Prof, 200k is a lot depending on which estate. I have seen even those in ungated and unguarded ones putting some houses in HH to shame.
On the other hand, some people really went a teeny bit overboard. 150k - 200k is pretty standard in some developments, most of neighbour houses ranges from than 150k but this pales in comparison with more than a few who spent like 500k to 1.2million (i kid you not) to renovate, build koi ponds, "zen" gardens and even a big swing in the middle of a pond! (connected by nice granite slabs)

The money spent could have bought many other houses but different things appeal to different people i guess. Some of my neighbours even took down all their external walls and rebuilt. Some nicely, some maybe require a little bit more taste.

Hi

Btw, those living in HH, ST, EL, ND ..etc, do you have a low water pressure issue? When we first moved in, we found out that low water pressure is normal because the water flows from the water tank placed in the ceiling. Only the kitchen tap gets direct water supply. Hence we spent about RM1300 to modify pipings so that water points receive direct water source. This is quite common, but some choose to install water pump. We also paid RM700 to change some pipes to stainless steel type that can withstand the strong water pressure from direct source. Now, we can have nice showers; and watering plants and washing cars become easier ...

Thanks for sharing Austin Heights, yes i did that for most of my houses as well. A friend of mine did for his houses too but got complained by neighbours as a bit too noisy (for terrace houses) if they use it at night. Its a common problem, we fixed some of ours for about 1.1k. The one we live in came with the basic pump for the showers so this is still ok.

Hi Dapbest, you've got me thinking of prata now...... where is Habib? Is ND= Nusa Damai? Appreciate if you could enlighten.

Yes, very nice prata. It is ND = Nusa Duta. Very near to the Giant hypermarket and further up from the Ali cafe row. Do check on Habibs pricing sometimes, with so many of us patronizing it round the clock, they sometimes do "over charge" especially if they think you wouldn't notice.

My learned wife remarked to me once though when our neighbours kindly told us about this, aiyah even though overcharged, still cheaper then Singapore what..

I went through pretty humbling experiences after being out here in JB. I am sure there are lots of good people all over the world as well, even especially in SG but living out here gives me more time and opportunity to mingle with people.

There are some who drives lousy cars but have nice bank accounts. There are those that live in small houses but donates a lot to charity/church/temples monthly.

I even know of one family, its a large family, they lost their sister when they were young as due to superstition in the early days, they had to give her away to a Malay couple. They never forgot about her and tried all sorts of means and ways to find her.

Fast forward 20 years later, they finally found her and reunited with her but found to their horrow that the adopted family never sent her to school (as they were too poor) She was a very bright lady who despite having no education, managed to support her family through her acute business acumen.

A couple of the sisters and brothers went together and bought her a house. Nothing spectacular but how many of us can say that our siblings care enough even in the first place. They also gave her a small sum to start her business. Till today they still keep in touch and see each other on all the related festivals.

I was more than touched, living out here, having more space and time to smell the roses, i saw things that i seldom see back in SG. We have regular neighbours who will give us plants, fruits, food, engine parts even out of the blue. We reciprocate as well, when people go overseas, they leave us their keys and we leave ours as well. When there are good deals, we will pop over excitedly to share and talk etc. I find that in large countries i went to, the people do tend to have more time to talk to you, rather than just wham, bam, thank you mdm. This place is not perfect, its just different, it really grows on you.

Its a kind of kampong spirit i missed ever since we moved out of the kampong in SG when i was little. I wished my grandfather was still alive and living out here, he would have been proud of my dad and could enjoy the easy life he never got to enjoy(cancer took him away from me very shortly in the same year i was conscripted).

I would gladly die 20 years younger if he could have live much longer and enjoy life. Bros, please stop smoking, i am still trying to convince my dad but for the sake of your loved ones, please please please stop.

You may have a son, a daughter or grandchildren who always loved you silently and wants to be fillial to you but can only do so every Qing Ming, sweeping and weeping at your grave.

Not me... My wifes suppliers.

They liked the resort feel they said at Setia Eco Gardens.

they mentioned it was a place for them to unwind and chill.

Ofcourse it should age gracefully. Though there could be management committee problems which every estate will have.

Thanks Prof.. hope the precinct age gracefully in years to come..
you had frens who did reno up to 200K??

Yeap my wife told me that at the mamak shops if you are not careful it is 1, 2, 3 and then becomes $10 somehow...

Lucky for me i dun eat pratas (dunno where they originate from).

The North Indians make parathas/tandoor rotis/naans (not the naans at the mamak shops) (hard to find in spore and malaysia). .

Now where did prata come from? I dunno. Would love to learn that bit.

Yes the low water pressure is cause the water comes from the overhead tank which is not able to create sufficient pressure.

A couple of guys i know changed their water connections to link directly to the source (which is the main tank at the Taman) to increase water pressure.

And ever since they say they have wonderful water pressure everywhere

Costed them Rm 350 at Setia Tropika.

So what i heard was definitely true after all.

Just imagine Rm 1 and then Rm 20....

Phew and we pay a lot more than that (S$65--old rate) and still dun get warded!!!

Lots of govt hospitals and reasonably good treatment.

my father was recently requiring emergency medical attention. sent him to government hospital RM$1. Need to be warded. RM$20. No extras. MYsian.

Thanks a lot to the bros for all the inputs with regards to the hospitals and medical care, one of my neighbours recently went to the private hospitals here, very impressed. He is going to move his dad over from SG. I strongly urge those who have relatives and friends suffering from chronic illnesses and who are not financially well off to start thinking of coming out here. I hope more affordable healthcare can be available to the poor as no one is going to help us but ourselves.

More than that...S$65 is excluding medication whereas 1RM is including medication...medication can cost a few hundred or more...

People always say Singaporeans are so fortunate, now it is our turn to say Malaysians are so fortunate

The 1 & half storey has a nice balcony which my wife likes.. so now pondering on the feasibility of creating a balcony..

Oh I see, yeah design is subjective...where are you creating the balcony? Is it a corner house so can add the balcony at the corner?

Mine is the first batch of ND cluster. Its completed now waiting for keys. I fall in love with ND as it is close to HABIB 24hours coffeeshop where i can surf their wifi and a the same time try those chapati or tosay. Also there are shops within 200m from ND. For those who do not want to drive to go shopping, this is the place.

Yeah, very convienient location - can drive, can walk, can take bus (CW3)

Hi I saw your post and I am also very interested in living in JB and hope you can advise on which areas is safe and mid range priced?
I am going to move in first before moving my family over. 2 storey will be good. Hope you can assist us as a Singapore fellow.
Thank you. Ming
Hi Ming. This is a very good forum to read through, and please take a look at my weblog at www.puterim.com for all sorts about actually living here.
There are roughly three areas to choose from, the long established JB which is closer to Woodlands, Nusajaya which is across from Tuas, and the rest of a huge Johor.
Many of us newbies [moving here in the last 5 years] choose Nusajaya as it is a newer area that stretches close enough to make Woodlands an option if you need to go often enough to Singapore.
Read up first, because there is a lot of info to absorb, check out the many possible developments personally and then ask all the questions you may still need to because many of us will be happy to try and assist.
Good health and good luck!

When the guy told me about the Rm 1 thingie on Friday last i could not believe my ears. Thought he was talking nonsense.

Yes Malaysians are fortunate indeed. Low cost housing and now low cost medical treatment too.

Not to mention lower cost of living and a better standard of living.

More than that...S$65 is excluding medication whereas 1RM is including medication...medication can cost a few hundred or more...

People always say Singaporeans are so fortunate, now it is our turn to say Malaysians are so fortunate

Hi Wuqi, only a TINY number of people can actually quit cold. Cigarette smoking is a physical addiction that you can actually get rid of in 3 weeks, but the psychological addiction is another matter. This is my story which I confessed on puterim.com, because I COULD NOT QUIT even though I desperately wanted to.
Disastrous news: cigarettes and tobacco are significantly cheaper
When the price of a box of 20 fags went up to S$11.30 three years ago, both my husband and I were still smoking and such was our addiction (more than 40 years and 30ish years respectively) we would have preferred to give up food rather than tobacco.
Coming to Johor was devastating as a box of kretek – the only thing I smoked - was a throwaway RM$5, so I increased my smoking to two packs a day, and congratulated myself on how much money I was saving. Idiot!
Well, eventually I really wanted to quit. But even six months of fervent morning prayer, the feeling of weakness and dizziness and general ill health had me lighting up within 10 minutes of getting out of bed.
Not to speak of searching out stogies in the ashtray if it was too late at night to go out for another pack. Some people can quit cold – I simply could not.
The cure took an unbelievable single afternoon (about four hours) with Pam Oei, that divine Dimsum Dollie, who teaches Allen Carr’s Easyway to Quit Smoking with a money back guarantee. My husband also quit cold, and that is after 40 long years.
Pam was herself a tobacco addict, and was so impressed by the method’s results she bought into the franchise. We didn’t even need any additional hand-holding (though she did very sweetly keep email contact open and sent encouragement).
So if you want to quit but just cannot, call Pam at (65) 63299630. I will not bore you with how gloriously liberating it is to be free of that total addiction.
There is a limited smoking ban in Malaysia for 19 categories of places, including hospitals, medical clinics, public elevators, public restrooms, air-conditioned restaurants, public transport, government premises, educational institutions, gas stations, internet cafes, and shopping complexes. This does not extend to bars, cafes, and many open areas.

I think i did not mention that this guy also told me that the dental treatment is Rm2. Just imagine in Singapore a Root Canal Treatment can set you back by a minimum of S$ 3000 (upwards) depending on where you do it, the material of the crown, expertise of doctor, location etc.

I never did any of my Root Canals here in Sg. I can buy a flight ticket out complete my root canal, come back and still sometimes have money to spare.
