The United Nations Security Council on Monday will vote on a draft resolution that would nullify President Trump's decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, according to Reuters.

The resolution, which was drafted by Egypt, doesn't specifically name Trump or the U.S. in its text, the news agency reported on Sunday.

But the one-page draft, which diplomats told Reuters enjoys broad support among the council, comes less than two weeks after Trump announced the U.S. would formally recognize the contested city as Israel's official capital.

In order to pass, the resolution would need the votes of nine of the 15 members of the council. It also cannot be vetoed by the U.S., France, Britain, Russia or China.

The U.S. Mission to the UN did not respond to Reuters' request for comment.

According to the news agency, the draft text "affirms that any decisions and actions which purport to have altered, the character, status or demographic composition of the Holy City of Jerusalem have no legal effect, are null and void and must be rescinded in compliance with relevant resolutions of the Security Council."

Arab leaders have criticized Trump's move, warning the decision could spark further unrest in the region.

Palestinians have long called for the eastern part of Jerusalem to serve as the capital of a future Palestinian state. Israel annexed that part of the city in 1967.

Thanks for adding here - I posted the same story under the Dotard/Jerusalem thread - trying to maintain some semblance of a consistent narrative in the themes despite the overlap following the Jerusalem announcement - but it has been an extraordinary two months and it is not getting easier to keep on top of the many strands of news and actions on the ground - even the KSA spinners (not expats or paid Western journos but Saudis) I speak to are complaining of being run into the ground (their role is to defend whatever KSA is doing and repeat Iran is bad on loop) - they were extremely annoyed and inconvenienced by the NYT story on the French chateau...

Yes, a roller coaster ride and probably once in a lifetime perhaps. Someone told me that after Vietnam War this is the second important event in his life and he expects a substantial shift in world politics from this.

The Strategy addresses key challenges and trends that affect our standing in the world, including:

  • Revisionist powers, such as China and Russia, that use technology, propaganda, and coercion to shape a world antithetical to our interests and values;
  • Regional dictators that spread terror, threaten their neighbors, and pursue weapons of mass destruction;
  • Jihadist terrorists that foment hatred to incite violence against innocents in the name of a wicked ideology, and transnational criminal organizations that spill drugs and violence into our communities.

Security Council votes 14-1 to reject Trumps recognition of Jerusalem. What an idiot? With US veto, it now goes to the General Assembly. Israel will now know where they stand in the eyes of the World. A political, strategic and PR disaster for Israel of a massive scale if it goes to a vote in the General Assembly?

UNESCO recently voted that Jews and their religion have no historical nor religious ties to Jerusalem or the Wailing Wall. UNESCO voted to rename the Western Wall by some Arabic name, clearly indicating that it is officially an Islamic shrine only. Any Jewish reference to the Wailing Wall is written in unofficial footnotes.

So why should Israel bother with the UN general assembly anymore? Did the Muslims bother with the General Assembly in 1948 when the majority of them voted to recognize Israel?

So its now a small matter of relocating their embassy. Localising the argument I suppose is their own comeback in what must be most embarrassing rebuke from all the members of the Security Council.

Actually a country need not site their embassy in the capital. They can place it anywhere and nobody gives a damn.

Unesco has come along way in becoming a joke.

The arabs and the muslims apparently give a damn.
