EXCLUSIVE: Chelsea fight to bring in Barca striker Villa on loan in bid to help Torres

By MATT BARLOW PUBLISHED: 22:00 GMT, 25 December 2012 | UPDATED: 08:24 GMT, 26 December 2012

Chelsea are preparing to join the dash for Spain and Barcelona striker David Villa as Rafa Benitez seeks firepower to complement Fernando Torres. Having restored the goal instinct of Torres within a month of taking over from Roberto Di Matteo, Benitez is keen to provide more support and cover for his only established centre forward.

article-2253057-168BB6F3000005DC-706_634x384.jpg

Target: Chelsea want Fernando Torres's compatriot David Villa to move from Barcelona on loan

Bayer Leverkusen’s versatile young striker Andre Schurrle remains a serious target but Villa is available, possibly on a loan deal until the end of the season, which means he would not interfere with Chelsea’s long-term pursuit of Radamel Falcao.

Benitez accepts it will be difficult and expensive to prise the Colombia striker Falcao from Atletico Madrid next month but this swoop — or even a move for Newcastle United’s Demba Ba — may be more achievable in the summer.

Villa provides an attractive short-term solution for Chelsea. At 31, Spain’s record goalscorer does not fit their ideal profile for young players with their best years ahead of them but he is fading from favour at the Nou Camp and knows how to dovetail with Torres after their years together at international level.

Villa is understood to earn £110,000 a week, which is near the top of the Stamford Bridge pay structure but not out of reach. He can operate at centre forward if Torres is unavailable or play from wide either side, giving Benitez a valuable option in his quest to rotate his support strikers and keep them fresh.

Arsenal are among other clubs interested in Villa, who has not started a La Liga game for Barcelona since mid-November, but the Champions League will not provide any incentive for the striker because he is already cup-tied in that competition. However, he would be free to play for Chelsea in the Europa League.

Support: Villa could play with Torres or replace him up front if he needs a rest

Daniel Sturridge’s proposed move to Liverpool means that Chelsea must recruit in January. The back-up option is to recall Romelu Lukaku from West Bromwich Albion, although it is widely agreed that the best thing for the teenager’s continued development is to spend the rest of the season at the Hawthorns.

Radar: Demba Ba and Bayer Leverkusen's Andre Schurrle are both other options for Rafa Benitez

Winger Victor Moses played as a centre forward for the last 23 minutes of the 8-0 romp against Aston Villa on Sunday but he has been named in the Nigeria squad for the Africa Cup of Nations. Nigeria have also selected John Mikel Obi and have asked players to report to a training camp in Portugal on Thursday. Eden Hazard featured at centre forward in a disastrous experiment away to Juventus in the Champions League. Chelsea lost 3-0, a defeat which virtually sealed their fate in the competition, and Di Matteo was sacked a few hours later.

Newcastle manager Pardew wants retrospective ban for Ferguson
The FA are currently investigating comments made by Roberto Mancini and Harry Redknapp about referees, and the Magpies boss is after similar action for the Scot

Newcastle United manager Alan Pardew feels his Manchester United counterpart Sir Alex Ferguson should be banned for his remonstrations at the officials on Boxing Day.

Sir Alex was angry at Mike Dean's decision to overrule linesman Jake Collin's offside call and allow Jonny Evan's own goal to stand in the 4-3 win over the Magpies.

The referee chose not to send the Scot to the stands and has left his altercations with the manager out of his post-match report, but Pardew feels the Football Association still should take retrospective action.

He told reporters: "I think Mike Dean might feel slightly disappointed he didn't do something about it.

"I think the pressure that was on him was tough for a referee to take. Sometimes when you reflect on a game you think you might have acted differently. You do that as a manager and I think he might have done that as a referee.
"But it's an emotional game and apparently they had a cordial discussion. I've had a few of those myself and sometimes I've ended up in the stands as a result of that cordial discussion."

Pardew was also aggrieved that the FA missed Robin van Persie's alleged strike to the face of Newcastle defender Fabricio Coloccini.

He added: "I think there were a lot of things the FA could look at. But it seems they are looking at none."

Pardew's comments come in the aftermath of the FA's decision to investigate statements made in post-match interviews by Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini and QPR manager Harry Redknapp in their team's recent losses to Sunderland and West Brom.

Mancini was not happy with referee Kevin Friend as he failed to give a free kick for what he believed was a foul on Pablo Zabaleta in the build-up to Adam Johnson's winner in the 1-0 loss on Boxing Day.

"Maybe the referee ate too much for Christmas," Mancini remarked.

Redknapp, meanwhile, accused the linesman of having poor sight after he felt he missed a handball which could have potentially earned his side a vital point in their 2-1 loss to the Baggies.

Redknapp told reporters: "I asked the linesman how he didn't see that penalty - it was the most blatant handball you could wish to see but he said it was murky down there in that corner and he couldn't make it out.

"Maybe he should go to Specsavers. I thought they were both awful decisions. Scandalous decisions."

Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has slammed Newcastle and Alan Pardew following his side's 4-3 win at Old Trafford on Boxing Day.

The Red Devils eventually came out on top of the clash on December 26, Javier Hernandez's last-minute winner handing them a 4-3 victory after they pegged back to level terms three times beforehand.

The visitors' second, which made the scores 2-1, saw Jonny Evans put the ball in his own net however Ferguson was not happy that referee Mike Dean overruled his linesman's offside call and thus allowed the goal.

Dean's failure to sent the Scot to the stands led to Pardew to criticise the official, commenting he may feel "slightly disappointed" looking back, before calling on the FA to hand the United boss a future ban.

However the 70-year-old has now hit back, and with some force, insisting that his opposite number is in fact the worst for "haranguing" officials, citing his calls for a ban as "unbelievable" after an incident in a match with Tottenham where the Magpies' manager pushed an assistant.

He told reporters: "[Pardew] shoves a ref then makes a joke of it, then he's got the cheek to criticise me. It's unbelievable.

"He is the worst for haranguing referees. His whole staff, every game. He was at it the whole game on Wednesday."

The Red Devils boss then went on to lament his team's high-profile status, suggesting the world is more inclined to take note of spats involving the "most famous club in world" instead of a "wee club in the north east".

"It is unfortunate but I am the manager of the most famous club in the world," he added. "Not Newcastle, a wee club in the north east.

"I was demonstrative. I am always demonstrative. Everyone knows that. I am an emotional guy. But I was not abusive. I shouted Mike over.

"We walked towards each other. I was only on (the pitch) three or four yards. That has been overplayed. The problem for me is that the profile of this club is huge."

Pardew's the worst! Ferguson hits back at criticism for haranguing officials with attack on manager of 'wee club' Newcastle

By CHRIS WHEELER PUBLISHED: 10:11 GMT, 28 December 2012 | UPDATED: 13:19 GMT, 28 December 2012

Sir Alex Ferguson has launched a withering attack on Alan Pardew and Newcastle after the Manchester United manager was criticised for confronting referee Mike Dean during the Boxing Day clash at Old Trafford.Ferguson was furious that Dean overruled his assistant and allowed Jonny Evans’ own-goal to stand because Papiss Cisse, standing in an offside position, was not interfering with play. Pardew criticised Ferguson afterwards but the United boss hit back this morning, accusing his opposite number of hypocrisy after he shoved a linesman in a match with Tottenham in August and branding Newcastle ‘a wee club in the north-east’.

FA demand Mancini and Redknapp explain referee criticismsas Fergie escapes sanction

By BEN RUMSBY, PRESS ASSOCIATION PUBLISHED: 12:06 GMT, 28 December 2012 | UPDATED: 12:06 GMT, 28 December 2012

The FA today confirmed they had written to Roberto Mancini and Harry Redknapp over their criticism of referees following Manchester City and QPR's Boxing Day defeats. The FA sent letters to City boss Mancini and Rangers counterpart Redknapp requesting their observations on their post-match comments in the wake of their sides' respective matches against Sunderland and West Brom. Mancini and Redknapp could both find themselves charged by the FA if their words are found to have amounted to improper conduct.

Redknapp, meanwhile, was furious with what he claimed were two 'scandalous' decisions in QPR's 2-1 home defeat to West Brom.

Boxing legend Michalczewski warns Lewandowski: Moving to United would be a mistake

The former light heavyweight world champion, believes the striker has one of the best coaches in the world in the form of Jurgen Klopp at his current club, and should not leave

Retired Polish boxing world champion Dariusz Michalczewski has advised Robert Lewandowski against swapping Borussia Dortmund for Manchester United.

The striker has been linked with a future move to the Red Devils, either in January or in the coming summer, but the 44-year-old believes the former Lech Poznan man would make a mistake if he left the German team and his mentor Jurgen Klopp.

"In my eyes it would be a mistake in the summer if Robert moves to Manchester United," the former light heavyweight champion told Bild.

"With Dortmund he has a really great club, and probably the best coach in the world! In Manchester, Robert would have the huge competition and would have to prove himself again.

"I'm also not sure that England's Premier League compared to the Bundesliga would really be an improvement!

"He should remain with the good times at Dortmund [for now]. He is very young; he can still go abroad some day."

Extra Time: David Hasselhoff watches Manchester City sink Stoke

The Baywatch and Knight Rider star watched Roberto Mancini's side in action on Tuesday afternoon and even got the chance to mingle with the players after the match

Manchester City hosted yet another Hollywood A-lister as they helped bring in the New Year in style, defeating Stoke City 3-0 at the Etihad Stadium. Yet, as rumours circulated over the presence of a certain David Hasselhoff, it was only after the match finished that we were treated to snaps of the iconic actor mingling with his adopted team.

Donning the sky-blue shirt with 'Hasselhoff' 10' on the back, the 60-year-old, famed for his lead roles in Knight Rider and Baywatch, grabbed the chance to flash his smile alongside the superstars of the Premier League champions.

And, while Hasselhoff showed he had the poise to slot in amongst millionaire footballers, Carlos Tevez took a slightly more infatuated pose as he stared back at the American. In fact, Javi Garcia even went as far as to audition for a reprisal of Baywatch, sidling up to Mitch Buchannon and flashing his Y-fronts.

The series of photos showed Hasselhoff take a particular shine to the Argentines Pablo Zabaleta and Sergio Aguero – with the latter having hobbled off injured in the second half. Nonetheless, he will know that Hasselhoff will be there for him.

Furious Fergie demands Spurs are investigated over swoop for former Manchester United youngster Fryers

By CHRIS WHEELER and ARTHUR SAMUEL PUBLISHED: 19:48 GMT, 4 January 2013 | UPDATED: 10:10 GMT, 5 January 2013

Sir Alex Ferguson has called on the Premier League to block Zeki Fryers’s move to Tottenham, suggesting it was engineered to leave Manchester United up to £3million out of pocket.Ferguson wants an investigation into the ‘trail’ of evidence explaining how the former United defender, 20, joined Spurs for £3m from Standard Liege this week, just over four months after signing a two-year deal with the Belgians.‘I’m disappointed in Tottenham, I really am,’ said the United manager. ‘I think it’s a blatant manipulation of the situation. They tried to buy him at the end of last season and we couldn’t agree terms.

Controversy: Ezekiel Fryers (left) has joined Tottenham for £3million

How did Spurs get their man?

Under Premier League rule v.27, compensation must be paid if a youth player moves clubs.

If a fee cannot be agreed, the professional football compensation committee sets the amount.
Fryers, by signing for Liege, hassidestepped the process.

‘They took him on trial and to Portugal with the Tottenham squad and came back and said they couldn’t afford him. All of a sudden he signs for Standard Liege and when I heard that I expected him to go to Tottenham in January. 'The Premier League should stop the registration until they examine it. There will be a trail, mobile phones (records) or something. It’s obvious to me.’Tottenham hoped to sign Fryers when his United contract ended last summer but refused to meet the £6m demand after the pre-season tour of Portugal.

Previous: Fryers played for Manchester United before leaving for Belgium

The tribunal system and rules over compensation for players under 23 are different in Belgium, so United received less than £1m from Liege. Then, after seven appearances in Belgium, Fryers moved to Spurs on Thursday. It is understood no rules have been broken and United are not believed to have made a formal complaint.A statement on the Belgian club's website read: 'The young defender felt homesick and had difficulty acclimating to life away from home and family. 'So when the London club became interested we understood the situation and were not opposed to the return of the player in England.'
