiculous.

‘We’ve added trees. The electric fence helps and the alligators in the moathouse. Sometimes we get a photographer over in the woods but since we’ve put those wolves in there they never come now!’
As Balotelli has discovered, camouflage would probably be pointless as well.

Balotelli list of shame

CAR CRASH (August 2010)
Just days after signing for City, Balotelli hits the headlines after crashing his Audi R8 en route to the club's training ground. Balotelli is found to be carrying £5,000 in cash at the time of the accident and when police ask why, he reportedly replies: 'Because I am rich.'

FIRST RED CARD (November 2010)

Balotelli scores his first Premier League goals in a 2-0 win at West Brom but the achievement is marred when he sees red following a clash with Youssouf Mulumbu.

WILSHERE SNUB (December 2010)

City boss Roberto Mancini says Balotelli must change his attitude following his claims he had never heard of Jack Wilshere after beating the Arsenal midfielder to FIFA's Young Player of the Year award.

DART-THROWING INCIDENT (March 2011)

Balotelli again hits trouble after it emerges he threw a dart at a City youth team player. No one was hurt in the incident and he escapes punishment.

SECOND RED CARD (March 2011)
Balotelli apologises to his team-mates after he is sent off during a Europa League tie with Dynamo Kiev for a reckless challenge on Goran Popov.

BACK-HEEL BLUNDER (July 2011)
Balotelli is immediately substituted by an enraged Mancini after performing a pirouette and back-heeling wide when clean through on goal in a pre-season friendly against the Los Angeles Galaxy.

FIREWORK INCIDENT (October 2011)

The Italian has another run-in with the emergency services after a firework is set off in the bathroom of his home, triggering a fire. The next day, he scores in the Manchester derby and celebrates by revealing a T-shirt which reads: "Why always me?"

THIRD RED CARD (November 2011)

The third red card of Balotelli's City career arrives in a league match against Liverpool, the 21-year-old dismissed for two yellow cards.

BREAKING CURFEW (December 2011)
Balotelli breaks a club 48-hour curfew by visiting a curry house ahead of a match against Chelsea.

RICHARDS CLASH (December 2011)
Just days after Balotelli's curfew lapse, he again attracts negative headlines after pictures emerge of a training-ground bust-up with team-mate Micah Richards.

PARKER CLASH (January 2012)
Balotelli was charged with violent conduct by the Football Association, and subsequently handed a four-match ban, after appearing to stamp on the head of Tottenham's Scott Parker during a Premier League match.

INTER PRESS CONFERENCE (March 2012)
Balotelli gatecrashes the press conference to announce the appointment of Andrea Stramaccioni as Inter Milan's new coach.

FOURTH RED CARD (April 2012)
Balotelli sees red for two bookable challenges on Arsenal full-back Bacary Sagna. Also guilty of a shocking first half knee-high challenge on Gunners midfielder Alex Song.

Former Liverpool owners agree a settlement over sale of the club

An out-of-court settlement has been reached regarding disputes over the sale of Liverpool in October 2010.

Former owners Tom Hicks and George Gillett were upset about the sale of the club by then directors Sir Martin Broughton and Christian Purslow, along with current director Ian Ayre.

As a result, a number of allegations were made by the former owners against the three directors which resulted in legal proceedings as the allegations were denied.

Now though, Liverpool have released a statement saying a settlement has been reached and the claims have been withdrawn.

The statement reads: “The parties have now agreed a settlement [the terms of which are confidential].

“All claims and allegations made against Messrs Broughton, Purslow and Ayre have been withdrawn by Messrs Hicks and Gillett and all legal proceedings between the parties concluded.”

'Frank is our greatest ever' - Chelsea fan pleads with Abramovich to keep Lampard in open letter

With the 34-year-old looking set to leave Stamford Bridge this summer, one Blues supporter has gone public to try and convince the Russian owner to give him a new deal

COMMENT
By Dan Levene | Blues Chronicle

Dear Roman,

Excuse the frank approach...

Our No.8 looks like he's off in the summer, and I wanted to say a few words about a decision many think you've already taken over Frank Lampard's future.

I, like a lot of fans, consider Frank to be Chelsea's greatest ever player.

Hey, maybe you do too. After all, you were there when he lifted the European Cup in Munich this May, you saw the goals that secured our first ever Premier League title in Bolton eight years ago, and you will have also enjoyed plenty of the 100+ goals he netted between those two glorious occasions.

I know you couldn't be there last weekend, when Frank drew level with Kerry Dixon as Chelsea's second greatest ever goalscorer. I never thought I'd live to see a midfielder score 193 goals for one club. Did you?
And, as things stand, just 10 more goals would render all of those arguments over his greatness surplus: maybe forever etched in history alongside the legend '1st – 203 goals'.

These are among the reasons why so many people are so upset at the idea of you handing Frank his cards at the end of the season.

That and the fact that for the almost 12 years he has been with Chelsea, Frank has been an absolute gent: always great with the fans, always first to go over and thank a crowd that has traipsed across country or continent to see the team.

Of course if you considered all of that to be historical whimsy, then I couldn't disagree with you.
Players cannot be kept on the payroll forever on the basis of past glories, or we'd still be seeing Gianfranco Zola and Ron Harris in the squad.

However, it does frame the context for where Frank is now.

He always has been, and remains to this day, one of the fittest players in the Premier League.
He is among the first to arrive at Cobham each morning and, I'm told, among the last to leave each evening.

Many of those who resent Frank's success, the 'Big Fat Frank' brigade, say that he did not possess natural talent: and, again, there is some truth there.

Because Frank has had to work hard for everything he has ever achieved. And it is that work ethic that has elevated him to the almost unimpeachable position of Chelsea's Greatest.

I can see there are reasons not to keep Frank.

At the age of 34 he doesn't fit in with the image you wish to propagate of Chelsea as a young, pacey side full of exciting players.

He's from Romford not Rio, and can't easily be dropped into the 4-2-3-1 just-like-watching-Brazil formation you seem to expect from your managers these days, effective or not.

And maybe that wage of £160k a week is a bit on the high side for a 34-year-old: in which case, maybe it would help to raise the issue in negotiations of a pay-as-you-play deal (Chelsea 'sources' revealed last week that no such negotiations had come up).

In recent times the club's Board have taken so many ill-judged moves on your behalf: the failed coup at Chelsea Pitch Owners, the sacking of Roberto Di Matteo, the appointment of Rafael Benitez.

Each time your lieutenants have protested that they never expected the opposition from fans to be anything like what was seen.

If Frank is given the heave-ho it will be another such moment.

At this time of in-fighting and divisions at Chelsea, do we really need another?

And, if this really is about money, surely one or two more years for Frank make better Financial Fair Play sense than one or two more years for Fernando, who earns more and offers less?

Anyway, that's all I wanted to say. Hope you, Dasha and the kids are well. Maybe see you at Swansea a week on Wednesday?

Yours frankly,

Dan

Gerrard: I wouldn't confess if I scored handball winner against Manchester United

The Liverpool captain admits he would celebrate if he scored via his hand at Old Trafford on Sunday and has branded anyone who calls Luis Suarez a cheat a hypocrite

Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard says he would not confess if he scored a handball winner against Manchester United this Sunday.

His team-mate Luis Suarez was embroiled in another controversy after the ball clearly struck his hand in the lead-up to his goal for Liverpool against Mansfield in the FA Cup last weekend.

The Uruguayan was castigated by sections of the press and public for not openly admitting his offence, but Gerrard has branded anyone calling him a cheat a hyprocrite.

"Look, I’m not going to lie to you - of course I celebrate", he told The Mirror.

"I can’t sit here and claim I would run to the linesman or referee and say, 'I’ve hand-balled it' at Old Trafford.

"What would Wayne Rooney do? What did [then-Manchester United goalkeeper] Roy Carroll do years ago when the ball was four yards over the line [in a match at Old Trafford against Tottenham]?

"I never saw Alex Ferguson or Carroll run to the referee or linesman and say it was over the line, did you?”

Suarez is no stranger to controversy, especially at Old Trafford, but Gerrard believes Liverpool need to concentrate on the match, which he described as still the biggest rivalry in football.
“It is massive, and still the biggest game for both clubs,” he explained.

“They are obviously above us in league titles, but we’ve still got more European Cups than them - so the rivalry is not going anywhere for a long time.

“Manchester City have their new owners and stuff, but Alex Ferguson was quoted last year saying Liverpool is still their biggest game - and that’s not changed [on] this side either.”

Manchester United sign two Chinese sponsorship deals

The Red Devils have announced two partnerships with banking group China Construction Bank and soft drinks producer Wahaha, with benefits for the club's 108 million Chinese fans

Manchester United have announced two new three-year sponsorship deals with two Chinese companies.

The Red Devils have an estimated 108 million fans in China, and have announced new links with soft drinks manufacturer Wahaha and one of the country’s most prominent banking groups, China Construction Bank (CCB).

Wahaha has been the largest beverage producer in China for the last 11 years, and will become the club’s first official soft drinks partner in the country.

They produce a number of branded products including milk drinks and energy drinks, having been founded in 1987 by Zong Qinghou.

Meanwhile, the link with CCB means they hold the exclusive rights to produce an official Manchester United branded credit card in mainland China, offering a range of exclusive benefits to their 102 million personal banking customers.

CCB received more than 30 awards in the first half of 2012, and the Red Devils’ commercial director Richard Arnold is delighted to have signed the deal with them.

“We are very pleased to be partnering with China Construction Bank to bring the official Manchester United Credit Card to China,” he told the club’s official website.

"Manchester United has a huge following in China of 108 million. We know from our visits there, including to Shanghai last summer, that our Chinese followers have always been among the most supportive.

"Through our relationship with CCB we hope not only to give fans an excellent product, but also bring them closer to the club they so passionately support.

"As China’s fiscal and industrial strength continues to grow, it is establishing itself as a leader in the global economy and the place for businesses to invest.

In 80 major cities in China, CCB have almost 60% of all branches, making them the ideal partner to connect with our fans.”

“Together with our TV and mobile partners, financial services products give us tangible ways of providing real benefits to our fans that enable them to establish a closer relationship with their favourite team.”

Arnold also spoke of his pride at being able to work with Wahaha, especially given the close links that the club have established with their enormous Chinese following.

He added: "This is the club’s first sponsorship of its kind in China and we are delighted to be able to work with a company which, like Manchester United, is dedicated to innovation and leadership in its field.

“Wahaha is one of the most iconic brands in China and one that has come to symbolise the dynamism and strength of the modern Chinese economy.

“What better way to endorse this modern-day success story than to partner with the number one club in the world’s biggest sport?

“This new collaboration between United and Wahaha will enable us to engage with our local followers all year round through great products and activities.”

Mourinho: One day I will return to England

The successful manager has fondly reflected on his time at Chelsea, and says he is determined to return to England in the future

Jan 15, 2013 8:35:00 AM
By Stefan Coerts

235808hp2.jpg

Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho has once more reiterated his desire to return to the Premier League at some point in the future.

The 49-year-old enjoyed success in England at Chelsea from 2004 until 2007, and he has nothing but fond memories of his time in the English top flight.

"My memories from English football could not be better," Mourinho said ahead of the FA150 launch.

“In England you feel the real passion for the game. It’s not just about passion for clubs, it’s mainly about passion for football – and you feel it. I loved it from the first to the last day.

"But I know that one day I will come back because English football means a lot to myself."

Mourinho has an ongoing contract with Madrid, but a number of recent reports have suggested that he could leave the club at the end of the 2012-13 season.
