"COIs were convened in the case of the 2013 Little India riot and the 2011 MRT breakdowns. We have provided reasons for why the current review committee should be reconstituted as a COI, reasons to which the government has not responded. It is not clear from MOH's responses on Sunday why a review committee and not a COI is their preferred mechanism for addressing the Hepatitis C outbreak at SGH, to which five patient deaths may be linked." Here's a proposal signed in my name, as media chair of the party. I had a hand in crafting the proposal, in debating over it and arguing for it, and so did many others, especially my good colleagues and bros, Mohamed Fairoz Shariff and Muhamad Faisal Abdul Manap . This is something I strongly believe in myself, but it is also a labour of love by many in the party, expressing our deeply held belief in Singapore's multiracialism.

Racial and religious harmony is an issue that I am very passionate about.

At UniSIM, I taught a course on 'Religion in Contemporary Societies', which explored the way religion affects our way of life. One of the things I have learnt from teaching that course is that Singapore has a long way to go when it comes to racial and religious harmony. Even though we are a nation that is built upon multiracialism, Singaporeans do not fully understand one another's cultural and religious beliefs. For example, there are still those amongst us who erroneously considers Hari Raya Aidilfitri as the Muslim New Year.

I am of the opinion that Singapore has yet to become a truly multiracial society because Singaporeans are often too shy to talk to one another about their cultural and religious beliefs. It also does not help that the government continues to advocate that any open discussions about our cultural and religious differences should be avoided because it will adversely affect the social fabric of our society. As a result, all discussions on racial and religious discrimination in Singapore have been mostly done behind closed doors. This lack of openness has created a Singaporean society that does not fully understand the many cultures and religions that make up our multiracial society.

For Singapore to become a truly multiracial society, we need to learn to embrace our cultural and religious differences as a unique facet of the Singaporean society. We need to be able to openly talk to one another about our cultural and religious differences so that we can stop having unhealthy misconceptions about one another.

Let us therefore support the party's call for a committee to study and address all and any persistent perceptions of discrimination amongst our minority communities, because such a committee will move Singapore in the right direction of being more open about discussing our cultural and religious differences.

The Workers' Party Volunteer Network

Hi guys! This forum letter in yesterday's ST (http://www.straitstimes.com/…/volunteers-pay-may-send-wrong…) got us thinking about the nature of volunteerism.

Here are some of the thoughts from The Workers' Party Youth Wing (WPYW) members:

"I am always of the opinion that volunteerism involves spending one's personal time and energy for the benefit of other people in the community as a social responsibility rather than for any monetary rewards. If financial rewards are given, to me, the spirit of giving is contradicted. If one requires to be compensated financially, the person needs a job."

"Different people volunteer for different reasons. Some for passion, some for fun, some for show, and some for benefits. It is common for the volunteer organisation to provide some benefits like uniforms, meals and sometimes even allowance. There is nothing wrong with that."

"My view is towards an innate desire to serve the community. And thus feeling satisfied soon after I have helped someone or made them happy."

"We could give transport and meal allowances, but volunteers could refuse if they want to."
"It is not about benefits. But volunteers' welfare should be taken care of."

Do you agree or disagree with these comments? What are your thoughts on what volunteerism should and shouldn't be?

Understanding Public Health Issues and Corporate Responsibility.

At first glance, this may seem like a normal advert to many. However, if you were to take a closer look, it may not be.

Most of the items listed in this advert are high in carbo, sugar, calories and processed food. Similar to the layout of many marts, you can find many sweets and candies closer to checkouts?

How can Corporate Responsibility play a larger role in maintaining good health for Singaporeans? Can responsible adverts and education help to build a healthier nation?

We need to understand that going forward, healthcare cost is increasing and more proactive steps such as responsible marketing is needed. Living healthier, living longer and to enjoy life are the outcomes we hope to achieve eventually.

To me, Corporate Responsibility is manifest through the conduct its business and aims to make a positive social impact in the long-term. Let's hope that we will spend more time to strengthen this area in the future.

[/h]"For decades, transport policymakers here have grappled with the problem of ensuring a better match between taxis and passengers - across both time and space. Those of us who take taxis have had to put up with an increasingly complicated and bewildering system of surcharges in pursuit of this objective.

Now we have the technological means to solve this problem. It boggles the mind that instead of embracing these new car-sharing apps, there are those who call for more regulation - regulation that, in our context, really just amounts to the protection of incumbent firms.

Regulation may be a justifiable policy response if the market is not working well. In this instance, new digital technologies and business models have made the market work much better than it ever did before.

Consumers benefit from greater choice and convenience. Taxi drivers are not hurt to an extent that we should require the entrants to be subject to more regulations; instead, they may even benefit from the new apps.

The only losers are existing taxi companies. But regulation should not exist to protect incumbents. Neither should there be a presumption that just because an activity poses some risks to safety, regulators must step in."

An well argued piece by Donald Low. Uber and Grab are also the preferred mode for hired transport by my own family when such services are needed. They have found it more convenient and often cheaper.

When an industry has inherent inefficiencies, technology sometimes step in to disrupt industry leaders, as is the case in the taxi industry today.

"Today’s editors, who should be more independent in serving a society that seeks a plurality of views, seem to be stuck in that dark age of Singapore journalism. The worry is that censorship and self-censorship is so embedded in Singapore journalism’s DNA that even if the shackles are removed, I doubt they will know how to exercise their new-found freedom.

How sad."

Legislation was passed in an attempt to cut shopping bag wastage in the EU, coming into force just in time for the holidays. I am really interested to know if this will significantly change consumer habits (and I hope it does!). I remember being made to be more conscious about taking bags and having reusable bags with me while when living in Germany because everybody did it. Every little bit counts.

Where will Singapore and our parliament be 50, or 100s of years from now? Will we be like Westminster and endure through numerous changes?

Following the successful SG100 conference, the The Workers' Party Youth Wing (WPYW) will be carrying on a themed discussion for the next month at our weekly Friday evening Open House at The Workers' Party HQ. The theme this month will be "SG100", and I'll be there with other members this Friday 30 October from 8pm-9:30pm to discuss the topic.

Do pop by to say hi at 216-G Syed Alwi Road #02-03 if you are free! Looking forward to seeing you guys!
