The Great Orchard Road Flood ( STOMP )

are they going to fire the engineers who design orchard road drainage??
and the FT who build it.

the flood came at the right time before election and seriously i believed it will prompt the minds of many citizens. Many will want to know how come suddenly we are experiencing so much problem with floods despite the fact that our govt proclaimed to spend so much on containing it and assuring us that we are flood free and our drainage system is in place to tackle these problems. The recent flooding opened up a whole new chapter and many citizens may began to have doubts in our govt and whether did they actually spent the money or it is just all talk but no action. Maybe even a possibility of cutting corners, engaging lousy contractors (with links to Familee etc) thinking nothing will happen but now all these flooding showed otherwise. Did not our Ministers proclaimed we hired experts in their various fields in their departments and how come they could not get it right? Another once in 50 years explanation is not acceptable.

Ya!!! GREAT SINGAPORE SAIL!

Will PAP come out again and blame Singaporeans for the flood? The last I heard that Singaporeans, not just government, is responsible for the oversight security in MRT depot. Mas selamat Jalan Jalan also blame Singaporeans for being complacent. Than influx of foreigners also blame Singaporeans for not having spur. What excuses will Yacoob come out this time.. Oh wait!!! they were all too busy hammering opposition town councils until they forgot the great orchard road has not been well maintained..[/COLOR]

Just watched the news in amazement.

To be fair:-

(1) The PUB Spokesperson at least sound more sincere than stupid Yacoob.
This civil servant was business-like & upfront.
They had monitored the situation & send in civil defence personnel & standby ambulances to come in to help.

Maybe heavy rain in intense 3 hr period in 2 major waves (despite all that hysterical insistence of low tide & his broken tide table, fact is: rain & flood DID happen, so kao peh similancheow ?! still insist low tide, u genius u win, happy? asshole!), all that no man can prevent. But the Civil Defence people did their best to render aid.

(2) After the rain stopped, the great Orchard Rd suckout, pumpuing out of water, clearing debris rubbish ....
who clearing the clogged drains - FOREIGN AH NEH WORKERS !
This is one time I think all fair minded S'poreans must salute the brawnwork of these foreign workers ! You think, locals will do all these tough dirty jobs as seen on TV, clearing clogged potholes & drains?

Something s very wrong somewhere with regards to the cause of the floods.

The TNP article of 'how Orchard Rd can never flood' 10 years ago - very ironic.

But the greatest ironic white elephant : Marina Barrage !

Was it Old Man or some PUB big fart who siad on its opening that they can vary the operation of the Marina Barrage to prevent floods in the city ?

NOW ?! Barrage kee lan !

Ironically, Orchard Road is under Cairnhill division of Tanjong Pagar GRC, supposedly best maintained. More ironically for those old enough to remember, Potong Pasir when under PAP was most famous for flash floods. It seem to have never happened again under Chiam See Tong.

The Presstapo has "exonerated" Marina Barrage saying that the water level at Marina Reservoir never reached a critical level. Assuming that is true, there must be some reason the water that flooded Orchard Rd and my house (incidentally) never got to MR.

My observation of the flooding is as follows. It was already raining when I awoke around 0700h. Since my area had been flood prone, I checked the drains around my house every half an hour or so from 0930h onwards. Up to about 1030h, things were actually ok.

Quite suddenly, around 1100h, my helper came into my home office screaming that water was coming into the house. The water level moved up about 30 cm in half an hour! That's very unusual.

The second unusual thing - the rain subsided to the point that it could be described as light, but the flood waters remained still - it wasn't getting anywhere. I went out to the main canal and saw that the water was indeed quite still. This went on for about half an hour.

Third unusual thing - quite suddenly, as if somebody opened a sluice gate somewhere, the water subsided within half an hour.

My "uninformed" neighbours are pointing at the badly managed efforts to redirect the flow of Rochor Canal. If MB is not to blame, my neighbours may just be right.

Something s very wrong somewhere with regards to the cause of the floods.

There is a reason for the flooding of Orchard Road, Duanwu Festival (Chinese: 端午節), also known as Dragon Boat Festival is today. Remember to give sacrifice Rice Dumpling for Duan Wu if not this nation will be Sinkapore!

Duanwu commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan. He was a loyal minister serving the King of Chu during the Warring States Period in the third century BC. Initially his sovereign favored Qu Yuan, but over time, his wisdom and erudite ways antagonized other court officials. As a result Qu Yuan was accused of trumped-up charges of conspiracy and ejected by his sovereign. During his exile, Qu Yuan composed many poems to express his anger and sorrow towards his sovereign and people.

In the year 278 B.C., at the age of 37, Qu Yuan drowned himself in the Milo River. He clasped a heavy stone to his chest and leaped into the water. Knowing that Qu Yuan was a righteous man, the people of Chu rushed to the river to try to save him. The people desperately searched the waters in their boats looking for Qu Yuan but were unsuccessful in their attempt to rescue him. Every year the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated to commemorate this attempt at rescuing Qu Yuan.

When it was known that Qu Yuan had been lost forever, the local people began the tradition of throwing sacrificial cooked rice into the river for their lost hero. However, a local fisherman had a dream that Qu Yuan did not get any of the cooked rice that was thrown into the river in his honour. Instead the fish in the river were eating the rice. Thus, the locals decided to make zongzi to sink into the river in the hopes that it would reach Qu Yuan's body. The following year, the tradition of wrapping the rice in bamboo leaves to make zongzi began.

Just throw all your Rice Dumpling along Orchard road, River.

The heavy downpour that flooded Orchard Road earlier
in this morning continues to wreak havoc in other parts
of Singapore.
STOMPer sawthetlynn saw this fallen tree on top of
two vehicles near Tai Seng MRT station, while another
STOMPer spotted fallen trees on the CTE.

Said the STOMPer:

"This happened on Irving Place road, near
Tai Seng MRT station this morning.
"2 cars were hit by this tree.
"I was returning from my office when I saw the
entire road blocked by this fallen tree.
It is completely inaccessible now.
"Nobody was injured as the drivers were not in the car."
Fellow STOMPer lordofkatong said:
"Spotted these trees that fell on the
CTE this morning as I was driving past."
