Being good at football is not an act of provocation
By MARTIN SAMUEL PUBLISHED: 23:57 GMT, 11 December 2012 | UPDATED: 10:03 GMT, 12 December 2012
Say you could win a thousand pounds, right here, right now, and all you had to do was hit a bloke on the nose with a 2p coin from 20 yards. Chances are, you couldn’t do it. It is quite hard to throw a 2p with any accuracy. It isn’t a cricket ball. Copper is quite light, but the surface area of the coin relatively large, meaning there is resistance and wind factor, plus your target is moving. All things considered, if your financial well-being depended on a tuppenny vice you would end the day as poor as you started it.
Ready, aim, fire: Manchester United players were pelted with missiles as they celebrated the win over City
Abuse: Wayne Rooney was subjected to a torrent of bile by City fans as he prepared to take a corner
So, there was in all likelihood significantly more to Rio Ferdinand’s injury, struck by a missile thrown by a member of the crowd in the Manchester derby, than mere dumb luck. The law of averages would have been at work, too. For if the same prize was up for grabs but you could have a hundred shies with that 2p piece, well, the balance of probability would produce a different set of figures.
And looking at the footage from behind one goal on Sunday, Ferdinand would not have needed to dodge a single coin after Robin van Persie scored Manchester United’s winning goal, but a whole monetary shower.
At one stage in the second half, Wayne Rooney goes to take a corner from the left. Clearly visible is a hail of tiny missiles as he stands, back to the fans, ready to restart the play. And it is this bit of footage that kills, dead, the idea that player provocation played any part in the events of Sunday.
Rooney wasn’t taunting the home fans, he didn’t even turn to them. Met with the standard sea of angry, contorted faces as he went to take his kick, he merely rounded to face the game and got on with his job. So there was no excuse, no mitigation beyond hatred and jealousy.
A section of modern football supporters do not need a trigger to demonstrate their brutal irresponsibility. And celebrating an emotional late goal isn’t a trigger anyway.
A caller to the BBC’s 606 phone-in show on Sunday attempted to shift the blame for the events at the Etihad Stadium on to Manchester United’s players, for the way they responded to victory. Incredibly, he was indulged by Alan Green, who allowed him his platform unchallenged, and even supplied a supporting anecdote.
He recalled the way Gary Neville once ran the length of the pitch at Old Trafford away from his team-mates, to celebrate a late winner, from Ferdinand, in front of Liverpool’s fans in the away end. Green was appalled by this. He painted a very moralistic portrait of how he would react, if he was ever in Neville’s position.
Cut: Rio Ferdinand was struck by a 2p coin, splitting the skin above his eye and drawing blood
Provoked, much: Gary Neville famously celebrated late United winner in front of Liverpool fans
Which, of course, he won’t be. None of us will. For what Green neglected to mention in his recounting of the incident, was the song the Liverpool supporters had been singing about Neville for much of that match, to the tune of London Bridge Is Falling Down, implying that he enjoyed a sexual relationship with his mother.
We can’t print it here and this is a pity, as to appreciate the full horror, one really needs to spell it out. Those with vivid imaginations and strong stomachs may wish to deduce more from the fact the final word rhymes with glitter. Now we’re getting there.
So Green, and others, can pontificate and judge, but until they have had several thousand people inserting their name where Neville’s is, they have no clue how they would react to an event as vindicating and cathartic as a last-minute winning goal.
If thousands of people were insulting you and, mid-sentence, an event happened that silenced those voices and caused them great upset, might you not revel in it, just a little?
And might you not, as Neville did, jump high in the air in pure elation and run towards the tormentors, gripping your Manchester United shirt and holding its badge out in defiance, while emitting a roar of pure rage?
In John Carpenter’s film Escape From New York, a kidnapped President played by Donald Pleasence finally gets his revenge on the preening gangland overlord who captured and tortured him (see below). As he guns him down, he screams in mockery and vengeance the words he was made to recite under duress: ‘Aay, number one! You’re the Duke, you’re the Duke! You’re ‘A’ Number 1.’
Carpenter wanted to show the savage inside every man. That goal against Liverpool brought out the darker side of Neville. Pushed to his limit, he reacted. Yet players did not start this war.
Being good at football is not in itself an act of provocation. Nor is scoring a goal and celebrating it. Some of us would like to see more smiles and less snarls when this happens, because Sir Alex Ferguson gets easily as much grief as his players but always reacts to a Manchester United goal with untrammelled glee, but as long as no scorer deliberately instigates a riot, then all’s fair.
On Sunday, United celebrated in front of their own fans, who happened to be adjacent to a Manchester City section. There was nothing provocative in what they did, unless winning a contentious derby match late is now reclassified as incitement. Maybe if the scores are tied, or close, with 10 minutes to spare, the referee should blow early to prevent anybody getting overwrought.
The reaction of Phil Jones has been mentioned by some City supporters, and it is true the defender did run the length of the pitch to join the celebrations, looking at the home fans and gesturing for them to now be quiet; but a couple of observations.
First, Jones was deep on the right, and United’s little party took place high on the left. So the idea that Ferdinand was hit by a coin because of something Jones was invisibly doing on the other side of the field is preposterous.
Second, Jones had spent the bulk of the match, 85 minutes, on the substitutes’ bench where, one imagines, he had heard and felt the full force of hatred from the home support. Might this be why he was a little more caught up in the moment than usual?
Nobody goes to Paddy Crerand for the impartial take on United, but his outrage during a radio interview when confronted with a lot of mealy-mouthed questions that appeared to place the blame on the visiting players was understandable.
Yet this is not about United and City or United and Liverpool. This is not about any individual club at all. Only a fool believes that what happened on Sunday is not repeated, in varying degrees of intensity, around the country each weekend.
Reaction: Phil Jones has been accused after he ran to join his delighted team-mates
This is about players and fans. It was United under attack this week, it could be City on the receiving end in the return fixture later this season. (When Ferguson recalled the venom recently directed at his players in the derby and at Chelsea, he conveniently forgot that a City player had been hit by an object thrown at Old Trafford in 2009.)
And what is the crime these young men have committed? They’re good at football. They can put the ball in the net. They achieve the point of the game. They possess the dedication, the discipline, the work ethic and talent, to stand on the pitch and perform. And when they do, apparently, their skill is too provocative for some tastes. What a perverse little society we have become.

Wenger to be given 'considerable resources' in January, says Arsenal Supporters' Trust
The spokesman for the group reveals that the Frenchman will have plenty of resources available to him in the window as the Gunners seek Champions League qualification
Dec 13, 2012 1:10:00 PM
By Jordan Halford
The Arsenal Supporters' Trust (AST) say they have been informed that Arsene Wenger will be given "considerable resources" in January as the Gunners seek to salvage their season.
Arsenal qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League with considerable ease, but their quest to end a seven-year trophy drought came crashing down at Valley Parade as League Two Bradford City eliminated them with a dramatic 3-2 penalty shootout win in the Capital One Cup.
The AST met with chief executive Ivan Gazidis on Wednesday to discuss the club's perceived lack of direction, but they were assured that the Frenchman will be given the financial backing required to compete, with the club eyeing moves for several players including Pepe Reina and Wilfried Zaha.
"There is plenty of money there," Trust spokesman Tim Payton told BBC Sport.
"That was the message that Ivan and his finance director were giving this evening.
"He stayed for over two hours. He apologised for the result [at Bradford] and said it was not good enough and had to be better.
"The Arsenal fans were dissatisfied with the strength of the squad and particularly don't understand whether there were resources to be used.
"I specifically raised this with the finance director and his colleague and they were in no doubt there is considerable resources available to the manager ready to spend when he has identified the players he wants to sign.
"It's crystal clear that Arsenal fans need to wait until January for Arsene Wenger to use the cheque book he has been given well."
Wenger's position has come under increasing scrutiny in light on recent results, but the Trust still has complete faith in the club's most successful ever manager.
"Lots of people have asked me whether Arsene Wenger should go," said Payton.
"He certainly needs to change and improve, spend the money he's got, strengthen the set-up around him and the results will be the judge."
West Ham eye striker Chamakh as Arsenal target Aurier to replace Sagna
By SIMON JONES PUBLISHED: 23:09 GMT, 14 December 2012 | UPDATED: 23:09 GMT, 14 December 2012
West Ham are interested in taking Arsenal striker Marouane Chamakh on loan in January. The 28-year-old came on as a substitute in Tuesday's Capital One Cup defeat at Bradford and missed a penalty in the shootout.
Flop: Arsenal's Marouane Chamakh
He is surplus to requirements at Arsenal and, although there has been interest from Fiorentina, the player wants to stay in England.
West Ham, however, face a battle to hold on to Momo Diame, with foreign sides now showing interest in the midfielder alongside Newcastle and Arsenal.
The Senegal star will be fit in three weeks after damaging his hamstring last week and can leave for £3.5million.
Arsenal, meanwhile, have added Toulouse right back Serge Aurier to their list of potential targets. The club remain wary of Bacary Sagna leaving next year and have watched 19-year-old Aurier.
Rooney's warning: Sunderland fans gloated when City won the title... I will have my revenge!
By IAN LADYMAN PUBLISHED: 22:30 GMT, 14 December 2012 | UPDATED: 22:30 GMT, 14 December 2012
Wayne Rooney is determined to shake off a midweek virus to face the one team he says he wants to beat more than any other this season. The Manchester United centre forward would normally ring games against Liverpool, Everton, Chelsea and neighbours City when the fixtures are announced each summer but this time he had a special eye on Saturday’s visit to Old Trafford of Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland team.It was after a win at Sunderland on the last day of the last season that United discovered they had lost the Barclays Premier League title to City courtesy of an injury-time goal by Sergio Aguero and Rooney has never forgotten the reaction of the home fans.
Out for revenge: Wayne Rooney was not impressed with Sunderland's supporters' actions
Rooney said recently: ‘I don’t know whether I will play the previous games before it, I just want to play against Sunderland.‘When the fixtures come out I look for three games — City, Liverpool and Everton. This time I checked the Sunderland game. If there is one team that I want to beat this season it will be Sunderland.’United manager Sir Alex Ferguson revealed last night that Rooney is in the squad for today’s game after overcoming a stomach bug and it appears the England forward has a long memory.Speaking straight after the final whistle at Sunderland last May, he said: ‘When the final whistle went, we didn’t really know what the score at City was.‘But then we heard the Sunderland fans cheering. It was sad to see because they should be supporting their own team really.
They didn’t have the best of seasons so for them to be cheering like that was sad. It was something myself and a lot of the players won’t forget.’Ferguson stressed last night that he holds no personal grudge against the Sunderland fans who revelled in United’s misery seven months ago.The United manager said: ‘What their fans did was disappointing when you think of the number of players we’ve given Sunderland. We gave them the players that got them promoted, Jonny Evans and Danny Simpson. But that’s fans, isn’t it? Winning the game is important and it’s time for us to kick on and make sure we maintain the lead at the top of the league.’
Disappointed: Sir Alex Ferguson was also upset by the taunts after City snatched the title
United are top by six points after last weekend’s thrilling win at City and welcome back captain Nemanja Vidic after a knee injury.Ferguson responded to suggestions by City manager Roberto Mancini that the current champions are still a better side than United. ‘I don’t think that’s accurate,’ he said.‘You definitely saw the two best teams in the league. The issue for us now is to make sure we don’t do anything silly. It’s winning the next game that will mean more to me.’
Ferguson ridiculed those who have questioned O’Neill’s position at Sunderland after recent poor results. ‘Martin was asked a ridiculous question last week when he was asked if he still had self-belief,’ said Ferguson. He’s won three titles with Celtic, took them to the Uefa Cup final, and been at Aston Villa and Leicester City. What a silly question. It’s an insult and I’m glad his chairman is supporting him, he’s an outstanding manager.'

Manchester City announce huge losses for second year running
The Blues posted a deficit of €120m for the financial year ending May 2012, though this was significantly less than the €243m marked down for the previous 12 months
Dec 14, 2012 6:50:00 PM
By Tim Poole
Manchester City have announced huge losses for the second year in a row, with the club losing €120 million during the last financial period.
City reported turnover for the same period of €283m, the highest in the club's history and a rise from €184m the previous year, but still operated at a significant overall loss.
The club’s inability to progress from the Champions League group stage is believed to have had a huge impact on their turnover.
However, the figures represent a marked improvement from the season before, when City lost a total of €243m.
Meanwhile, the club posted marginal increases in gate and TV revenue, and almost doubled their commercial revenue from €80m to €148m.
Moreover, it is believed that around €98m of the losses originates from contracts that pre-date 2010, from which City expect to get some kind of relief.
The overall figures have allowed the Premier League champions to remain confident in their ability to meet Uefa's Financial Fair Play guidelines as €18.4m of their losses have come from infrastructure and youth development costs.
The club’s annual statement for the year ending May 31, 2012, said: "The capital base of the club has also been strengthened through the issuing of £169m [€207m] in new equity during the year, avoiding debt-based funding and continuing to ensure that the club is virtually debt free.”
Chief executive Ferran Soriano also said: "What I have found is a club on the verge of a historic transformation, reinforced by a genuine commitment to doing things well.
"It is a club with a rich history and the potential for an even brighter future."
United and Arsenal prepare £15m bids for contract rebel Sterling
By DAVID KENT PUBLISHED: 09:19 GMT, 15 December 2012 | UPDATED: 09:19 GMT, 15 December 2012
Arsenal and Manchester United have joined the race for Liverpool's contract rebel Raheem Sterling. The 18-year-old has yet to pen a new deal at Anfield after impressing in the opening months of the season. And that has alerted United and Arsenal, according to The Sun while Manchester City are also in the frame should Sterling decide to leave Liverpool.
Wanted: Raheem Sterling has attracted interest from several clubs
Brendan Rodgers admitted yesterday that talks have not moved on with the player's advisors.Sterling, who is valued at £15million, has become a first-team regular at Anfield and also made his England debut against Sweden but could yet choose to represent Jamaica, the country of his birth. Were he to move to Old Trafford, he would become the first player to move from Liverpool since Phil Chisnall nearly 50 years ago.Former United winger Willie Morgan told Sir Alex Ferguson earlier this week to sign Sterling.
Concerns: Brendan Rodgers admitted Sterling has yet to sign a new deal
Morgan, a former Scotland international who made 236 appearances for United between 1968 and 1975, told the Manchester Evening News: ‘I think United should attempt to buy Liverpool’s left winger Raheem Sterling.
‘Sterling is the first winger I have seen in a long time who looks like a proper winger. He looks very good already and I think he is going to be great.
‘If you just let him go wide on the outside of the full-backs all the time I think he will be a great player. He’ll frighten people to death, so long as nobody coaches it out of him. He’s the brightest prospect out there and would suit United.’
Clattered again: Now City accuse referee as banned Barry set to miss Newcastle clash
By CHRIS WHEELER and IAN LADYMAN PUBLISHED: 23:55 GMT, 14 December 2012 | UPDATED: 23:55 GMT, 14 December 2012
Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini has accused match official Mark Clattenburg of landing Gareth Barry in trouble as details emerged on Friday night of their clash in the Manchester derby. The England midfielder is suspended for Saturday's trip to Newcastle after he admitted using insulting language towards Clattenburg in the final moments of last weekend's explosive meeting with Manchester United at the Etihad Stadium. There are concerns at City that Clattenburg, who was acting as fourth official, was determined to take a hard-line stance after spending a month out of the game following his race row with Chelsea midfielder John Obi Mikel in October.
Back in the spotlight: Mark Clattenburg has been criticised by Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini
Clattenburg was cleared of all allegations by the police and FA, but admitted afterwards that he feared for his future in football.Mancini said: 'I think that Gareth is a serious man, a serious player and I don't know why Clattenburg brought or said these things about him.'I don't know if it's because he had this problem after Chelsea but I think every referee or fourth official should understand if a player uses inappropriate words after they have lost a game in the last second.
'I don't know if he said those words against Chelsea players. They decided not but this is another situation.'This has come from Clattenburg. He should understand the situation, this is my opinion, but at the moment he doesn't understand.'It is understood that the incident was sparked by Clattenburg urging referee Martin Atkinson to blow for full-time as tempers flared in the aftermath of Robin van Persie's late winner when Carlos Tevez lashed out at Phil Jones.Barry heard the comments near the touchline and reacted angrily to Clattenburg's intervention.
He and City 'reluctantly' accepted the charge because he did swear, but they feel that he has been singled out because it was no worse than what most players say routinely during the course of a match. Barry also disputes the exact wording of what else he is meant to have said to Clattenburg in Atkinson's official report.City were particularly unhappy with the 37-year-old official from Tyne and Wear for calling on Atkinson to end the game because they believe the ball had been in play for less than half the four minutes added on for stoppages.
A day to forget: Gareth Barry (left), Carlos Tevez and Matija Nastasic after Manchester United's late winner in the derby
In training: City boss Roberto Mancini with Carlos Tevez and Yaya Toure on Friday
Ironically, Atkinson was the referee at Old Trafford in September 2009 when he added on the same amount of time and left City aggrieved when Michael Owen snatched United's winner after almost six minutes of injury-time.The Premier League champions have written a strongly worded letter to the FA complaining about Barry's one-match ban and £8,000 fine, although it is believed to have met with little sympathy. The FA are growing increasingly unhappy over what they see as City's attempts to drag Clattenburg into the row. Sources also indicate that Barry would have been unlikely to incur an extra one-match ban for a frivolous challenge had he decided to fight the charge, so the FA feel that City had their opportunity for a full hearing and did not to take it.
Ugly scenes: Rio Ferdinand was struck by an object at the end of last weekend's derby
As the fallout from last Sunday's derby continues, City skipper Vincent Kompany has urged the football authorities not to treat fans 'as animals' by putting up netting in the wake of Rio Ferdinand being hit by a coin thrown from the crowd. The PFA have proposed the move, but Kompany said: 'I've heard a lot of suggestions about putting up nets and everything, but the fact we are able to put people outside of cages is something that makes the English game so much more special.' Mancini has given Kompany just a 'two per cent' chance of being fit for the lunchtime clash on Tyneside when City hope to close the six-point gap on United.

And there was more bad news when the Italian confirmed that Yaya Toure and his brother Kolo are expected to join up with Ivory Coast for the Africa Cup of Nations after City's FA Cup tie against Watford on January 5 and could be missing for up to five weeks. Losing Yaya will be a particular blow to City, while Kolo's absence could affect any plans to loan out-of-favour defender Joleon Lescott back to Everton.'We need to have three central defenders so I think it's difficult,' said Mancini. 'I'm worried because Yaya for us is really important. To lose him for 40 days in January will be a big problem.'

Redknapp to meet QPR owner Fernandes over January transfer targets Anelka and Cole

Harry Redknapp will meet Queens Park Rangers owner Tony Fernandes this week to discuss the club's transfer window plans. Redknapp will have £10million to spend in January but is expected to rely largely on loan deals. Liverpool's Joe Cole and former Chelsea striker Nicolas Anelka are targets.
Target man: Joe Cole could be offered an escape route from Liverpool by QPR
Anelka is also being targeted by east Londoners West Ham.Cole has struggled to force his way back into the Liverpool team since he returned from a season-long loan at French side Lille. The 31-year-old made 32 appearances for the Ligue 1 club and scored four goals.Should Cole choose to link up with Redknapp it would not be for the first time. The former England international played under Redknapp during his time at West Ham.
The midfielder scored his first goal of the season against the Hammers last week, but doesn't appear to be in Brendan Rodgers' plans. Meanwhile, QPR are preparing an official approach for Tottenham coach Les Ferdinand. They are also keen on adding Clive Allen to their set-up.

EXCLUSIVE: Monaco boss Ranieri looking to snap up Lampard for a second time
By NEIL ASHTON PUBLISHED: 22:47 GMT, 17 December 2012 | UPDATED: 22:47 GMT, 17 December 2012
Frank Lampard is wanted by former Chelsea manager Claudio Ranieri at French second division side Monaco as the England midfielder prepares to quit Stamford Bridge.Ranieri signed Lampard from West Ham for £11million in 2001. Although the Italian was fired by Roman Abramovich in May 2004, Lampard retains a healthy respect for him as a coach. Ranieri wants to take advantage of Lampard’s fading star at Chelsea after the London club failed to open talks with the player over a new deal.
Nearing the exit: Frank Lampard applauds the Chelsea fans in Japan after the defeat by Corinthians
Old times: Lampard was brought to Chelsea by Claudio Ranieri (right) and still has a lot of time for his former boss
Sportsmail revealed Ranieri’s interest last month and Monaco are ready to make an official approach if Chelsea signal they are prepared to let him leave.Although Monaco cannot match Lampard’s net salary of around £130,000 a week, the principality is tax-free and will appeal to the Chelsea midfielder, although his children from a previous relationship are in London. Soon after taking over as Chelsea interim coach, Rafa Benitez said Lampard and left back Ashley Cole would be leaving the club at the end of the season.
Lampard, 34, has been told his contract will not be renewed in the summer after 12 years at the club, during which he has won three Premier League titles.Although he was on the bench for the Club World Cup semi-final victory over Mexican side Monterrey, he started the final against Corinthians and captained the team in the absence of John Terry. Before flying back from Japan, Lampard emphasised Chelsea’s need to re-ignite their domestic season, starting with the Capital One Cup quarter-final tie at Leeds on Wednesday.
He said: ‘We have to pick it up for Leeds. We have to go there and stand up and get our form back at home.‘Win this and we’re in the semi-final and with the possibility of a decent draw but we’ve got to win the games. It’s tough to go to Elland Road. There’s a rivalry. We’re aware of it and we have to play with passion and do the physical side of things. They’re going to be right at it. We can’t expect to go up there and tap it around and get a result.’The last time Leeds manager Neil Warnock heard from Benitez it was to threaten legal action.
Criticism: Neil Warnock and Chelsea interim manager Rafa Benitez (left) do not get on well
Warnock has criticised Benitez several times since his Sheffield United side were relegated on the last day of the 2007 season, admitting he ‘hated’ the Spaniard for fielding what he felt was an under-strength Liverpool team against Fulham a week earlier.‘I don’t think I should get into that,’ said Warnock. ‘The last time I heard from Rafael he was threatening to sue me in an email if I mentioned it again.‘But enough water has passed under the bridge. I don’t want to give you any more ammunition.’
Unimpressed: Warnock was furious that Benitez did not field a full strength team
City face struggle to fine Balotelli after controversial striker takes champions to task for docking him £340k for indiscipline
By IAN LADYMAN PUBLISHED: 12:00 GMT, 17 December 2012 | UPDATED: 06:49 GMT, 18 December 2012
Mario Balotelli will accuse Manchester City of ignoring hard and fast disciplinary rules agreed by the Premier League and all its member clubs when he comes face to face with his employers at what promises to be an explosive tribunal in London on Wednesday. Balotelli will appear before an independent Premier League two-man panel to contest a two-week fine of £340,000 imposed by City for what they believe has been persistently poor discipline on the pitch.
However, it emerged last night that City and their lawyers face quite a task to come out on top after it became clear that their punishment - imposed for persistent yellow and red cards last season - falls outside rules drawn up by the Professional Footballers' Association, the Premier League and the Football League several years ago.
Jump to it: Balotelli faces his club at a tribunal on Wednesday over a £340,000 fine for poor discipline
City charged Balotelli with misconduct and attempted to fine him at the end of last season because he missed a fifth of his club's games in all competitions through suspension. However, a source familiar with the rules told Sportsmail last night that although clubs are permitted to fine players for dissent and violent conduct that occurs during matches, there is nothing in the rules that allows them to impose internal sanctions when a player merely accumulates a string of cards.
City clearly believe they have a case and will be happy that they have followed the correct procedures. However, the source told Sportsmail: 'This will be a very tough one to get through. The guidelines are clear and were agreed by all the clubs.'There is nothing in the rules that says you can just fine a player because he has picked up a load of bookings.'
Many clubs do have rules about discipline and even put them in players' contracts. However, they are not sacrosanct and it is understood that, in most cases, the rules agreed by the football authorities are judged to hold sway.
Balotelli will be represented by his Italian lawyers tomorrow and is expected to attend in person. City's own legal team will also be present. This is the second time a City player has challenged a fine imposed by the club after Carlos Tevez managed to get a four-week fine of £796,000 halved after the intervention of the PFA last year.
Support: Roberto Mancini is alone at Manchester City in backing Mario Balotelli to prove himself at the club
It is understood that the PFA are 'baffled' by City's latest act and Balotelli will be assisted by the association's Richard Jobson on Wednesday. If City do lose out then it could be embarrassing for them. Whatever the case, it is clear there will be twists and turns ahead. For example, if Balotelli loses then he could choose to appeal to the Football League's appeals committee, something that would see the issue dragged out.
Meanwhile, the player himself is running out of allies at City and it is understood now that only manager Roberto Mancini stands between the 22-year-old and total isolation at the club. Balotelli was left at home by Mancini for the weekend trip to Newcastle with the City boss citing poor fitness and now it can be revealed that senior members of the dressing room and the majority of the coaching staff feel he should be left out over Christmas.
Struggles: Balotelli started against Manchester United but failed to impress
The feeling is Balotelli's occasional moments of effectiveness on the field are now far outweighed by the circus that constantly surrounds him away from the pitch. City played well at Newcastle in winning 3-1 and were especially effective when Sergio Aguero, Samir Nasri and David Silva had the ball. Many at City have seen this as a sign that the team can cope without Balotelli as they endeavour to catch leaders Manchester United. It is widely presumed that City will try to move Balotelli on in the January transfer window.
This, however, is far from certain as Mancini continues to cling to his own belief that he can shape the former Inter Milan player into the finished article. Mancini, though, is the only person at City who now believes this. His national team manager, Cesare Prandelli, has suggested a move back to his homeland could be beneficial for Balotelli.Prandelli, for whom Balotelli impressed at Euro 2012, told Rai Sport: 'Mancini is absolutely right. Balotelli must listen to him, I agree with him.'Everything depends on Mario, however. Coaches can try to stimulate and negotiate with you but everything must start from him.'Returning to Italy could help him. It's important for him to have continuity, the city or the country is not the problem.'
TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS
Premier League players (and managers) have taken their clubs to tribunal before - and usually left soon after. Here are four...
Charlie Adam v Blackpool – November 2010: Their captain launched a case after the Tangerines failed to pay a £25,000 bonus which was owed when Championship safety had been secured. Adam won but legal fees were considerable. He then signed for Liverpool.
Dan Gosling v Everton – July 2010: Earned the right to leave the club on a free transfer after successfully arguing that as his contract extension was only offered verbally and not in writing it was invalid. He moved to Newcastle for nothing.
Alan Curbishley v West Ham – November 2009: The manager won £2million from the club after Anton Ferdinand and George McCartney were sold behind his back. He had a clause in his contract demanding final say on transfers and claimed constructive dismissal.
Gabriel Heinze v Man Utd – August 2007: Tried to force a transfer to arch-rivals Liverpool after losing his place, but Sir Alex Ferguson blocked it. The Argentinian defender appealed to the Premier League but failed and was sold to Real Madrid for £6.8m.
Ferdinand could leave United in 2013 with interest from US and Middle East
By IAN LADYMAN PUBLISHED: 23:12 GMT, 17 December 2012 | UPDATED: 23:47 GMT, 17 December 2012
Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand will decide on his football future in the new year. Ferdinand is expected to be offered a one-year extension to the United contract that runs out in the summer after overcoming back problems to play regularly for the last 18 months. However, the 34-year-old has interest from the Middle East and America and is attractive to other clubs in the Barclays Premier League as well.
On his way? Rio Ferdinand may leave Manchester United in 2013
Ferdinand has not given any indication about whether he will stay at Old Trafford or continue his career at all, despite United manager Sir Alex Ferguson stating publicly that he hopes he will delay his retirement. It is understood that the veteran defender wants to see how his body copes with the rigours of the winter programme before making a decision.
I'm glad I turned Chelsea down! Warnock claims there is no loyalty in football and is happy he turned down Blues in 1991
By MATT DINER, PRESS ASSOCIATION PUBLISHED: 00:13 GMT, 18 December 2012 | UPDATED: 00:13 GMT, 18 December 2012
Warnock is happy he turned down the Chelsea job in 1991
Leeds boss Neil Warnock believes there is no loyalty to managers in football, but has no regrets about turning down the Chelsea job in the early nineties to remain at Notts County for that very reason.Ken Bates - Warnock's current chairman at Leeds - offered Warnock the job in 1991, but after guiding Notts County to the top flight following successive promotions, he decided to stay put. Warnock was sacked two years later.
Leeds face-off against Chelsea on Wednesday night in the quarter-final of the Capital One Cup at Elland Road.'I don't have any regrets really because your life shapes around decisions really and I was a northern lad and I thought going beyond Watford was the end of the world in those days,' he said.'I went down twice, once to the ground and once to Ken's farm in Beaconsfield and I was stuck on the motorway for five hours on both occasions and it didn't seem to be me really, so there are a lot of issues.
'I wanted to stay loyal to a group of players who had been fantastic for me.'If it was a different way round, why do managers say loyal, you get the sack anyway, why not go and take the opportunity? Good luck to you. I've nothing about this loyalty thing now. My advice to young managers is if you get the chance, go.'You get kicked in the teeth if you stay so you can't win either way.
'After going through nine managers since Roman Abramovich bought the club from Bates in 2003, the Blues are seemingly the perfect example to illustrate Warnock's point.Rafael Benitez is the latest man to fill the role and is someone who the Leeds boss has said in the past he would 'never forgive' for picking what Warnock deemed a weakened team in Liverpool's final away game of the 2007 season against Fulham.
Warnock hasn't always seen eye to eye with Benitez but he thinks the Spaniard was right to take the Chelsea job
Managing Sheffield United at the time, the Blades needed Benitez's Reds to get a result against Fulham, who were in the relegation zone. The Whites won the game 1-0, a result which saw them survive at the expense of United.Warnock's criticism of Benitez led to the Spaniard's legal team sending an email warning of possible legal action were he to be mentioned again.'Enough water's passed under the bridge,' Warnock said.
'I don't want to give you any more ammunition than you've already got.'It's one of those things that disappoints you in life and you have to get on with it really, but you get disappointments in every walk of life and I've made my feelings clear on how my feelings have been over the last few years and nothing will change that.'I think it (the email) had his name on, I think it was his solicitor on who was threatening legal action and I've got it in a scrapbook at home.'I've no idea (if they will shake hands), I haven't thought about it yet, I was too worried about Ipswich (last Saturday).'
Chelsea travel to Elland Road on the back of a 1-0 loss to Corinthians in the Club World Cup final
Benitez has been hired as manager on an interim basis until the end of the season, but with the Spaniard being out of work since he left Inter in 2010 Warnock feels he was right to accept the role.'I don't blame Benitez for taking the job,' Warnock added before saying tongue-in-cheek.'He'd been out of work for quite some time, if it were me I would be there like a shot.'I wish I could have had Chelsea now, yes, I should have got it this time! After Roberto left, he hasn't had an Englishman in the job, has he?'
