SINGAPORE: The artillery shell cases from the 21-gun salute fired during the State Funeral Procession of founding Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew have been collected and will be given to individuals and organisations closely associated with him, the Prime Minister’s Office said on Thursday (Mar 17).

On Mar 29, the 21st Battalion, Singapore Artillery fired a 21-gun salute with four ceremonial 25-pounder howitzers for Mr Lee from the Padang.

The 21 artillery shell casings were subsequently collected.

"The Government has decided to present the shell casings to the eulogists at the State Funeral Service, the organisers of the State Funeral, and institutions and organisations that have been closely associated with Mr Lee," the Prime Minister's Office said in a statement.

It added that these recipients include the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF), Singapore Police Force, People’s Association, Parliament, Corrupt Practices Investigation Bureau, Housing & Development Board, National Parks Board, PUB, National Trades Union Congress, Temasek Polytechnic and Tanjong Pagar Community Club.

“A year ago our nation came together to bid Mr Lee Kuan Yew a last farewell. The week of national mourning and the State Funeral that followed were an intense and emotional experience for us all,” Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong wrote in a Facebook post on Thursday.

After the State Funeral Procession, PM Lee said he asked the SAF to collect the shell casings to be presented to people, institutions and organisations that were closely linked to Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

“My deep thanks to all of them for the roles they played in my father’s life and for their contributions to the nation,” he said.

Singapore to impose penalties for not according Lee Kuan Yew’s name with dignity and respect

In their press statement yesterday (Mar 16), Singapore’s Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) said that they will be imposing penalties for anyone who do not accord the deceased dictator Lee Kuan Yew’s name with dignity and respect. When queried by media reporters over what are the penalties, MCCY said the government would “review a need for legislation in the future”.

MCCY laid out three “broad guidelines” over the usage of Lee Kuan Yew’s name and image:

1) The name or image or likeness of Mr Lee Kuan Yew may be used for purposes of identifying with the nation, including on works of art or publications or items for charitable purposes, in accordance with law.The name or image or likeness of Mr Lee Kuan Yew may be used for purposes of identifying with the nation, including on works of art or publications or items for charitable purposes, in accordance with law.
2) The name or image or likeness of Mr Lee Kuan Yew should be accorded dignity and respect.
3) The name or image or likeness of Mr Lee Kuan Yew should not be used for commercial exploitation or be assumed or taken to indicate any kind of official endorsement of products or services.

Currently, only members of monarchies are accorded honorific protections. Thailand, Malaysia and Brunei are the few countries with government legislation protecting the names and images of their kings. With the new “guidelines”, it appears Lee Kuan Yew has been posthumously ascended to be the first king of Singapore despite calling itself a Republic democracy.

There are no existing laws protecting the past Presidents of Singapore and there is no need to as no one has ever used their names or images for commercialization or even insulted them. For Lee Kuan Yew, it is a different story as criticisms of his crimes were largely oppressed in the past. Victims of Lee Kuan Yew’s oppression have been voicing out their dissent against the former dictator. The Singapore government is hoping to charge these dissenters in an attempt to whitewash Lee Kuan Yew’s crimes.

In July last year, the Singapore government jailed a 16-year-old boy for more than 50 days for criticizing Lee Kuan Yew’s authoritarian governance in a Youtube video. As Lee Kuan Yew’s death anniversary (Mar 23) draws closer, the Singapore government has been putting in effort on propaganda to put Singapore into another week of mourning period, with memorials and commemoration events put forth by the government-controlled People’s Association.

Lee Kuan Yew was a traitor during World War 2, abetting the Japanese invaders as a translator. He later rose to power by abusing the country’s Internal Security Act laws, jailing his fellow political colleagues and ruled the country with an iron fist with him being the only Prime Minister for 31 years (1959-1990). His son, Lee Hsien Loong, is now the current Singapore Prime Minister who has been in office for 12 years and draw the highest salaries (S$2.2 million) for a politician in the world.

Organisations to put artillery shell casings on public display

Members of the public will be able to view the artillery shell casings fired during Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s State Funeral Procession at various locations in Singapore.

SINGAPORE: Institutions and organisations that have received artillery shell casings fired at a 21-gun salute during Mr Lee Kuan Yew’s State Funeral Procession will be putting them on display at various public locations in Singapore.

NATIONAL HERITAGE BOARD (NHB)
Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong, who was one of the recipients of the artillery shell casings, donated his to the NHB.
The casing will be on display at the “We Built a Nation” exhibition, which runs from Mar 23 until Oct 2, at the National Museum.

HOUSING AND DEVELOPMENT BOARD (HDB)
The shell casing given to the HDB will be displayed at the HDB Gallery – located at Basement 1 of the HDB Hub in Toa Payoh – from Thursday.

“The late Mr Lee Kuan Yew is the key driver of public housing in Singapore. His vision of a home-owning society has given Singaporeans a tangible stake in the nation. Without his vision, Singaporeans today would not have a home they can call their own, upon which they can build their family and lives. Nor would HDB have the privilege to house almost an entire nation,” said HDB CEO Dr Cheong Koon Hean.

“We are deeply honoured to be a recipient of the artillery shell casing. It will always remind us of Mr Lee’s vision and spur us to build on his legacy, to give Singaporeans better homes and better lives.”

CORRUPT PRACTICES INVESTIGATION BUREAU (CPIB)
CPIB said the shell casing it received will be on public display at its upcoming exhibition “Declassified – Corruption Matters”, to be held from Apr 7 to May 22 at The Plaza @ National Library. The exhibition charts Singapore’s anti-corruption journey and shares CPIB officers’ experiences in their fight against corruption.

“The late Mr Lee Kuan Yew knew that Singapore’s survival and success depended on keeping Singapore corruption-free and having a clean government imbued with the values of honesty and integrity,” CPIB said in a statement.
“Recognising the CPIB’s instrumental role in keeping the system clean, the late Mr Lee backed the Bureau with the resources, the legislation and the independence to carry out its work without fear or favour.”

PUB
PUB, Singapore’s national water agency, said it will display its shell casing at the Marina Barrage, as a tribute to Mr Lee’s leadership and foresight in charting the development of Singapore’s water sustainability.
More details will be announced when the casing is available for public viewing, it said.

PEOPLE’S ASSOCIATION (PA)
The artillery shell casing given to the PA was placed at its headquarters on Thursday. About 600 staff and grassroot leaders witnessed the ceremony.

Minister in the Prime Minister's office Chan Chun Sing, who is also PA's deputy chairman, said the organisation is honoured to receive the item in tribute to the late Mr Lee, who was the association’s founding chairman.

"I think this artillery casing is a very special memento that the Prime Minister has gifted to the People's Association. The People's Association is an organisation that is very close to the hearts of Mr Lee and the founding leaders," Mr Chan said.
He said the PA had played a vital role in the early years of Singapore's nation-building and the item will serve as a reminder of PA's mission.

"We hope that the shell will be a reminder to all the staff of PA, the grassroot leaders and volunteers of the mission that we have to discharge – to make sure that we continue to work hard to build a society that's cohesive, a society that is proud regardless of our backgrounds, regardless of our differences."

A letter from Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong to PA has also been put on display. Mr Lee thanked the PA in the letter for organising the community tribute sites during the week of national mourning. He also said PA and grassroot leaders did well in enabling tens of thousands of people to pay their last respects to Mr Lee Kuan Yew.

Singaporeans to have a say in Founders’ Memorial site

The Government has asked the committee tasked to conceptualise the memorial to consult the public on the two site options.

SINGAPORE: Singaporeans should have a say in where the Founders’ Memorial will be located, the Government said on Thursday (Mar 17).

On Monday, the committee tasked with conceptualising the memorial announced that it had shortlisted Fort Canning Park and the Gardens by the Bay’s Bay East Garden as two possible sites.

It recommended that the Bay East Garden be selected as it can “better bring out a forward-looking narrative, offer a more open and welcoming atmosphere, provide better accessibility and hold stronger potential for programming”.

In a press release on Thursday, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) said the Government has taken note of the committee’s recommendation, but said Singaporeans should be consulted on the two options.

“As the Founders’ Memorial will be an important landmark that will leave long lasting impact, the Government would like the Committee to consult the public and allow Singaporeans to share their views on the two site options before making a final decision,” the ministry said.
“Singaporeans can look forward to more opportunities to be involved along the entire process – from the design to the construction of the memorial,” it added.

The public can share their views through the Founders' Memorial website, MCCY said.

The government is milking the LKY effect for everything it is worth. They know LKY remains a vote puller even after death and will do anything and everything to exploit this incredible resource.

The 70% margin in the last GE was LKY's final parting gift to his son. Truly remarkable. An entire nation enthralled by One Man, One Narrative, One Vision of Past and Future.

Personally I think it is very appropriate. The shell casing is symbolic of the power and fear that he used to rule this country. Both elements are important for an artillery shell to serve it purpose in a battlefield. It also creates the right atmosphere that Singapore has been and will continue to a battlefield. It neither a dove or an olive branch.

Both Fort Canning and Garden by the Bay would not be proper. The first is a well known place of assignation from young couples to philanders and truly impropriate. The second is to new to have a link to the powerful legacy.

Any location pick must immediately be recognisable as the place most associated with the Old Man. I would highly recommend Whitely Holding Centre. No one will have doubt why the memorial is there. The second site could be the 9th hole at Istana Golf Course. This was truly his from the very beginning of his leadership and thru the years.

Pringles should do a one year anniversary commemorative special edition with sour cream. I would gift a few to the staff we discarded in last year's exercise.

I really hope his name won't be milked by both oppies and pappies for the next election. Just let him rest already.
