Welcome to Singapore Edition. Each week we bring you insights into one of Asia’s most dynamic economies. If you haven’t yet, please sign up here.

This week, Justina T. Lee looks at plans to preserve the island’s biodiversity, Marcus Wong watches the Trump effect filter into the local markets, and Alfred Cang wonders why there are so many property agents.

Swamp Fever

Ten years ago, on Jan. 19, 2015, the National Parks Board gave its first lecture in a program that would transform Singapore’s approach to maintaining its green spaces, pivoting from a policy based on preservation and provision of public spaces to a systematic attempt to restore the island’s natural environment and biodiversity.

The latest chapter in that journey was announced this month with a plan to create a 72.8 hectare mangrove park in Mandai, along a stretch of the northern shore close to the existing Sungei Buloh nature reserve. Due to open in 2028, it would be Singapore’s third-largest park. NParks said it will also construct and enhance three other parks in the west of Singapore.

One.85 Big Prawn Mee might not be the newest on the Bedok block, but the word’s been spreading lately. Since opening in 2024, they have grown an impressive fan following for their huge portions, available until late at night.

The trio of founders are couple Roger and Erina, and their friend Monica, who opened the stall due to their love for traditional prawn mee. Inspired by the rich flavours, they have vowed to uphold the dish’s heritage by offering authentic, high-quality prawnmee made from scratch.

Everything is done with intention, down to sourcing the ingredients. Monica visits the wet market daily to select the best prawns and cooks all the dish’s components – even the garnish and shallot oil – herself. All the work the trio puts in is proof of their dedication to the craft and genuine love for the dish.

The first thing you’d notice is, of course, their big prawns. Their Prawn Mee (S$6.50/S$10) contains kangkong, beansprouts, pork lard and fried shallots. Choose between bee hoon or yellow noodles with rich broth, cooked with prawn heads.

Not only does the stall sell prawn mee, but they also sell Pork Ribs Mee (S$6.50/S$10). Other than that, there’s another option to add Pork Ribs (S$1.50) or Pork Skin (S$1) alongside your main.

Their signature is the Jumbo Big Prawn Mee(S$13.50/S$20). However, if you want to go all out, order the Colossal Big Prawn Mee (S$28/S$36) and share it within a group. Just look at that serving!

A nation of sheep deserves a government of wolves. Old sheep too, they are resources that can be exploited.
What is the difference between a govt that extracts $$$ from the people in return for protection and the Mafia? Aren't they both collecting $$$ to ensure no harm comes to the people they are watching over?

Seniors dont need to work. They help organise business opportunities due to extensive contacts.

But this PAP smear use money for useless things like make the country more crowded instead of making it like Switzerland

Force children to study useless subjects

Serve NS that gets people fired and no more need to pay taxes

Minimum wage is much lower than housing price

These are actually the people who obediently listen to LKY and followed his thoughts and toiled and help grew SG to what it is now…and this is they payback.

LKY was a disciple of his Sith Lord Henry Kissinger, and a comrade of Klaus Schwab.

You can know a man by the company he keeps. LKY is trash, but brainwashing works magic upon gullible minds.

Our overrated, overpaid and overhyped politicians are completely clueless. Those from the public sector are working like when they were in the Civil Service; taking pay for doing jack shit.

You're still believing that the PAP govt is some kind of a benevolent parent figure, looking out for the people's interests and 'protecting' them.

Try again.

I notice that my earlier post has gone entirely over your head i.e. you missed my point completely. LOL!

So, you're asking "who did they vote for," as if that's the reason these elderly are struggling?

Whether they voted for PAP or opposition parties, their plight is the same. The system as a whole has failed them. Opposition voters didn’t magically escape the cost of living, and their seniors aren’t living in luxury either.

The real issue is the lack of adequate support for ALL elderly, regardless of political preference.
And that's why you should not reply.
