Ng Kok Song And Tharman, Would You Care To Explain?
NKS and Tharman have been engaging in a slagging match trying to outdo each other for “independence”. NKS has been suggesting to Singaporeans that because he has never belonged to a political party, he is the only independent candidate.
But NKS did not tell the Singapore public that his son-in-law is a Managing Director at GIC! This obviously puts NKS in a conflict of interest position as the President has the duty to safeguard the reserves. Why did NKS not reveal this fact to Singaporeans instead of continuously professing his “independence”?
And it is a well known fact that Avanda, the fund which NKS is executive Chairman of, started off with huge investments from the Singapore Labour Foundation, Temasek and GIC. If these entities were to pull their funds from Avanda, will that not lead to a significant drop in the value of Avanda?
So NKS is talking nonsense when he says that he is an “independent”candidate.
And I was also very surprised to read in messages circulating this morning that one of Tharman’s sons is/was with the Department of Reserves and Investment Directorate Reserves Policy of the Ministry of Finance. So he is /was obviously involved in some way or another with the management of our country’s reserves. If that is true, why did Tharman also not disclose this to the Singapore public when he declared his candidacy because I view this as a conflict of interest with his role as President.
More intriguingly, TOC reported that between 10am to 1240 pm today, the son’s position was changed to the Social Programmes Directorate Education & Manpower. Why this sudden change? Tharman should explain.
Tan Kin Lian has no conflict of interest problems. None of his children work with the government.
