Government report calls for English football reforms
The Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee declares that the Football Association must do more to encourage "financial transparency" amongst clubs or risk facing legislation
Jan 29, 2013 12:36:00 PM
By David Lynch
The UK government has threatened to legislate against English football should reforms suggested by the Commons Culture, Media and Sport Committee be ignored.
The recent findings call for the Football Association to do more to encourage diversity and ensure that English clubs are financially sound.
And sports minister Hugh Robertson MP insists that the guidlines must be followed, telling BBC Sport: "We welcome the report.
"The report from the House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport committee shows the will there is across Parliament for football to modernise and change for the better.
"We have been clear that we want the football authorities to carry out the reforms they promised by the start of the 2013-14 season - most notably around improved governance and diverse representation at the FA, the development of a licensing system and greater financial transparency.
"If football does not deliver then we will look at bringing forward legislation."
"We want the authorities to carry out the reforms they promised ... improved governance and diverse representation at the FA, a licensing system and financial transparency"
- Hugh Robertson MP, sports minister
The FA, Premier League and Football League have since responded in a join statement which claims that the recommendations are already being acted upon.
"Significant headway has already been made on many of these proposed reforms, not least on sustainability and transparency," it read.
"The remaining reform proposals are the subject of consultation within the game and we are confident that the necessary progress will be made."
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson charged by FA for criticising assistant referee
The 71-year-old has been reprimanded for his comments following the Premier League leaders' draw against Tottenham at White Hart Lane, suggesting the linesman was biased
Jan 29, 2013 5:02:00 PM
By Joe Doyle
Sir Alex Ferguson has been charged by the FA for criticising the performance of assistant referee Simon Beck following Manchester United's 1-1 draw against Tottenham.
An FA statement reads: "The FA has today [Tuesday 29 January] charged Sir Alex Ferguson in relation to post-match media comments made following Manchester United’s game at Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday 20 January 2013.
"It is alleged the Manchester United manager breached FA Rule E3 in that he implied that the match official was motivated by bias.
"Ferguson has until 4pm on Friday 1 February 2013 to respond to the charge."
Following Beck's performance that day, Sir Alex stated: "I think we should have had a throw-in down our side of the pitch but that linesman never gave us a thing all day.
"For me, it was a poor performance by him. He never saw the penalty kick for Wayne Rooney and some other decisions too.
"We remember him well from his time at the Chelsea game [in 2010] when Didier Drogba was three yards offside and he gave onside. I think he had a shocking game today and I'm disappointed in his performance, I really am.
"I think he has had a bad game and we never got anything from that side of the pitch. We got a bad break."
On his charge, Sir Alex recently stated that he believed the FA to be taking him to task unfairly, and that it had more to do with him than the comments he made.
He stated: "I just think it is more about me than what I've said. Whether I think it is unfair or not doesn't matter to them really at this point.
"That is what I have put in my letter exactly but you know the FA. You never know. It is one of these things. We are high-profile."
Arsenal announce ticket price freeze for 2013-14 season
The north London outfit have opted against increasing the amount - with the club’s own supporters as well as away teams including Manchester City’s angry at the current costs
Jan 29, 2013 7:49:00 PM
By Shane Farrington
Arsenal have announced they will be freezing ticket prices for home games for the 2013/14 season.
The club have been criticised by their own supporters for the cost of a ticket to watch them play - including last November, when a group of fans wrote to the club to vent their frustrations.
Fans of teams travelling to the Emirates Stadium have also been left unhappy - with almost a third of tickets being returned by Manchester City for their clash on 13 January after their supporters opted against paying the cost, and Arsenal have now decided to freeze the ticket prices.
A statement from the club said: "Arsenal Football Club has announced it will not be making any ticket price increases next season.
"The move follows a full review by the Arsenal board which included an assessment of the current economic environment and feedback from fans' groups.
"The price freeze means Arsenal will have made only two across the board inflation-linked price increases in the eight years since it has been at Emirates Stadium.
"This season the club introduced new pricing categories which created 90,000 cheaper tickets at £25 as part of its drive to provide more tickets at affordable prices. In addition it continued the policy of offering prices at £10 for adults and £5 for children for home Capital One Cup ties.
"The price freeze applies to all match ticket prices including season tickets in both General Admission and Club Level. Club Level season ticket renewals will begin on February 12."

Seven Manchester United fans handed three-year bans after clashes with Ajax supporters
After trouble broke out ahead of a Europa League match at Old Trafford last February, a judge has barred individuals ranging from 26-42 years of age from all football grounds
Jan 31, 2013 4:50:00 PM
By Dale Jones
Seven Manchester United fans have been banned from football grounds for three years following clashes with Ajax supporters last season.
The violence erupted outside The Binary bar in Manchester city centre prior to a Europa League match last February, before police were called to the Castlefield hostelry where fireworks had been set off - leading to 15 arrests.
Seven have now been handed three-year banning orders after a judge was handed police evidence which showed the group involved in previous misdemeanours at other matches.
PC Ashley Keyte from Greater Manchester Police's Force Events Section said: "We do not consider these men to be football fans as to do so would be a slur on the vast majority of decent supporters who go to games and behave impeccably week-in week-out.
"Football related violence has no part in modern society, yet some mindless individuals still think it's acceptable to brawl with others for no other reason than their allegiance to another team.
"We work hard with football clubs across Greater Manchester to ensure that those who are convicted are banned from not only the ground of the team they support, but every single stadium in the UK.
West Brom fury at Odemwingie dash to QPR as striker sees move collapse
By MATT BARLOW PUBLISHED: 18:05 GMT, 31 January 2013 | UPDATED: 08:10 GMT, 1 February 2013
Albion seething after Odemwingie bids to force move
Striker left in QPR car park after being blocked from talks
He says: 'I'm happy with the trust Harry Redknapp has in me'
Redknapp: 'He must have got his wires crossed'
Premier League could investigate 'tapping up' player
Can the Nigeria forward ever play for West Brom again?
Peter Odemwingie faces a West Bromwich Albion backlash after his shambolic attempt to leave for Queens Park Rangers collapsed on Thursday night. The striker said goodbye to team-mates at The Hawthorns and drove to London in the belief his move would be resolved as the deadline loomed.
Hopes dashed: Peter Odemwingie failed to secure a move to QPR despite driving to London
At Loftus Road, the 31-year-old striker said: 'It's fine. West Brom was my home but this is a new chapter. I love West Brom and always will.'I am optimistic. A few good players have arrived here and I am happy with the trust Harry Redknapp has in me.
'The last few results have given us a chance to stay up. I don’t think the owners will bring in so many players if they don't think it will happen. I hope West Brom are happy with what they will get and they hope to get players.'
But furious Albion quickly made it clear there was no agreement between the clubs. Chairman Jeremy Peace said: ‘Peter has acted wholly unprofessionally. He must now accept the fact he remains under contract for a further 18 months.'
In a statement, QPR said: 'The club can confirm they have held further discussions with QPR but those talks have so far proved fruitless and no agreement has been reached.
Busy day: Harry Redknapp bolstered his squad in other areas, while Steve Clarke had to pick up the pieces
'Albion would also like to make clear that Peter has not been given permission to speak to QPR about a potential move.' Once the lawyers became involved, Rangers decided they could not let Odemwingie into the building and he spun his Range Rover around and drove off.
QPR manager Harry Redknapp. 'I think he probably felt that the deal had been agreed between the clubs and it hadn't and it was all a mix-up really.'I feel sorry for the lad and the way the whole thing's turned out. It wasn't any of our doing. I think he was maybe advised that he should turn up here and that the club had made an offer and the offer had been accepted. The wires got crossed somewhere.'The clubs were thought to have agreed a fee of £3million plus Junior Hoilett but the Canada forward refused to move.
‘Odemwingie should have behaved better,’ said Sportsmail’s Martin Keown on BBC Radio 5 Live. ‘He’s a good player but can be replaced by West Brom. It’s clear the move is all about the money.’ QPR were ready to treble the 31-year-old’s £15,000-a-week wages but had to back off.
Man mountain: QPR broke their transfer record to have Chris Samba shore up a leaky defence
Reunited: Jermaine Jenas joined Harry Redknapp again on a busy day transfer deadline day for QPR
Loan deal: Redknapp brought in Spurs winger Andros Townsend
Peace added: ‘This has brought a conclusion to what has been an unsavoury affair. The only way we would have considered letting Peter leave was if an acceptable offer was forthcoming and if we had found a suitable replacement. ‘Neither materialised and, in the end, the matter became a point of principle as much as anything.’
Odemwingie, who tweeted this month about his desire to leave, became an online joke among fellow professionals last night. Arsenal midfielder Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain tweeted: ‘Does Odemwingie need a place to stay tonight’. Within two hours it had been retweeted more than 16,700 times.
It will be less amusing when he returns to training at West Bromwich and could be positively hostile if he is involved in Sunday’s game at home to Tottenham. The fiasco typified another crazy day of activity for Redknapp, who smashed the club transfer record to sign Christopher Samba from Anzhi Makhachlaka for £12.5m. Samba signed a contract which ties him to Rangers until 2017.
Redknapp also clinched deals for two of his former Tottenham players. Jermaine Jenas signed an 18-month deal and Andros Townsend moved on loan until the end of the season. A move for David Bentley collapsed, as did a bid to lure Stoke’s Peter Crouch, but a centre half was the priority and Redknapp said: ‘Chris is just what we need. He’s a monster.’
Beckham to play for FREE at PSG as England legend reveals that he will donate £170,000-a-week salary to children's charity
By NEIL ASHTON PUBLISHED: 08:51 GMT, 31 January 2013 | UPDATED: 07:22 GMT, 1 February 2013
David Beckham has stunned world football by donating his entire £3.4million salary at Paris St Germain to a children’s charity. The former England captain, who has signed a contract with the French league leaders until the end of the season, insisted on playing for nothing.Instead PSG owners Qatari Investment Authority will hand over his £170,000 a week salary to a Paris charity.
Getting shirty: Beckham poses with PSG Qatari president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and sports director Leonardo
BARTON WELCOMES BECKS
He'll be great for French Football. Although, he'll remain 2nd best/best looking, Englishman in France. That'll hurt his confidence!
Although the announcement inevitably attracted some scepticism, Beckham’s global appeal and huge endorsements mean he continues to pull in big money from other sources.Beckham, 37, said: ‘Throughout this time I won’t receive a salary. We’ve decided my salary will go to a local children’s charity in Paris and that’s one of the things we are very excited and proud to do. ‘I’m not sure it’s something that’s been done before, but I’m passionate about children and charity. The owners will decide which charity, we haven’t decided which one yet.’
Beckham’s contract may be extended for another season if he is a success in Paris. He is close to PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and it is thought the Qatari may ultimately fund a Beckham franchise team in America’s Major League Soccer.Reaction to the charity gift from within football was mixed, with former England striker Stan Collymore tweeting: ‘at least we know who’ll be the UK spokesman for Qatar Tourism/ WC22#nosuchthingasafreelunch.’But Fabrice Muamba tweeted: ‘Giving his salary away to charity, you got to love Beckham for doing that.’
All shapes and sizes: Beckham has had shirts printed for his children
On his Facebook page Beckham posted: 'Glad to get so many positive comments about the donation. Victoria and I made the decision to give the wages away to a children's charity. 'We are incredibly fortunate so we are glad we could do this with the club's blessing. Thanks as always for your support, I will always do my best for you.'He later added: 'I've got all the shirts for the kids, you can see little Harper's one here. Blown away by the reception of the people in Paris.'
Beckham's first game in France will have an added twist as his first game will be against another Englishman, as he faces Joey Barton's Marseilles on February 24th.Speculation about Becks' next move with clubs around the world vying for the signature of the 37-year-old superstar midfielder. Beckham - who will wear the No 32 shirt - had been a free agent having left LA Galaxy in November and was training with Arsenal in a bid to keep up his fitness, has now put pen to paper with the French league leaders.
Allez! The world's press convened for Beckham's press conference, announcing he'd joined PSG
Beckham was also asked if he had been practising his language skills but conceded that his grasp of the French language stretched as far as one word. He said: 'My French? I haven't spoken it for quite a few years, since I was at school so I'm definitely going to have to brush up on it. 'I am excited. It is something that we've been working on and talking about for quite a while and now it has finally happened. 'My wife and children will be staying in London because the kids are at school there. We are all very excited as a family.'
Bestseller: Beckham's shirt went on sale at the Parc des Princes within hours of the deal being confirmed
Happy snapper: A fan takes a picture of the new Beckham shirt
Jetting in: Beckham flew from London to Paris on Thursday morning to complete his move to PSG
On the offers from other clubs, he said: 'I was very lucky. I am 37 and I was made a lot of offers - more than I have ever had in my career. 'I am very honoured. I chose Paris because I can see what the club are trying to do. I can see the players they are trying to bring in. 'It is an exciting city, it always has been. But now they have a club that will have a lot of success for the next 10, 15, 20 years. I'm not saying i will be playing then, but for now to be part of something that is growing is exiting.
'I am very honoured to have been picked to be part of the club. I am very excited. Why PSG? Every club I have played for throughout my career I have been successful with. He added: 'I always said I would never want to play for another English club. I have history with Manchester United. I have always supported them, I always dreamed of playing for them. I am very honoured by the offers I had in England, but I wouldn't have played there if it wasn't for United.
Reunion: Beckham passed his medical and will team up with former boss Carlo Ancelotti in the French capital
'I have a lot of experience in the game; 37 years old; over 13 or 14 championships, trophies throughout my career. And while Beckham insisted PSG getting through the Champions League group stages was not the deciding factor in his choice, it offers him a chance to play at the highest level in club football again. 'It's a bonus that they're in the Champions League,' he said. 'I haven't played Champions League football for quite a few years. 'To be at a club that's in the Champions League is exciting for me. I've been lucky to win the Champions League once and know how important it is to the club. 'I'd have come if they weren't in the Champions League but I'm excited that they are.
'I have played for some of the biggest clubs in the world, and I am still being successful at 37, and I'm still fit. I can still run around and I can still play as i did when I was 21. I haven't lost my pace because I never really had it. And he saved special praise for his new boss, Carlo Ancelotti, he said: 'I am very lucky to have worked with Carlo Ancelotti for quite a few months (at AC Milan). 'I said at the time, Carlo is one of the best I have played for. It is exciting on a number of levels.'
Rushing around: Beckham began his journey to Paris from London on Thursday morning
PSG President Club Nasser Al-Khelaif, presenting Beckham, added: 'David refused offers from a lot of clubs to be here. 'He's going to be with us at our project trying to reach our big dream to become one of the best clubs in Europe. 'David is a very professional player outside of the pitch. I'm sure he will be an asset to the club. I'm sure we'll win lots of things with David and I'm very happy to sit next to David here. 'This is a big day. We've been after him for a long time and finally we did it.'
Clubs in China, America and even England had all explored the possibility of signing Beckham though Arsenal, despite him training with them, were not among them.PSG's next fixture, incidentally, is in the league away to Toulouse tomorrow evening and Beckham's title-winning experience in England and Spain can only help them beat Lyon to the championship.
En route to Paris: Today's could be the final transfer of Beckham's career
Star turns: Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Javier Pastore are already among PSG's illustrious squad members
His transfer also represents another opportunity for him to win the Champions League, where Valencia are their last 16 opponents.Speaking last week, Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said: ‘He is fantastic and that’s one of the reasons I take him here. 'He is here early in the morning and the young English players always look at him and take his advice on board.
Superb professional: Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger was impressed with Beckham's 'fantastic' influence
‘He told me he has not done anything since he stopped at LA Galaxy. I don’t believe that. I was surprised. But maybe he wanted to get a bit away from it. He is 37 as well, you know. ‘Beckham is super-ambitious. If in his mind he wanted to play in the Premier League he would not have gone on holiday, he would have prepared and come in and tried to impress me.
Reunited: Beckham and Ancelotti, who worked together in 2009 at AC Milan
"HE'S NOT FOR US"
'I know that he's leaving the Los Angeles Galaxy but we are not interested.' – PSG manager Carlo Ancelotti in December
‘He has told me he has done nothing at all. He told me that he doesn’t look at all to be in shape. But he wants to get fit again. 'He is a sportsman and maybe in June he has plans to play somewhere, maybe take three or four months off and prepare for next season.’Beckham is to join another Englishman in Ligue 1. Joey Barton, on loan at Marseille and never reluctant to speak his mind, has already tweeted about his compatriot's arrival.
Incoming: PSG boss Carlo Ancelotti is also interested in recruiting Marek Hamsik (left) and Daniele De Rossi
'Really hope Beckham goes to PSG. Double header against them in French Cup and League back end of Feb at their place,' the controversial midfielder said.'He'll be great for French Football. Although, he'll remain 2nd best/best looking, Englishman in France. That'll hurt his confidence!'Beckham's arrival will also please the PSG forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who in November encouraged the midfielder to resist all other offers and join him in Paris.
Maestros: Beckham will rival Ibrahimovic as PSG's most high-profile player
Leading the way: The big-spending, ambitious PSG are joint-top of Ligue 1 with Lyon
'I am sure there will be many offers for him from clubs all over the world, but it is a very exciting project here in Paris and if he still wants more trophies then this is the right club for him to join,' Ibrahimovic said.'We can win the Champions League over the next two seasons with the team that is being built.'Beckham's potential squad number selection was a subject of interest as his traditionally preferred choices, No 7 and No 23, were already respectively taken by Jeremy Menez and Gregory van der Wiel, hence him taking No 32.
PSG club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi, presenting Beckham, said: 'David refused offers from a lot of clubs to be here.'He's going to be with us at our project trying to reach our big dream to become one of the best clubs in Europe. 'David is a very professional player outside of the pitch. 'I'm sure he will be an asset to the club. I'm sure we'll win lots of things with David and I'm very happy to sit next to David here. 'This is a big day. We've been after him for a long time and finally we did it.'
