A disabled Singaporean national has been arrested and indicted after arriving at Narita airport near Tokyo with about 4 kilograms of stimulants concealed in a seat cushion for his wheelchair, investigative sources said.
The suspect, 47, has denied any knowledge of the stimulants, the sources said, adding that the arrest was made on Sept 5 and the man had already been indicted by the Chiba District Public Prosecutors Office by Monday on charges of violating the stimulant drug control law and the customs law.
The customs authorities estimate the stimulants, packed in four small bags in the seat cushion, have a street value of 360 million yen.
A customs source said the alleged case ‘‘is quite unconscionable because the suspect probably tried to take advantage of inspectors’ attitude toward the disabled, thinking they would hesitate to probe the handicapped.’‘
The suspect came to Japan on the afternoon of Sept 5 via Taipei from Hong Kong, flying on Cathay Pacific Airways.
According to customs house data, law enforcement authorities made a record-high 68 discoveries of illegal stimulants last year at Narita airport.
