Re: Singapore Flyer halted

big wheel keep on turning ...
proud mary keep on burning ...
rolling, rolling, rolling on the river ...

hahaha excellent quote.

big wheel keep on turning - the flyer spinning
proud mary keep on burning - something keeps on burning
rolling on the river - the wheel ends up rolling in the river (gosh)

aircon system stopped? so every single capsule has an attached independent aircon unit or the cold air is pumped from a central source to all the capsules.

You guys really love to bash Singapore.
You guys simply love to see Singapore fall and bite the dust. Why so?
Why so harsh on the Singapore's Flyer?
Have a Blessed Christmas tomorrow.

the flyer is an element of the PAP. just like the SAF, SPF, NDP and all the GLCs.
the very sight and mention of the PAP brings hate, anger, vengeance and rage among many of us here. Me inclusive.

any accident involving any element of the PAP would bring great joy, excitement, and appreciation to many here.

i was just hoping few of the capsule catches fire while the wheel itself is jammed stuck.

now Class Action to SUE Ah Beng FLYER $25 Million!

HUAT AH!

This is the time to SUE another world record sum out of the Ah Beng Flyer.

Not just for 173 trapped. But for those who had booked ticket for X'mas eve and X'mas day.

Now the the world knows that Ah Beng Flyers' business is doing really very badly even on the eve of X'mas eve 23 Dec 2008 when it fucked up and stopped there were only 173 passengers at that peak business hour of Ah Beng Wheel. The full capacity is supposed to be 700 over persons.

It's business is so bad that at such a peak time in prime holiday season, it was 80% EMPTY.

Just like the PAP GOVT - empty vessel !

Terrible Feng Shui Confirmed Ass Luck also Confirmed

Terrible Feng Shui Confirmed Ass Luck also Confirmed. It is a double confirmation.

The wheel is a bicycle wheel in shape with those bike wheel spokes.

The 3 tomb stones made entire Singapore island a grave yard, HDB flats all became smaller tomb stones.

The bicycle attempt to cycle through the grave yard but it got stuck and could not get through. It is a bike wheel spinning at the same spot all the time moving no where.

The PAP learned that it is bad Feng Shui and they had switched the direction of their bike wheel's spin. But no use also. It is still spinning at the same spot and goes no where.

Why a bike wheel spins at the same spot?

Because the biker fell to ground! Bike had over-turned! Wheel still spinning but going no where.

BAD FENG SHUI! BAD LUCK!

Re: Singapore Flyer Breakdowns.....Maybe The Real Story Behind......

Bank loan about S$170 million, interest charges about S$14 million per year.
Equity about S$70 million,based on 10%,they need S$7 millin a year.

Assuming running expense of S$1 million per month, and depn of about $20 million a year.
So total expected receipt should be around S$41 million p.a.= 4 million per month

With 173 passengers (700 passengers max) only at Peak Period paying $40 each =$6,920

Lets say 10 hrs per day $69,200

30 days a month $2,076,000 per month.

BRO...you are right they are losing BIG MONEY.

Lucky I am not running the show or I sure burn the wheel and claim insurance.

The rescue was totally disastrous!!!! How can they allow 'passengers' to climb the tension rods???? There was also no 'emergency' food compartments in each capsule. Rescue personnel actually have to bring food & drinks to each capsule, & they delivered 'coke' instead of water despite the trapped passengers waited many hours for it. What a shame!!!!

Obviously they are not prepared for 'emergency' case & have no contingency plan at all. Their performance is worse than the India forces in recent 'Mumbai' case. The management ought to step down.

What a disgrace to Singapore!!!! Singapore is trying to put itself as a top destination for travel, & yet we are using such primitive methods to rescue the trapped passengers. Really sympathise with those trapped passengers.
What is the point of having the tallest flyer????

Chinese saying 'HAO KAN BU HAO CHI'.

its odd...when I first heard it. Consider these:

4. Of the people trapped, only a handful were rescued via abseiling, the majority of the victims have to wait till power restored. Why? Not enough equipment or don't know how to rescue? On what priority did the authorities take to make rescue ? All foreigners get rescued first or only those that are trapped in the lower levels get rescued?

5. And lastly, the most glaring point is - the breakdown occured at 4 plus, rescue started only 8 plus. What happened during this 4 hours? Getting approval from higher authorities? Or wait till ERP over before rescue vehicles can come in to deploy personel? Or SCDF needs to activate their reservist (2 hours?)

4. abseiling is safer and more secure for the stranded at lower heights, where there are no obstructions or other gondolas in the way. the last thing you want to have is getting the passenger entangled among the spokes of the giant wheel. it is much safer for carriages or gondolas at greater heights to wait for power to be restored, so they can be brought to lower heights or a position where passengers can safely disembark. staying in the cars or carriages is probably the best and safest alternative, if the integrity of the entire structure is not threatened or coming apart.

5. it takes a while to troubleshoot, diagnose, and pinpoint the immediate problem when it's control or power-related. the root cause will not be known until sometime later. most likely, it involves a call to tech support of the local agent/supplier/integrator and is subsequently escalated to expert technicians and engineers of the original manufacturer, who are almost always overseas and in a different time zone. mean time to repair (mttr) for such unique and/or one-off complex systems is typically 4 hours by phone support and 8 hours by having an expert on site.

all in all, singaporeans should not be complaining (and b!tching) about delays and discomfort. it's part of murphy's law, disaster awareness and the notion that life is not always rosy and smooth. 4 hours delay, and everyone kpkb. what a nation of whimps! over here, the snowstorm caused 23 hours delay in travel schedules, and folks are still braving the elements and biding their time, stuck at airports, bus depots and railway stations. not a whine.

it's time for singapore to shut up, grow up and learn from disasters.

A very objective report from the ST. It acknowledges the fact on numerous occasions that the London Eye is far superior when it comes to safety features.

That's what I admire so much about Singapore. There is a high degree of transparency in all aspects of the country's governance.

Flyer stays shut, probe starts.
Questions raised about safety procedures

THE Singapore Flyer is likely to stay shut until at least the New Year as investigations get underway into what caused the six-hour breakdown on Tuesday which required rescuers to lower 11 stranded passengers to the ground by rope.

On Wednesday, tourists and locals hoping for a sky-high view of Singapore from the world's largest observation wheel were turned away as the Flyer stayed shut by order of the Singapore Police Force.

The Flyer requires a public entertainment licence to operate. As the licensing authority, the police said they will allow operations to resume only after the Flyer's structural and mechanical systems are certified safe by an internationally recognised body.

Police are also investigating whether any of the licensing conditions were breached, although at this time 'there is no evidence to suggest that the incident was deliberate'.

Working with the Singapore Civil Defence Force, the Flyer's management and independent experts, police investigations will look into how the problem occurred, how it can be prevented and what measures can put in place to enhance passenger safety.

Senior management from the Ministry of Home Affairs will oversee the investigations, said the police statement. It added: 'It is premature at this stage to say how long this process will take.'

The Flyer's general manager Steven Yeo added: 'At this point in time, we are not able to tell you but it is unlikely to be ready by New Year.'

Flyer officials and engineers from the builders Mitsubishi Heavy Industries were on the scene looking into how a fire in the control room on the third floor of the complex led to a short-circuit that brought the wheel to a grinding halt.

One question many passengers had was whether winching them down to the ground was the best way to rescue them. In Britain, the London Eye is designed such that it can be turned manually by staff, even if the back-up power fails.

Mr Yeo said the bigger Flyer is not designed for such movement. The company hired Dive Marine to provide rescue services. Rescue drills were conducted before and after the Flyer opened in February.

'We did two training sessions and carried out an assessment so our men are familiar with the Flyer,' said Mr Sean Tan, 33, Dive Marine's rope access division manager. Dive Marine has suggested that first-aid kits as well as food and water supplies be stored in each capsule, as is the case in the London Eye.

Mr Yeo said they had discussed this a few weeks ago but it was 'unfortunate' that the measures were not put in place before Tuesday's incident. He said: 'The fortunate thing about Singapore is that the weather is actually quite mild and we don't have the type of problems which London would have.'

The rescuers also propose obtaining devices that will automatically lower a person in a rope harness, instead of having to do this manually.Mr Yeo said they will look into what extra measures are needed.

Despite four stoppages in 10 months, the Singapore Tourism Board 'expects the impact of this incident on Singapore's overall appeal as a destination to be limited over the longer term', according to the director for cluster development, Ms Jeannie Lim.
