Leeds against Chelsea stands for the lingering hatred that is the North-South divide in the flesh

By MICHAEL WALKER PUBLISHED: 22:30 GMT, 17 December 2012 | UPDATED: 22:42 GMT, 17 December 2012

Fifteen minutes into their Barclays Premier League game at Sunderland 10 days ago, the 3,000 Chelsea fans broke into a chant. Their side were 1-0 up, after a great Fernando Torres volley. They did not chant about Torres, though. It was the minute before these fans sang about Roberto Di Matteo, so it was not his moment. On the touchline Rafa Benitez paced and pointed. It was the first Chelsea game after their Champions League exit; there were plenty of issues to occupy Blues thoughts.

Up for the cup: Ron Harris and John Hollins parade the trophy after the match

Leeds, too, have issues. One of them is a collective yearning about slipping off the radar, so perhaps there is strange reassurance taken from remaining on Chelsea’s. Which is why there is so much anticipation about tomorrow night at Elland Road. For the first time in eight-and-a-half years, Leeds United play Chelsea. It is the League Cup quarter-final, but it is more than that: it is the resumption of one of English football’s most fierce rivalries.

Given that around 200 miles separate Elland Road from Stamford Bridge, this is no local derby. Yet it carries that intensity and has done for decades. This is an accepted fact in English football, yet why?
It can be vicious: witness the 1970 FA Cup final replay, when referee Eric Jennings let so much go that Hugh McIlvanney wrote: ‘At times, it appeared that Mr Jennings would give a free-kick only on production of a death certificate.’There was one booking. David Elleray ‘re-refereed’ the game years later and said there should have been six reds and 20 yellows.

Rout: Chelsea's Mickey Thomas is mobbed by fans after his team's 5-0 win over their rivals in 1984

But what did Chelsea’s supporters sing? ‘We all hate Leeds and Leeds.’ It was to the tune of The Dam Busters. In the Midlands, Leeds United had just lost 2-1 at Derby County to sit 14th in the Championship. They were separated by 31 places from Chelsea, in a different division. Leeds United have played Stockport County in League One more recently than faced Chelsea in the top flight. But what is the first song frequently heard from the Leeds Kop? It contains the phrase: ‘Shoot the Chelsea scum.’ That former Chelsea chairman Ken Bates is Leeds chairman does not seem irrelevant.

Famous faces: Paul Reaney (left) and Jack Charlton (right) hugging Peter Lorimer

The Leeds great, Peter Lorimer, who was never mistaken for an angel, remarked that Chelsea ‘kicked everything above grass’. No foul was given for Eddie McCreadie’s kung-fu kick on Billy Bremner’s head. ‘It was just the way the game was played back then,’ Paul Madeley said on Monday, from Yorkshire. Then there was the last game of the 1983-84 season. Chelsea beat Leeds 5-0 at Stamford Bridge to win the old Second Division, prompting a riot as Leeds fans dismantled the scoreboard and police scurried to keep fans apart.Yet the 1960s source of this rivalry would seem to be in sport. In 1963, Chelsea were promoted to the old First Division; in 1964, Leeds were promoted.

They were coming teams brimming with talent and by 1965, both finished in the top three, behind title-winners Manchester United.
Chelsea and Leeds had become challengers, and the tension derived from just that, the challenge. Yet there was something else to this. It is fairly amazing to note that Chelsea have never bought a senior Leeds player, not one; Leeds did not sign a Chelsea player until Tony Dorigo moved to Elland Road in 1991. Reviewing the two teams of the mid-1960s through to that volcanic 1970 Cup final, another pattern emerges: this was the North-South divide made flesh. Both Leeds and Chelsea had Scotsmen and Irishmen in their sides but when it came to Englishmen, of the recognised great Don Revie XI, only Paul Reaney was born south of Coventry, and he grew up in Yorkshire.

Jack Charlton, Madeley, Norman Hunter, Terry Cooper and Mick Jones were all Northern men, like Middlesbrough-born Revie.
As for Chelsea, their London contingent was considerable — Peter Bonetti, Ron Harris, Alan Hudson, Marvin Hinton, David Webb and Peter Houseman were all Londoners. John Hollins and Peter Osgood both came from the Home Counties.‘From within the dressing room, of course, we were rivals and the lads would be really up for any games against Chelsea and Liverpool at that time, but off the pitch, we were all quite friendly,’ Madeley added.‘Having said that, there was the extra North-South dimension with Chelsea, which did add a bit more fuel to the fire.’

article-2249634-00E6D98E00000190-726_634x467.jpg

Across the divide: Ken Bates, then chairman of Chelsea, appeals to the fans to keep off the pitch after winning promotion to Division One in 1984

Changing times: Roman Abramovich (right) is now the owner of Chelsea

Hollins, with 593 appearances, is as Chelsea as they come. He recalled the origin of this modern fixation. ‘In the early 60s we were an up-and-coming very young side. Leeds were the same, but a little ahead of us,’ he explained. ‘We were young, cheeky, London, Chelsea.‘In one of my first seasons, we were unbeaten in our first 10 games and top of the league. We were running people off the pitch.‘I remember a game at Leeds in the season of 1964-65, around this time of year — it was always this time of year at Leeds. It was tense. The game should not have been played because the pitch was iced up. We didn’t have the studs you have now. We changed ours before kick-off — we went for the leather type with little nails in them. So did they.

article-2249634-0005FB7700000C1D-773_634x415.jpg

True blue: Hollins recalled several feisty clashes with Leeds

‘All of a sudden you had a good grip on the pitch, you could turn and play. The thing is, if you did catch anyone with a stud, you could rip a sock or something. It finished 2-2, I think. That was a day we thought, “Dirty b******s, wait ’til you come back to our place”.‘Then, there was the semi-final of the FA Cup at Villa Park in 1967. We won 1-0. Leeds had a goal disallowed, a shot from Lorimer. The referee said the wall wasn’t back the full 10 yards!

That really got them. The word “hatred” came up then, and we were at each other all the time on the pitch. We knew who to hit.’
That was April 1967. In, October Leeds got revenge, beating Chelsea 7-0 at Elland Road.‘Leeds started like a house on fire, remembering what had gone on before,’ Hollins said. ‘They did to us what they did to Southampton that famous time. We couldn’t get near them. Bremner was their engine, their spark, brave as a lion.’Bitterness was gathering. Hollins saw it personified in two men — Charlton and Osgood.

article-2249634-040F155F0000044D-472_634x392.jpg

Tricky: Peter Osgood escaped Charlton and scored this diving header in the contentious 1970 FA Cup Final replay

‘That was personal. Ossie used to elbow him, knock him, try to get him annoyed. Ossie was one of the best at that.‘He enjoyed Leeds games; he got at them. And that header in the replay in Manchester was his best goal ever, I think that was his favourite goal.‘He didn’t like Jack Charlton. At one point in the final, Ossie and Jack had a fight off the ball. The ref just waved play on.’On Wednesday, there will be fewer Yorkshiremen and Londoners on the pitch, but the officials will need to be vigilant. The police are on alert. But beneath the tension is a football match. As Hollins added: ‘I remember, after the first game at Wembley in 1970, we all shook hands, we never swapped shirts then.‘I helped carry Billy Bremner off the pitch because he had cramp. Then I got cramp. We were good mates, too. It was just when the white or blue shirt went on...’

FA unveils Inclusion and Anti-Discrimination Action Plan

English football's governing body has stepped up efforts to combat the problem after a number of high-profile scandals this year, and have now revealed its latest scheme

Dec 20, 2012 3:24:00 PM

By Al Hain-Cole

221795hp2.jpg

The FA has announced a collaboration with representatives from the football authorities, former players and campaign groups in an effort to stamp out discriminatory behaviour within the sport in its new Anti-Discrimination Action Plan.

The scheme first took took shape during February's Downing Street summit regarding racism in football, when a Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee review was held in the aftermath of the scandal involving Liverpool striker Luis Suarez and Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

The FA has been a vocal champion of the need to combat racism within the global game, and this latest step demonstrates the aim to eradicate all forms of discrimination.

Chairman David Bernstein explained on the FA's official website: "This is a commitment on behalf of English football to ensure the game is inclusive and free of discrimination. Only by the sum of all our parts working together, will we affect further and greater change.

"This continues to be a top priority for me, as chairman of the Football Association and I believe this action plan states our collective commitment and lays out clearly the individual actions to move forward this vital agenda."

Only winning will silence abuse from Chelsea fans, admits Benitez

By LEE BRYAN PUBLISHED: 10:31 GMT, 21 December 2012 | UPDATED: 12:13 GMT, 21 December 2012

Chelsea manager Rafa Benitez has admitted he does not understand the supporters who still abuse him in the stands and chant the name of former boss Roberto Di Matteo. The Spaniard has been subjected to taunts from the Stamford Bridge crowd since his first game in charge, a 0-0 draw with Manchester City last month. But Benitez, who led Chelsea to a 5-1 win over Leeds in the Capital One Cup in midweek, hopes improved results can silence the doubters.

In the hotseat: Rafa Benitez told Spanish radio he plans to silence the Chelsea doubters

'I have a challenge, that is to win and do well, it’s about time to convince many,' he told Spanish radio station Onda Cero. 'If we can win, convincing will be easier, it says "be quiet", sometimes I do not understand the songs (fans sing against him), I’m focused on the game and do not know what happens in the stands.'Benitez has also brought about an improvement in maligned striker Fernando Torres with his Spanish counterpart scoring six goals in his last five games.

'We are making small adjustments to the tactics and motivation, and Torres is trying to help the team a lot. His main job has to be to attack and be as close as possible to the area.'Former Liverpool manager Benitez also admitted it can be difficult to adapt to England after spending so long in Spain.

I always win - Mancini warns Sir Alex that Manchester City are hungry for more trophies

The City boss has reiterated his own pedigree when it comes to silverware as a player and manager, and insists his expensively-assembled squad are hungry for more success

Roberto Mancini has warned Sir Alex Ferguson that Manchester City are looking to build upon last season's status as Premier League champions.

The Italian has won seven trophies in his last eight seasons in management, including silverware victories at Lazio and Inter Milan.

Three seasons at the Etihad Stadium have yielded an FA Cup triumph and a first league title win since 1968, and Mancini insists his side are far from finished.

"I hope the next three years will be even better," the City boss told reporters.

"I hope so. I think that now in three years we have won and I think we can continue to win in the future.

"For us, it is important to win a trophy every year. If we continue to do it this, it will be good. I think we need to win more. More.

"I always win. I think one season with Lazio we didn't win anything, but our premier target was to take the Champions League place and we got into the Champions League."

Despite this, Mancini admits winning the Premier League title this season will be an even harder challenge than it was last term.

"I think now our target will be to win the second title because to win two titles in a row will be very important," he said.

"It is easy to arrive on top but it will be more difficult to stay there for a long time. This is the big challenge for us.

"United have confidence because they are used to winning for 20 years. Their mentality is stronger than our mentality in this moment.

"But as a team our quality is the same level as theirs in this moment. We showed this in the derby. Although we lost 3-2, we showed we were better in that game."

Sir Alex Ferguson's refusal to use January window could endanger Manchester United's title hopes

The Scottish manager has insisted that he will not strengthen his squad next month despite the reports linking rivals Manchester City with a host of attacking stars

The last time Sir Alex Ferguson seriously dipped his toes in the waters of the January transfer market, he struck gold - twice. That was six years ago. Nemanja Vidic arrived from Spartak Moscow for £7 million and Patrice Evra followed for £5.5m from Monaco. Both have now captained Manchester United.

Since then, his most significant winter purchase has been Anders Lindegaard, for £3m from Aalesund. There has been the occasional, usually unsuccessful, investment in youth - it didn't work out for Zoran Tosic or Manucho. But very, very few of Ferguson's mid-season signings in recent years have played a significant part in the final months of the league campaign. Even Vidic and Evra needed time to adjust - they both appeared only as 83rd minute substitutes in the 2006 League Cup final to win their first silverware with the club.

It was unsurprising, therefore, to hear him express his disinterest in adding to his squad next month in a recent interview with Yahoo. "The January transfer market has never been the best transfer market and that has been proven over the years with very few big transfers happening," he said. "All the big transfers happen in the summer."

It has certainly not stopped him from adding to his collection of Premier League titles. Looking back past Vidic and Evra to the turn of the millennium, Ferguson has since paid up only to acquire Louis Saha and Diego Forlan in January. Saha's form was good but Arsenal's 'Invincibles' ran away with the title anyway, while Forlan did not score a goal until the following season.

Away from the top of the table, Nikica Jelavic scored nine goals in 13 games to help Everton rise to seventh. Pavel Pogrebnyak was good for a goal every other game as Fulham pushed into the top half having finished 2011 in 13th. Gylfi Sigurdsson and Djibril Cisse had no trouble finding the net, either, while the latter's namesake Papiss was sensational for Newcastle.

Ferguson made a signing, too. Paul Scholes did not cost a penny in transfer fees but his influence very nearly proved the difference. Scholes made his first start in the 3-0 victory over Bolton on January 14. That was the beginning of a run of 11 wins out of 12 for United - they paused only to draw away to Chelsea. Scholes played in every single match of that run as the 19-time champions turned a three-point deficit into an eight-point lead at the summit of the top flight.

City, though, had an ace of their own to play. They had one more chance to take the championship when United stuttered against Wigan and Everton; Mancini had made amends with Carlos Tevez just in time for the Argentine to be reunited with Sergio Aguero. Eight goals between them in big wins over West Brom and Norwich put the eventual champions back on the right track.

United are top of the table by six points and have the return of Vidic to full fitness to look forward to, but there is a sense that there is much more to come from City, for whom the likes of Vincent Kompany and Yaya Toure have not yet returned to the consistently excellent form they displayed last season.

Neither has Mancini expressed the same reservations as Ferguson when it comes to spending in January. Why would he? His job is on the line; in the cut-throat world of modern European football, nothing less than the title, you would imagine, will do after City's poor Champions League showing, and the winding down of Pep Guardiola's year-long sabbatical will further tempt Sheikh Mansour to enforce changes if he feels they are necessary.

The doubt over Mario Balotelli's future has only heightened speculation linking City with a new striker. Radamel Falcao has frequently been mentioned, while Stephan El Shaarawy will surely be in demand. Only this week, Spanish daily Mundo Deportivo claimed that Txiki Begiristain, the club's new director of football, had travelled to Brazil in an attempt to persuade Neymar to leave Santos for the Etihad Stadium.

Lamenting a lack of value in the January window is one thing; ruling out any business entirely is another entirely. Ferguson, though, had no hesitation in confirming his plans - or lack of them. "I will not be bringing anybody in in January - definitely not," he has insisted. United are top of the league, but they are set to continue with their deficiencies in defence and midfield unaddressed and that could hand City the initiative in the New Year.

The Sweeper: Premier League champions set for €119m TV windfall

A domestic rights deal will see the table-toppers scoop a huge sum from the start of the 2013-14 season, while Arsenal are not interested in Klaas-Jan Huntelaar

Dec 22, 2012 7:30:00 AM

PREMIER LEAGUE WINNERS WILL GET €119 MILLION WINDFALL NEXT SEASON

The winners of the Premier League next season will receive a staggering €119 million in TV income, according to projected figures compiled by the governing body.

All 20 Premier League clubs are in line for a huge hike in revenues for the three seasons from 2013-14 when the new global and domestic TV rights deals kick in.

A paper circulated to the clubs at the Premier League shareholders meeting last month, details of which have been seen by Goal.com, estimated that sales from the UK rights were €4.03 billion, an increase of 57 per cent from the current figure of €2.58bn.

This will be topped up by revenues from the overseas broadcasters, with the total package worth an incredible €6.29 bn, an increase of 46 per cent from the current €4.38 bn.

Premier League chiefs were told at the meeting on November 15 that, although the sales process had not finished, the estimated figures “were a considered and informed forecast based on sales and expressions of interest to date”.

The 2013-14 title holders will be the first beneficiaries of the bonanza, with the annual distribution to the highest-placed club rising from €79.08m to €119m.

By contrast, the distribution to the bottom club in the league next season will rise from €52.11m to €75.90m.

The figures have still to be scrutinised by the Premier League audit and remuneration committee, but they are expected to be ratified at the shareholders’ meeting in February 2013.

Overseas income is shared out on an equal basis between all 20 clubs, while income from domestic rights is allocated according to a sliding scale based on league position and the number of appearances on TV.

WENGER NOT IN HUNT FOR KLAAS-JAN

Arsenal have been widely linked with a January move for Schalke striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, whose contract expires at the end of the season.

But The Sweeper understands that Arsene Wenger has never regarded the Dutchman as the answer to the club's centre-forward conundrum.

Huntelaar has been offered to Arsenal but the Gunners' manager sees him as too static and similar in style to Olivier Giroud.

Reports in Germany in the last 48 hours have stated that Huntelaar has agreed to sign a new deal with Schalke.

Meanwhile, Arsenal's striker sights next month are set firmly on Spain, with the club eyeing up a number of internationals to fill the void left by the summer departure of Robin van Persie.

EXCLUSIVE: Arsenal chase Barcelona star Villa as Wenger aims to bolster attacking options

By SAMI MOKBEL PUBLISHED: 22:04 GMT, 21 December 2012 | UPDATED: 22:04 GMT, 21 December 2012

Arsenal are exploring an audacious swoop for Barcelona striker David Villa. And Wojciech Szczesny's future as the Gunners' first-choice goalkeeper is growing increasingly uncertain with Sunderland custodian Simon Mignolet the latest to emerge as a January target. But it is the possible capture of Villa that will excite Arsenal fans going into the festive period.

article-0-168BB6F3000005DC-839_468x286.jpg

Wanted: Arsenal could make an audacious swoop for Barcelona striker Villa

Arsene Wenger and his backroom team have discussed a January swoop for Villa, a forward the Gunners boss has admired for several years. The Gunners would rather take the 31-year-old on loan until the end of the season, with a view to a permanent deal depending on how he takes to the Premier League. But if the price is right, Arsenal would stretch to a long term deal in January.

article-0-168D8A1E000005DC-855_468x286.jpg

Keeping the bench warm: Villa has become frustrated with a lack of first-team opportunities at Barcelona

Sources in Spain indicate Barca could let Villa leave should he indicate a preference to depart given his lack of first-team football. Wenger has made bolstering his strikeforce a top priority next month. Klass-Jan Huntelaar, Adrian Lopez and Edin Dzeko all feature on Wenger's list, while Thierry Henry is expected to return for a third spell at the club.

article-0-1669A8AE000005DC-825_468x313.jpg

That's handy: Henry is set for a return to Arsenal in January

Wenger's search for a new goalkeeper to challenge Szczesny has seen him turn to the impressive Mignolet. The Arsenal manager is unhappy with the level of competition Szczesny has at the moment and wants an experienced keeper to push the young Pole and even replace him.Pepe Reina, Asmir Begovic and Michel Vorm are other goalkeeping possibilities.

article-0-1687151C000005DC-620_468x286.jpg

Approach: Arsenal are poised to make a bid for Sunderland stopper Mignolet

Szczesny is unlikely to be happy about the prospect of sitting on the bench should the new arrival push him out of the starting XI. Meanwhile, Crystal Palace starlet Wilfried Zaha is set to decide on a move to either Manchester United or Arsenal next month. The England international has privately set his heart on leaving Selhurst Park in January for a move to an elite top flight club. And it is understood Zaha is weighing up solid offers from Old Trafford and the Emirates Stadium.

EXCLUSIVE: Christmas bash! Everton coach is accused of punching woman keeper at party

By CHARLES SALE PUBLISHED: 22:00 GMT, 21 December 2012 | UPDATED: 10:58 GMT, 22 December 2012

An Everton academy coach has been suspended while Merseyside Police investigate complaints he punched the club's women's team goalkeeper in the face at the staff Christmas party. The shocking incident involving Mick O'Brien, who looks after Everton's nine to 11 year olds, and second-choice keeper Danielle Hill took place around midnight last Sunday outside the Blue Bar on Liverpool's Albert Dock as the function was breaking up. Hill, 24-year-old niece of former England striker Mark Hateley, reported the alleged attack to Merseyside police and went to hospital for a check-up on minor facial injuries.

Claim: It is alleged that O'Brien (left) punched Everton stopper Danielle Hill (right)

Police are making enquiries and Everton are holding an extensive internal investigation. The club have suspended Hill, understudy to Team GB keeper Rachel Brown, along with former Torquay midfielder O'Brien, 33, while the two probes continue over the Christmas period. There are understood to be conflicting reports as to who threw the first punch in a fight that is the talk of a club viewing the clash with the utmost seriousness.

article-2251895-169DE666000005DC-895_468x406.jpg

Probe: Hill and O'Brien have both been suspended by Everton

But whatever the outcome of the inquiries, the fracas is another unseemly chapter in the history of wild behaviour at football clubs' Christmas parties. The Everton bash was attended by administrative staff, academy and community coaches as well as the women's team. Neither manager David Moyes nor his first-team squad were present.

A police statement said: 'Merseyside Police can confirm an investigation is underway following the assault of a 24-year-old woman in Liverpool city centre on Sunday, December 16. 'The incident occurred near to the entrance of the Blue Bar in the Albert Dock at about midnight. The 24-year-old was punched in the face during the incident.

An investigation into the full circumstances of the incident is ongoing.' Everton made no comment.

Arsenal must win or sponsorship will be cut, warns backer Emirates

The airline company revealed the new contract starting from 2015 means the Gunners will receive less money if they fail to perform on the pitch or qualify for the Champions League

Dec 23, 2012 11:35:00 AM
By Tom J Doyle

214067hp2.jpg

Arsenal are at risk of losing millions of pounds in sponsorship money from main backers Emirates if they fail to qualify for the Champions League in future seasons.

The Gunners receive £30 million a year from the airline company, but Emirates' senior vice-president, Boutros Boutros, has revealed that the club will be paid less money if they fail to perform on the pitch.

And although Arsenal currently sit in third position in the Premier League after beating Wigan 1-0 on Saturday, the news will worry fans as the side are currently fighting with the likes of Chelsea, Everton, Tottenhan and West Brom for a spot in the top four.

"There are certain clauses, from 2015, that we pay them a percentage less if they don't perform," said Boutros Boutros.

"The Champions League is part of the new contract. It's just to keep them on their toes. It's fair to us and fair to them."

The airline sponsor Arsenal's shirts and stadium, but are wary of receiving less exposure if Arsene Wenger's side fail to reach the Champions League and miss out on the media exposure the tournament brings.

The French manager has led the Gunners into Europe's top club competition in every single year of his reign in north London, but he is currently experiencing his worst start to a season at Arsenal with 30 points from 18 games, including four defeats.

The club are also without a trophy for seven years, but Emirates have negotiated a contract extension for another five years from the 2014-15 season, and the company believe the club are still a good investment.

Boutros continued: "Arsenal is an incredibly strong brand, well managed, with a great coach."

The Newcastle hitman has a £7million release clause that several Barclays Premier League clubs are tempted to activate next month.Along with Arsenal and Liverpool, QPR boss Harry Redknapp has targeted Ba in the hope he can provide the goals to secure top-flight survival, but all three could be beaten to the striker by mega-rich PSG.

‘I look at PSG as a fan, as a supporter,’ Ba said.‘I have never concealed my attraction to the club as a fan, which I have been since I was little.’As Arsenal stall, the 27-year old has most recently been linked with both Spurs, while Newcastle’s interest in Marseille’s Loic Remy still remains.

In trouble: Mario Balotelli's (left) brother Enoch Barwuah (right) was arrested in Italy for assaulting two police officers

Manchester City star Mario Balotelli’s brother appeared in an Italian court on Christmas Eve accused of assaulting two policemen. Enoch Barwuah, 20, who had trials with Stoke City and Sunderland before signing for Salford City last month, was held after a brawl at a bar and kept in custody until his appearance before a judge. The court heard how he had been attacked as he drank in a bar in Brescia with his sister Abigail by a man who ripped his shirt but Barwuah then turned on the police, who had been called by the owner of the bar.

Officers said they found Barwuah in the street, shirtless and barefooted and when they approached they were kicked and punched. They also reported that their squad car was damaged in the incident.
The court bailed Barwuah to his home address in Brescia until January 3, when he will have a fast-track trial, accused of assault and resisting arrest.

At his hearing, Barwuah apologised and admitted that his reactions had been ‘unjustified’ but claimed that he had become concerned when his sister ‘felt ill’ during the attack. Barwuah is the younger brother of Balotelli, who also has a sister called Angel. The three other siblings remained with their natural parents when Balotelli was adopted as a baby by a wealthy Italian couple.
