Survival, Not Leisure: What Keeps Our Seniors Working?

Let’s be real: many elderly Singaporeans aren’t working because they want to, but because they have to. While we often hear about active aging and the joy of staying productive, the truth is that much of our elderly population is slogging it out due to financial necessity. If they could afford it, most would likely be enjoying leisurely activities like traveling, playing mahjong, or spending time with their families, not working long hours in physically demanding jobs or “exercising” according to disgraced ex-Speaker Tan Chuan-Jin.

The reality is that a lot of seniors simply don’t have enough retirement savings. Many spent their working years prioritizing family needs, paying for mortgages, children’s education, or daily expenses, often leaving little for themselves. By the time they hit retirement age, their CPF balances aren’t enough to sustain them for the rest of their lives, especially with rising costs.

And let’s talk about the cost of living. Singapore is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Healthcare, food, utilities, it all adds up quickly. Even with government subsidies or CPF Life payouts, many elderly find it hard to make ends meet. For those without family support or additional savings, continuing to work isn’t just an option; it’s a necessity.

The idea that seniors work because they “want to stay active” often feels like sugarcoating. Of course, there are some who genuinely enjoy keeping busy, but for the majority, it’s about survival. If you gave them the choice between slogging it out in a cleaning job or enjoying their golden years in leisure, I think we all know what they’d choose.

We need to stop gaslighting this situation and face the facts. Many elderly Singaporeans are working because they have no choice, not because they enjoy it. If we want to call ourselves a progressive society, we should be focusing on creating stronger support systems so that no senior has to work just to get by. Let’s give them the dignity of a real retirement.

TCJ said : The seniors collect cardboard for exercise.

It’s hard to forget the tone-deaf comment by the disgraced ex-Speaker, who claimed elderly cardboard collectors were “exercising.”

Let’s call it what it is.. an appalling attempt to sugarcoat exploitation. These seniors aren’t collecting cardboard under the hot sun for fitness or fun; they’re doing it because they have no choice. Earning a measly 50 cents/kg of cardboard is exploitation, plain and simple, treating them as near-free labor while they struggle to survive.

If we’re talking about “exercise,” let’s be real, a true retiree with financial security wouldn’t be out there hauling cardboard under the scorching sun. She’d be attending her Yoga or Pilates class at Pure Fitness, enjoying air-conditioned comfort and post-class smoothies.

Instead of whitewashing the plight of these elderly workers, we should be addressing the systemic failures that force them into such situations. In a nation as developed as Singapore, no senior should be breaking their backs in their twilight years. It’s time to stop glossing over their struggles and start creating real solutions to ensure they can live with dignity, not desperation.

Ask these elderlies who they voted for.

Then you'll be glad to know they asked for it and deserved it.

Jiakliaobee old fucks of course need to work, otherwise why waste money feeding them?

You die your own biz, not happy please fuck off.

So, you're asking "who did they vote for," as if that's the reason these elderly are struggling?

Whether they voted for PAP or opposition parties, their plight is the same. The system as a whole has failed them. Opposition voters didn’t magically escape the cost of living, and their seniors aren’t living in luxury either.

The real issue is the lack of adequate support for ALL elderly, regardless of political preference.

The TCJ n her lover how, lol, busy fucking, think puppies now among them must be fucking wildly ,lol, so to make job easy they say old ppl enjoy working lol

TCJ used to earn enough in one year to feed the average S'porean family for life. What does he know about the struggles of our seniors?

I disagree. They themselves failed themselves.
Since they continued to vote the same shit over and over again, that means they want the same over and over.

The million dollar salary adulterer TCJ said old folks chose to work, under scorching sun, because they like "ExercisIng".

Strong work ethic. LKY himself worked to his 90s. To his dying breathe he was salaried not pensioned. A shiny example to us all.

The opposition parties are equally hopeless and useless

UK businesses have run down a mountain of cash reserves built up during the pandemic, leaving them more likely to cut jobs when Labour’s tax hikes come into effect in April.

Firms added over £150 billion ($185 billion) to their savings when the economy was placed under Covid restrictions, thanks to a mix of loans and large-scale public-sector support. Corporate coffers reached almost double the value of their quarterly wage bills, according to a Bloomberg analysis of official data.

For decades, Hong Kong’s “big four” property dynasties have been viewed as cash-rich bastions of stability. A crisis of confidence at New World Development Co. is now putting that notion to the test.

In the span of a week, New World proposed pledging $15 billion of prized properties for loans, fended off debt restructuring concerns and saw its bond prices go into freefall. The developer has changed its chief executive officer twice in two months, including the surprise sidelining of a family scion.
