SAWASDEE KRUP - Welcome to Thailand

Thanks for the encouragement young man. I'm not that energetic to travel anymore. When my last leaf drops, the ground is here, the ground of my root.

You always have choices, Thailand is really good for retirement. Aside from Thailand, there are also other choices, don't give up. The only time we should give up is when the last nail on the coffin is hammered in. By that time, no one, including yourself can do anything much about it.

As someone who is thinking of retiring in LOS, the ED visa route is useful in seeing if I can pick up Thai painlessly :)
With age it gets harder to learn new languages:(

Can someone with an Ed visa buy property:confused:

If you have a retirement VISA can you employ an Indonesian maid:confused: I have a little knowledge of bahasa melayu & zero knowledge of Thai. If I decide to stay in LOS I'll probably need to hire someone to help out:o

If you're aged above 50, the retirement visa suggested by Chonburifc is the most convenient if you want a visa. If you don't need the legitimacy of a visa, anybody wanting to can enter Thailand and live happily ever after, provided you can speak Thai, look like Thai and act like Thai. And of course, provided you have the money. That disqualifies all Caucasians, i.e. farang. Note that Malays and Indians can do it too. There're Malay and Indian Thais abound and around. Farang will never be considered Thai. They can stay if they have the means but will always be considered what Americans call resident aliens.

The tricky part is about learning how to speak Thai. Classes are useless or at least very slow as far as I'm concerned. Immerse in it for a few weeks and you'll get it faster than a few months of classes. Reading and writing can be learnt from a kindergarten chart. It's just a a 44-letter alphabet with vowel and tone marks.

Ram, think you highlighted an important point. The word is 'blend in'. It's much easier for Asians to assimilate into the local community. You won't stand out in a crowd and everyone will think you are a local provided you don't open your mouth. :)

wuqi, well said. There are many choice for retirement destination and all depend on your lifestyle. My first choice is in fact not LOS. :D

johnny, don't worry about age. I know a 65 yo Russian grandmother and a few more senior farangs learning Thai. The Russian grandmother learn because her Thai/Russian grandchildren can only speak Thai.

For properties, foreigners are not allowed to own landed properties but you can own condominium units. It has nothing to do with the VISA. You can even buy a Thai condo with a tourist visa.

There are no restriction on hiring of local maids. For hiring of Indonesia maids in LOS, think this is a little tricky as foreign maids in LOS requires a work permit, which is much harder to obtain than ED/Retirement VISA. But there are ways to overcome this.;)

alamak isn't that obvious? A white person wouldn't be able to blend into an asian country just like a non east asian wouldn't be able to blend into japan for eg. an caucasian can amazingly blend into a country like russian though.

Why can indians blend into thailand though?

This should be re labeled as the "Living in Thailand" thread to compete with the 700+ pages of the "Living in JB" thread.

Malays and Indians have been in Thailand since the founding of Thailand. Three of the southern provinces were actually Malay states. You should know it well since it's been in the news in recent years. In Phuket, the most famous soi is named Soi Bangla. Phuket was founded by Indian silk and cloth traders and tailors first before incorporated into Thailand by geography and politics. Even in Bangkok today, most clothiers and tailors are Indian Thais. How hard is it to blend into?

Bangala and indians are different though but let's leave that aside is it true bangla rd is named after bangalas? bangala is a nick name.

Hi Grinfreely, Here's some differences between ED VISA and Retirement VISA. For ED-VISA, you need to pay the school fees for subsequent yearly renewal. There is also a limit for for ED VISA (maximum of 10 years). And most important, for ED VISA, you are required to attend lessons at the school that sponsor your ED VISA application.

For retirement VISA, you need to be 50 and above and proof of THB 800,000 in your bank account 3 months prior to application. This is a one time process. Subsequent years are just yearly extension and there's no limit to the number of years you can stay in LOS with such retirement VISA. So in short, you save on the annual 'school fee'. The yearly extension is cheaper compared to the school fee. As with any other VISA, you are not allowed to work with any type of VISA without a valid work permit.

The reason why most go for ED-VISA is because it is the fastest and easiest to obtain.

Not too familiar with Phuket. Maybe bro difter can comment on Phuket. For Pattaya, a good sea view apartment (50-90 sqm) condo unit can cost anything from THB 1.2 million to THB 5 million. Have lots of brochures and catalog for Pattaya properties, will post some pics soon.

As for retirement location, my preference is the upcountry. :D As I am more keen on gardening and farming stuff.

The good thing about retiring in Phuket or Pattaya is you will never be a stranger as the foreigners:Thai ratios is high in these places. On the negative part, retirement in these places can get expensive depending on your hobbies and lifestyle.

Here's some advertisement from latest Pattaya's Real Estate Magazine.

Hi chonburifc, thanks for the detailed info and the pics! Good to know that alternatives are available. Do you how much does the yearly extension of retirement visa cost roughly?

Bangala and indians are different though but let's leave that aside is it true bangla rd is named after bangalas? bangala is a nick name.

There are many road/street/district/river that has the prefix Bang. Some well known ones are:

1. Bangrak
2. Bangkhen
3. Bangkapi
4. BangLampoo
5. BangSaen
6. Bangkapong (river name)
7. Bangla

All above are using the long vowel 'A' For example, Bangla in Thai will be pronounce as BAANG LAA.

When refering to Bangladesh/Bangladeshi, the Thai pronounce Bangla as BANG KLA (short, long). The street name should be pronounce as BAANG LAA (long, long). (Double AA means long vowel, whereas single A means short vowel)

The other commonly use street/road/district name will be BAAN which means home.

Hey thanks for this info. This means that they didn't name that rd bangla rd after those smelly bangalas. Ram damn cock man.

Most of these visas are process by third party visa/legal/accounting firms but should be around THB 9,000 per year for retirement visa extension. Will confirm the official cost (without the markup) again tomorrow.:)

Still learning Thai and hope my Thai teacher did not BS me regarding the long and short vowel. Soi Bangla is written as บางลา (both long A vowel) whereas Bangla as in Bangladesh/Bangladeshi is written as บังคลา (Short vowel follow by long vowel). The difference is probably due to the poor romanization but when pronounce in Thai, it is different.

There are also a few quite information website you can find. Thai Visa Dot Com is one of them. Also do look for a few firms/consultants and always insist on full refund if application not successful. :)

Thanks, that seem a reasonable sum. It is good to know to keep in view.

Nah that's not important. What's important is that rd didn't derive its name from those bloody bangelshis but from something else.

This is what ram the supposedly know it all was saying. They named the rd bangla rd after ppl from bangaldesh. Sounds stupid if they actually named the rd bangla after those bangalas cos bangala is just an informal thing locals say about these bangala ppl.

Don't need to compete la. Sabai sabai is good enough here la Sam.

Jah for your info there are many indians and sikhs who has been here so long they no longer speak their own dialects as they speak only Thai at home however they did not abandon their religion. You find many of these in Sukhumvit road restaurants. I mean I had seen many many old couples in restaurants speaking Thai. Guess they have been here a long long time.

There are also a few quite information website you can find. Thai Visa Dot Com is one of them. Also do look for a few firms/consultants and always insist on full refund if application not successful. :)

I am still in Kaohsiung back tomorrow night. Been very busy but fruitful here these 3 days.

Chonburifc I think you are the most inside insider so better we ask you than check in Thai Visa website as this is catered more to farangs.

:D:D:D you are attracting them to come in here to fight you :D:D:D

Go to Phuket and see for yourself.

you talk what cock? Did they name that rd in phuket after the bangalas? Yes or no? Obviously not.

Actually even if they did there's nothing to be proud of. Bangala isn't the proper term to call someone from that fucking country next to india, it's just what locals call them cos it's easier to pronounce.

I admire thailand for putting their thai culture first. You stay in thailand you speak thai. Period. Ok i'm not going to compare this with singapore but even for china i feel that china ppl aren't as protective of their culture unlike the thais.

Anyway they didn't name that rd after any bangala actually indians only influenced thailand via a proxy that is cambodia they didn't do it directly and that's merely cultural. Chinese are totally different however. A thai king king thaksin was actually a pure chinese that brought thailand to heights of glory. Anyone wants to dispute this? Pls state so.

As for those kelings not happy with me why can they dispute them? They want to claim glory that they don't deserve? I'm not even standing up for chinese. Look at that thread where someone commented that chinese ppl treat each other like shit and i didn't say anything.
