Extra Time: Manchester United players wear Bugs Bunny pyjamas ahead of Qatar break

What's up, Doc? | Anderson & Patrice Evra pose in Bugs Bunny pyjamas

Anderson bounces around like Bugs Bunny playing basketball as his fellow stars sport matching pairs of Space Jam-themed pyjamas on Manchester United’s long-haul flight on Sunday for much-needed warm-weather training in the sunny Middle East.

Landing on Monday morning renowned merkster Rio Ferdinand tweeted: "Just landed in Qatar....zero sleep on the plane!! Eyes feeling puffy!! *sunglasses where r u*!! 'This Sun better not try and play hide + seek with me, we haven't got long here so let's be having ya!!"

That's all folks! | Paul Scholes & Ryan Giggs keep their eveningwear simple

Elder statesmen Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes look more inclined to a quiet night. Perhaps they spent the 7-hour flight dreaming of facing extra-terrestrials such as Lionel Messi and his fellow Barcelona MonStars.

That sounds like more of a nightmare, although the pair of Fergie’s Fledglings would have been up there for the Premier League Dream Team called up for the climactic battle.

Trendsetters | Nick Powell & Anderson relax on their flight to Qatar

Nick Powell looks more interested in his laptop – he would have been just two-years-old when the Disney met NBA legend Michael Jordan in the classic movie.

Anderson, however, is there to tell him of what kids these days are dreaming as he waits for the chance to impart his characteristic energy on the pitch when his side touch down in the sun.

Extra Time: What a balls up! Manchester United investigating training ground theft

Local thieves are believed to have made off with several Nike Maxim balls worth a total of €3,500 when they were laid out prior to the Red Devils' training session

Jan 23, 2013 12:15:00 PM
By Matt Scott

242557hp2.jpg

Manchester United have have launched an investigation after €3,500 worth of footballs were stolen from the club's Carrington training ground.

The theft is believed to have occurred after training ground staff laid the Nike Maxim balls out before the Premier League table-toppers' practice, with thieves sneaking onto the complex and making away with the merchandise.

Robin van Persie, Wayne Rooney et al strolled out for training, only to find that the biggest tool of the trade was nowhere to be seen - we dread to think how dull the emergency fitness session was while extra balls were sourced!

The Trafford Training Centre sits within 108 acres of land, with 1.5 miles of fencing and trees surrounding the complex in order to keep sneaky photographers, journalists and thieves out.

While the culprits are yet to be identified, the balls are reportedly being sold locally to those wanting to own an odd piece of united memorabilia.

Greater Manchester Police are not believed to have received a complaint about the incident.

Bird's eye view: Roman Abramovich had set his sights on the Earls Court Exhibition Centre

'Neither of the two landowners believes that the inclusion of a football stadium in the scheme would offer the regeneration benefits of the existing master plan,' the press release read. 'It is the firm intention of the two landowners to proceed with this landmark regeneration, creating 9,500 permanent new jobs and around 36,000 temporary construction jobs.Plans for the redevelopment of the Earls Court site have been unveiled after an agreement paving the way for £1billion worth of community benefits in North Fulham and Earls Court was signed - with Chelsea not part of that.

Blow: Abramovich will be forced to reconsider his plans after another setback

Hammersmith and Fulham Council Leader Nicholas Botterill added: 'There really is no place for Chelsea Football Club within the Earls Court redevelopment. 'It remains the council's firm belief that the future of Chelsea FC is best served at their historic home of Stamford Bridge.' Despite the obvious setback, Sportsmail understands Chelsea will continue to monitor the site as an option as they are aware that similar language has been used before. Nevertheless today's statement will still come as a huge blow to Abramovich, who continues to look for a new home for his side who have been based at Stamford Bridge since 1905.

EXCLUSIVE: United finally land £15m Zaha as Young is sidelined for BOTH Real Madrid games with knee injury

By SAMI MOKBEL PUBLISHED: 23:41 GMT, 23 January 2013 | UPDATED: 00:06 GMT, 24 January 2013

Manchester United have clinched a £15million deal for Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha... as it emerged Ashley Young will miss their Champions League double-header against Real Madrid with a knee problem. Young limped off in the 2-1 win over Liverpool on January 13 after a collision with Daniel Agger - and Sportsmail understands the winger has damaged his left medial ligament so will miss at least another four weeks. United manager Sir Alex Ferguson hoped to include Young in his squad to face Tottenham last weekend but the winger was ruled out after medical tests.

article-2266518-1709C94E000005DC-842_634x310.jpg

Incoming: Wilfried Zaha will move to Manchester United but remain at Crystal Palace until the summer

article-2266518-170DEF03000005DC-931_634x347.jpg

Cat that got the cream: Sir Alex Ferguson has beaten many of his rivals to the signing

Young's club and England team-mate Wayne Rooney also gave United cause for some concern when he pulled up during training in the Middle East on Wednesday. Rooney recently missed three weeks with a knee problem and only returned to action in the FA Cup replay victory over West Ham a week ago. On Wednesday he was seen grimacing and holding his left thigh and it remains to be seen if the striker is in contention for this weekend's FA Cup fourth round clash with Fulham at Old Trafford.

Young's prolonged stint on the sidelines will come as a major blow to United as they enter a crucial part of their season. The midfielder will definitely miss both legs of the Champions League second round clash against Jose Mourinho's Spanish giants Real. Young is also likely to be absent for the domestic fixtures against Fulham, Southampton, Everton, QPR, Norwich, West Ham and Reading.

He will be unavailable for England's friendly against Brazil, but should be fit for the crucial March World Cup qualifying double header with San Marino and Montenegro. In better news for Barclays Premier League leaders United, the protracted deal for Palace starlet Zaha has finally been agreed. United will pay £10million up front - the biggest down payment for a Championship player, exceeding the £6m Arsenal initially paid Southampton for 17-year-old Theo Walcott on in 2006.

article-0-1716B67E000005DC-368_634x566.jpg

Blow: Ashley Young has been ruled out for one month meaning he will miss the games against Real Madrid

The remaining £5m will be made up of various add-ons, £3m based on appearances, and the remaining £2m based on trophies and England appearances. Palace have also agreed a 10 per cent sell-on fee. Zaha will sign a five-and-a-half year contract at Old Trafford which will start at £35,000 a week, rising as he develops at the club. The England international will have a medical for United within the next 48 hours and will be loaned back to Palace for the remainder of the season - a key boost to Palace boss Ian Holloway as he strives to win promotion to the Premier League.

Manchester City close in on Arsenal and Chelsea after entering football's top 10 earners but Real Madrid STILL on top

By LAURIE WHITWELL PUBLISHED: 00:33 GMT, 24 January 2013 | UPDATED: 00:37 GMT, 24 January 2013

Deloitte's football money league

1 Real Madrid - £414.7m (revenue 2011-12)
2 Barcelona - £390.8m
3 Manchester United - £320.3m
4 Bayern Munich - £298.1m
5 Chelsea - £261m
6 Arsenal - £234.9m
7 Manchester City - £231.1m
8 AC Milan - £207.9m
9 Liverpool - £188.7m
10 Juventus - £158.1m
11 Borussia Dortmund - £153m
12 Inter - £150.4m
13 Tottenham - £144.2m
14 Schalke - £141.2m
15 Napoli - £120.1m
16 Marseille - £109.8m
17 Lyon - £106.7m
18 Hamburg - £98m
19 Roma - £93.8m
20 Newcastle - £93.3m

Manchester City are poised to overtake London powerhouses Arsenal and Chelsea to become the Barclays Premier League’s second-best club at making money. The reigning champions have surpassed the annual revenues of Tottenham and Liverpool by winning the title, and should move behind only neighbours United in the next two years if they maintain similar success.

City jump five places to seventh in Deloitte’s latest Football Money League table, published today, which ranks the world’s top 20 teams based on cash generated each year. They made £231.1million in 2011-12, up a remarkable £77.9m (51 per cent) from the previous season to closely trail Arsenal’s £234.9m and Chelsea’s £261m – revenue bolstered by winning the Champions League.

There is welcome news too for Newcastle, who make the list for the first time in three years after finishing fifth in the League. An increase of £7.1m in broadcast revenue combined with average attendances of 50,280 saw them bring in £93.3m to dislodge La Liga’s Valencia in 20th.

article-0-16AAC0A0000005DC-761_634x449.jpg

On the up: Manchester City's Premier League victory saw the club rise to seventh in Deloitte's latest Football Money Table

Indeed, Deloitte predict that such moves should become the norm, with the Football Money League soon dominated by English clubs because of the mammoth new deal for domestic broadcast rights. As many as half the 20 places seem set to be occupied by Premier League sides once the £3billion contract, potentially worth an extra £30m-a-season per club, kicks in at the start of 2013-14.
Everton, Aston Villa, Fulham and Sunderland are currently ranked 26th to 29th with revenues of between £80.5m to £78m respectively.

article-0-171F780B000005DC-523_634x417.jpg

Top dogs: Real Madrid sit at the summit of Deloitte's Football Money League

The top four is the same as last year, with Real Madrid leading the way on £414.7m, Barcelona second on £390.8m, and United third on £320.3m, which is £11.3m down on 2010-11 due to an early exit from the Champions League and the weakening of the pound against the euro. Bayern are fourth on £298.1m. But it is City’s rise which is most noticeable, and shows why Arsene Wenger must do everything he can to ensure Arsenal qualify for the Champions League. Making Europe’s elite competition was worth an extra £30m to City, who also benefited from the start of their huge £35m-a-year sponsorship with Etihad Airways.

article-0-16AA641E000005DC-315_634x345.jpg

Timely boost: Chelsea's coffers were improved by their Champions League win

Adam Bull, senior consultant at Deloitte Sports, told Sportsmail: ‘For City, winning the Premier League and playing in the Champions League football had an effect over Tottenham and Liverpool. It was a big moment for them. ‘They are already pretty close to Arsenal and as you’ve seen in this edition Chelsea’s revenue has gone up through winning the Champions League. The on-pitch performance between these three teams domestically and in Europe will count for a lot.’ Arsenal’s matchday revenue far outstrips City’s because of ticket prices and stadium capacity but failure to reach Europe’s top table this season will tell in future years.

article-0-16EA12FB000005DC-440_634x430.jpg

Look out behind you: Manchester City are on the brink of leapfrogging Arsenal

‘Not only do you not get the central distributions from UEFA, you also don’t get the matchday income from the extra high quality games,’ Bull said. ‘A lot of the commercial deals the clubs do will have a trigger in them that they will get a certain amount if they are competing in the Champions League.’ He continued: ‘City also continue to go from strength to strength commercially. There is the big Etihad deal but then attracting Nike to do the kit from 2013/14 is an indication they are very strong.’

Sir Alex Ferguson: The FA is picking on me

The Red Devils' manager believes the FA will charge him for his outburst towards Simon Beck, the assistant referee he believes had a 'bad game' when United drew against Spurs

Jan 26, 2013 8:35:00 AM
By Matt Davis

242632hp2.jpg

Sir Alex Ferguson has refused to brush off claims that he will not be charged by the Football Association for his outburst directed at match official Simon Beck, telling reporters: “I wouldn’t bet on it.”

With Manchester United leading 1-0 in their Premier League game against Tottenham on 20 January, Wayne Rooney went down in the penalty area after appearing to be fouled by Spurs defender Steven Caulker, prompting Sir Alex to criticise the official's performance in his post-match observations.

The FA subsequently invited the United manager to explain his comments, which he did, and the governing body must now decide by Tuesday evening whether or not to charge the 71-year-old Scot.

However, Sir Alex himself believes that a potential charge is personal.

He told reporters: “I just think it is more about me than what I’ve said. Whether I think it is unfair or not doesn’t matter to them really at this point.

“That is what I have put in my letter exactly. But you know the FA.

“You never know. It is one of these things. We are high profile.”

The Manchester United manager suggested that the media had a huge part to play in the charges, with fellow Premier League managers Roberto Mancini and Harry Redknapp only being given warnings earlier in the season for similar offences.

He added: “I think that is what you will find [the media's reaction]. That is why they have sent me a letter.”

Extra Time: Zaha shows up for Manchester United medical in Imogen Thomas t-shirt

The Crystal Palace winger has agreed a switch to the Premier League leaders but donned a somewhat inflammatory top for his check-up, given the glamour model's history at the club

Jan 25, 2013 2:30:00 PM
By Joe Doyle

249531hp2.jpg

Manchester United's latest recruit, Wilfried Zaha, showed an almost unparalleled lack of self-awareness by turning up to his medical for the club donning a t-shirt with the image of Imogen Thomas on the front.

The glamour model is, of course, the woman with whom United legend Ryan Giggs had an affair, and for which saw a subsequent but ultimately futile super-injuction taken out.

The Premier League leaders agreed a £17 million deal for the Crystal Palace winger, as exclusively revealed by Goal.com, but he will spend the rest of the season on loan at the Championship club.

Extra Time would like to believe that the whole thing is just a sorry misunderstanding and that Wilf just chose the snazzy ensemble as a matter of coincidence. And that Giggsy hasn't seen it.

Either way, it is some way to mark your first day with a new club.

Mancini claims Manchester City don't have enough players

The Italian concedes that it will be difficult for him to add to his squad during the closing days of the January transfer window but insists he will not sell any players

Jan 26, 2013 10:05:00 AM
By Matt Scott

249045hp2.jpg

Roberto Mancini claims Manchester City do not have enough players and admits it will be "difficult" to add to his squad during the January transfer window.

So far this month, City have failed to add to their squad ahead of their Premier League title run-in with Manchester United, while Mario Balotelli is on the verge of a return to Italy.

When asked whether he will sign players this month, Mancini replied: "I don't know but we don't have enough players. It is difficult [to bring any in]. We are 18 players now. We can't sell any players."

Goal.com revealed that Balotelli has given notice on his Cheshire home as he prepares for a move back to AC Milan, although Mancini wants the striker to stay and earn his place at City.

"Mario should work well and try to get his place in the team because at the moment he doesn't play – for many reasons," Mancini said.

"I hope he can help us to win some trophies because he has the quality. I think today his performance is so-so but at the same time he can improve because in next four months we have important and crucial games."

Mancini dismissed claims that he could be tempted into fielding a weakened team against Stoke City in the FA Cup on Saturday, a match that sees a repeat of the 2011 final that City won.

"In Italy we used to do this," he added. "In England the FA Cup is more important. I understand some teams think about staying in Premier League.

"I will always play my strongest team. When you play on a Saturday it is okay. It is difficult to win one trophy, to win a Double is hard but we will try.

"Stoke at home is a different team. Very difficult for every team they meet but if we play football we can have a chance to win.

"It is not only for us. Every team that goes to the Britannia has a problem because Stoke at home is strong – play well, physical, set pieces. But the last two years we played well and had a lot of chances to win and were really unlucky.

"The pitch is smaller than the Etihad Stadium and probably they have a different approach to the game. There are sometimes some squads that play very strong at home and away are different. Stoke are like this."
