Smoking

Me neither?, my own mother smoke, my uncle smoke....there are smokers in the family. I even roll cigarettes for my mum, before she discovered Rothman of Pall Mall & Benson & Hedges..even fill up pipes with tobacco for my uncle..empty his pipe..fill hid tobacco pouch...

I have never, ever, touch a cigarette or tobacco in my life..and have always wonders, why people smoke?
I just wonder whether it's like a hunger pang or a thirst. Or is it more like a drug addict needing a drug or someone suffering from intense pain needing a pain killer.
Whatever it feels like, what I'm saying is that eating too much, drinking too much or even taking drugs only have bad effects on the person himself, unless he does something later.
But the act of smoking itself causes discomfort to others who find cigarette smoke irritating.

it depends on situation but i believe u have to try one out urself to actually understand the reason.
I tried one when I was a teenager and ended up coughing and smoking. Have hated cigarette smoke eversince.
That's why I'm trying to understand the obsession.

what you mean some even smoked in the lifts ? They ALL smoke in the lifts, those you saw not smoking did not have an urge to smoke at that moment
I'm simply saying what I saw - some smoked.
Whether the rest who didn't smoke didn't feel like smoking, I don't know and don't care.

I am a smoker and a chained one too. It's not an obsession, it's just a habit and with it an addiction to nicotine. The addiction can be stopped but habits die-hard.

Honestly I dont know how irritating tobacco smoke is to non smokers. But just because smokers are already a minority and with banning here and there we are already pushed to a corner, isnt that enough. It's a free world, I believe smokers do deserves the rights to that freedom too.
I can understand the addiction, but not the habit. Habits which are bad for your health, costs money and irritating to others, should be stopped.
Cigarette smoke is very irritating to the non smoker, in Singapore, it's much better than elsewhere.

Why can't they suck a sweet? :)

Sweets cause tooth decay and high blood sugar level that can result in many serious diseases ranging from diabetes to hypertension.

Can't agree w/ you more.

Smoking is a habit just like cheonging, PCC, watching porn, surfing SBF, gambling, swearing, KPKBing about life in Sinkapore......
My point is that smoking is the only habit that can cause distress to others without you having to do anything extra.
The other habits may be harmful only to yourself.

At least it doesn't cause harm or irritation to others.
That's my main point, that smoking in public in itself is harmful and irritating to others.

Vehicles emitting smoke. Chinese funerals or religious functions emitting smoke also irritates and are harmful to others.

My point is, smoke in designated smoking areas and don't litter the butts. Just like urinating in a toilet, don't urinate in a lift.

Vehicles emitting smoke - is a great and succinct example of the world leaders that doesn't care. Yes smoking issues to the fore is just smokescreen to the obvious car pollution. All the political talk is bullshit. The world is made up of Evil people vs Good. Clean energy technology is just waiting for the last batch of Evil baby boomers to die off.

There is one thing you forget, sinkieness is a habit too.

As said before habits die-hard, it'd all in the mind. Sometime the mind controls you and sometimes you controlled the mind.

When you had a habit, nothing matters more than anything else, instant gratifcations take precedence. Honestly I do not know how to make you understand. Most of us started it as a habit and subsequently if became a lifestyle if not a culture.

I do understand habits that are hard to break.
Like the other guy said, cheonging, eating, drinking, golfing, chewing gum, sucking sweets, etc etc are all habits which some people can't break as well.
But all these habits, unlike smoking, don't cause irritation and distress to people around.
If a smoker is concious of this and always smokes in the "designated" areas, great.
But many are not as considerate.
I don't try to judge the smokers' addicition or habit, or why he started or why he can't stop or the disbenefits or the lifestyle or the social reasons or whatever, but I take objection to their inconsideration for the non smokers around.

We may be descendants of homo sapiens but that does not necesssary means we behave alike. There'll always people that different or behave differently.

I am a smoker, I dont feel irritated when people smokes around me. In yesteryears when smokers are a majority, no one seems to be complaining this much about irritations.

You are disgruntled by some smokers' inconsideration, that I may be able to understand but I cant second you on your objections, it's just not right and I cant do that

One word: ADDICTION.

Why can't they suck a sweet? :)

These mentally blocked smokers will start to question your motives. they'll start with why not target on other vices like gambling, drinking etc etc. I have no idea why they dont want to deal with their problems first.

Honestly, they refuse to admit that they are addicted and too weak to break the addiction. That's why they like to use euphemisms like "habit", "way of life", "culture", etc.

Only a minority of people who gamble and drink are addicted but by definition most if not all smokers are addicted.
