Our WCYH resident engagement takes us to #Anchorvale Vista this week, as we wrap up our house visits to the cluster (we’ll be closing out the lower floors of 309D prior to the session, which begins at 8 in the evening). We’re aware that the elevators in the cluster have been a longstanding issue, and in addition to myself, the lift team will be present to update folks about the next steps to be taken, after the rollout of the usual Lift Enhancement Plan does not appear to have yielded material changes. Hope to be able to catch up with many tonight! #SengkangGRC

On August 24, #SengkangGRC will celebrate National Day with our annual Colors in the Park fiesta. For those who have yet to join us, it’s a morning of activity-filled programming, with music, art, and games, and food.
This year, we are expanding the scope of our competitions, to include not only the visual arts, but the literary arts, too. There will be a poetry competition, for the budding muses and lyricists out there to try their hand at being wordsmiths. But for the more visually-oriented creatives, we will have our usual age-appropriate drawing/painting and coloring competition.
Sign-up details are in the QR code. Entry is free, and prizes await. Slots are limited, so we encourage our residents to do so soon. And regardless of whether you choose to compete, do come down a celebrate our nation’s birthday in style later this August!

Recently, I was appointed as the president of the The Workers' Party Youth Wing (WPYW) . Voting Is one of the important rites of passage for many young folks, and it’s coincidentally one of the areas in political economy that I study as an academic. So it is perhaps appropriate that the first event that I’m formally involved in is a forum where we’ll host a panel of new (and newish) voters, who will share their thoughts on the experience. We’ve also invited Sylvia Lim, who possesses a keen understanding of the local voting system, to lend additional perspective from an experienced hand.
We’ve already had a steady stream of registrations, but some slots remain. To facilitate access, we’ll host the event at House of Offline, which is walking distance from Lavender MRT. Signup details in the QR or tinyurI.

Our next installment of WCYH resident engagement will happen on Saturday morning, and takes us back to #Compassvale, at the Cape neighborhood. As always, our #TeamSengkang volunteers, along with town council staff, will be present to assist with questions, queries, and concerns. If you’re not otherwise occupied, do pop by and say hello! #SengkangGRC

I learned, recently, about the kerfuffle over opposition leader Lim Tean’s statements about a young girl, who is not Singaporean, being featured on a National Day poster for Tanjong Pagar.
At one level, I understand the sentiment being made—surely, a local child could have been found for the campaign?—but this concern is, surely, misplaced. After all, there is absolutely nothing wrong with anyone, even a foreigner, wishing our nation a happy birthday. Indeed, one could even make the point that the citizens of our unlikely nation was born out of mostly immigrants, only one or two generations separated from their motherlands, and our National Day is a celebration of how we’ve managed to come together as one united people.
Now, I’ll be the first to recognize that, sadly, there are many who may feel that they’re someone second-class in their home country. It’s certainly distressing to hear stories of how our citizens may have been pushed into gig jobs, because they’ve been displaced by foreigners taking on roles that they’re perfectly capable of filling. Or that local businesses are being outcompeted by large multinationals that have deeper pockets, while enjoying favorable tax treatment, in their home economy.
These call for evening the playing field, but in a way that doesn’t entail discriminating against foreign talent or foreign firms. Rather, they push the case for making our treatment of the two groups truly equivalent. One possibility is to consider ways of diminishing the disparity in take-home wages for those on employment passes versus locals. Another is to align the effective tax rates on MNCs with their statutory ones, since there’s no inherent reason to provide special treatment to foreign firms, given all the advantages of size, reach, and connectivity that they already enjoy.
And on the part of immigrants, I think that the way forward is to embed them into Team Singapore, by making them feel welcome and wanted, helping them buy into our culture and ethos, and enfolding them into our broader Singaporean society is the way forward. To make them even more Singaporean, so to speak. And in that spirit, slamming a kid for wanting to be a part of our nation’s fabric strikes me as fundamentally misguided. Our tent is wide enough.

A walk around #SengkangGRC in recent days and weeks would have made it clear that National Day was around the corner: fluttering flags beneath windowsills and balconies, lightups of red and white, bannerettes lining the streets, national day songs played in the malls and MRT stations. Here’s a walkthrough of the decorations at the Sculpture Park at #Compassvale, which is immensely more impressive at night.
It’s important to realize that our nation’s birthday is often remembered in private, too. During one recent #Anchorvale house visit, we encountered a resident who had known the composer of Majulah Singapura, and he had a signed copy of the original score. Our daughter also decided to put some removable flag tattoos on her arms the night before, in anticipation of celebrations at her school.
And it’s finally here! Whether you’re planning a big party with friends and family, or catching the parade in private at home, here’s wishing everyone a Happy National Day. #TeamSengkang

Our next round of #TeamSengkang engagements will happen this morning, on the #Anchorvale Grove neighborhood. This is a slightly older cluster, so there could be plenty to discuss with regard to common area amenities and maintenance. I’m also looking forward to catching up with residents who would like to just pop by and share their thoughts and experiences!

Sengkang Town Council recently released a statement. :cool:

Sengkang Town Council recently released a statement on the withdrawal of a lawsuit (https://sktc.sg/Media.../Withdrawal-of-Suit-No-716-of-2017), which had been taken against several #workersparty town councilors. To understand the context, three facts—reiterated in the statement—are important to keep in mind:
1. Sengkang Town Council inherited this case, from Pasir Ris-Punggol Town Council (which in turn related to claims pertaining to the now-defunct Punggol East constituency);
2. To avoid conflicts of interest, the elected town councilors (Chua Kheng Wee 蔡庆威, He Ting Ru 何廷儒, and myself) recused ourselves from the decision to appoint an Independent Panel;
3. All Sengkang town councilors, including us, subsequently delegated all decisions pertaining to the case to the Independent Panel.
What was decided by the Panel, following mediation with the other involved parties, was to discontinue any further pursuit of legal action. You may read the joint statement here: https://ingoodfaith.blog/.../joint-statement-on-settlement/

Our most recent #TeamSengkang house visits and engagement sessions allowed us to wrap up 290C #Compassvale, as well as wrap up 325B #Anchorvale, along with getting a start at 332B. Our WCYH meet-and-greet was moved to Saturday mornings, and the most recent two editions took place at the Cape and Grove clusters.
One thing residents occasionally share with us has to do with the quality of cleaning in the common areas. What may surprise some to learn is that we actually receive about as much feedback that standards have risen, as much as fallen, after our administration took over and changed the cleaning contractor.
In my assessment, there are several reasons for this. One is the perception that cleaning is poorer in opposition-run wards. Some quick reflection will be sufficient to dispel this notion. After all, we don’t actually immediately change the cleaners (or cleaning company) after a handover; contracts have to be completed, and in the meantime, the cleaners remain unchanged. Almost all of our cleaning contractors also operate at the national level, and some also serve PAP-held constituencies, along with public facilities, like schools, hospitals, and airports. But perhaps most tellingly, a walk through neighborhoods in Singapore will quick reveal that there’s little reason to believe that there are systematic differences in cleanliness (and our weekly estate walks are, at least on the part of #workersparty MPs, to ensure that standards remain high in the communities we oversee).
What is entirely possible, however, is that changes in the specific cleaner may also result in variations in quality. While we work hard to convey high standards to all our conservancy team, performance differences are inevitable. What we do is to collate feedback—both from residents as well as our property officers (and the MP!)—and when it’s clear that a particular cleaner is slacking, we take a series of actions to remedy the situation. This includes warnings, and fines, and in the most egregious cases, we replace the cleaner altogether.
Regardless, we’re always working to improve the quality of the estate management in #SengkangGRC. We know this is important to our residents, and no issue is too small for us to try our best in making the day-to-day lives of the people we serve a little bit better.

Jamus handed out wee foldable fans. :thumbsup::eek::biggrin:

On National Day morning, #TeamSengkang did our part to spread patriotic cheer, by visiting a host of coffeeshops and hawker centers across #SengkangGRC with our team of red-and-white-clad volunteers. I managed to catch up with residents who were having brekkie at #Anchorvale coffeeshops, as well as a number of those at #Compassvale.
This year, we decided that, instead of little flags, we would hand out wee foldable fans, instead. These, we felt, would more likely be used over the course of the year, rather than just being displayed during the month of August. It features our national flower, along with cartoon icons.
As always, immense thanks to our volunteers for powering through the morning —and even part of the early afternoon—with me. Celebrations will continue, of course, and hopefully, we’ll catch many of you at our annual #ColorsInThePark festival later this month!
