I see many Chinese add on English names in front
why is that so ?
are they not happy with the given names by their parents

Unusual appellations have been found on people of all kinds. The secretary for justice is Rimsky Yuen and the previous secretary for food and health was York Chow. Among celebrities, there is a Fanny Sit, Moses Chan, and Dodo Cheng. Models? We have a Vibeke, Bambi, Dada, and Vonnie. But lawyers take the prize. There is a Magnum, John Baptist, Ludwig, Ignatius, Bunny and four -- yes, four -- Benedicts.........

I recall my teacher in Secondary 3, who referred to all the students by their Chinese names, regardless of those who have English names.

This began when the white men,who sailed into the southern ports of China eons ago...& names like Theodosius Chang starts to emerge...it had never stopped...Western Outside..yellow inside.....my Father's generation was one Anglophiles..tea-sipping, western suited, Chinese Cultured & tradition...but western on the outside & embrace anything...that is "ang moh"...unique in certain way, but on the other side of the coin...it is a "yellow westerner"...hmmm

Do Indians adopt Western names just because their names are difficult for Ang Mos to remember? Do Greeks adopt Chinese names because 1 billion Chinese can't ever pronounce a Greek name?

Lee Byung Hun, when he was on the set of GI Joe, insisted that everyone call him Byung Hun. No Western names. Same for Chow Yun Fatt.

Other than those who've adopted Christianity as their religion, it could be just out of convenience/ease or a trend to associate with modernity. They still retain their surnames used behind their chosen western name. Not just the Chinese, other Asian races like Japanese, Thai, and even Indians too. Eg. Joe Lingam, Tony Kawai, blah blah.

What I don't see is Chinese adopeting keling names, eg. Raja Chan.
