remember these places ?

Gone !

My two favorite childhood playgrounds were Wonderland @ Kallang and New World @ Jalan Besar.

The A&W and KFC outside on Mountbatten side were delicious too. Sigh, those were the days, thought they'd never end, but they did end, we grew up and moved on.

Yah, A&W was ... but, why did they move out of Sinkiesland ? Why so drastic ?

Dear A&W,

Ever since you pulled out of Singapore many years ago, poor Singaporeans have to go all the way to other cities like Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur and Batam in order to satisfy our cravings. How can you be so heartless to deny us of curly fries, root beer float, coney dogs, and ice cream waffle?

Someone, please bring A&W back to Singapore!

(To any potential investors who might be interested in bringing A&W restaurant back to Singapore, 5 million Singaporeans will be eternally grateful to your company.)

I know you didn’t do well due to the intense competition from rival fast food restaurants, but hey, everyone deserves a second chance. Just look at how Wendy’s, Domino’s Pizza, and Dunkin’ Donuts have made a comeback in Singapore. You can do it too!

Okie, obviously emotional appeals do not work on you. Otherwise how can you explain the fact that plenty of petitions to bring A&W back to Singapore failed? I shall try another method. A&W, you better come back to Singapore. Otherwise, I’ll boycott you when I go overseas.

A&W Y U NO COME BACK SINGAPORE?

I remember the good old advert song that went...every Amco tells a story, every Amco tells a a story in style.

There was a a record store opposite Cost Plus. Original records and cassettes only, no pirates. They always posted and updated the Billboard charts every week on the wall. Me and schoolmates when passing by always went up there to check out what were the top ten songs and top ten albums of the week, then went to New World to buy from pirates. :D

Yes! I remember that shop. Later you join the SPF and you went after those pirates?? :D

Re: Where Is It ?

2 Singapore icons The National Theatre and Van Cleef Aquarium, places I had been before they were torned down. National Theatre was the venue that hosted the Asean Cultural Show which fascinated me and Van Cleef was a place for kids to view exotic aquatic animals, a wonderful experience.

Re: Where Is It ?

Nat Theatre was where the pop groups would perform when they came....eg rolling stones, tremeloes, middle of the road.

Nowadays they usually perform at the indoor stadium or expo venues.

That's true bro.

My dad used to bring us out to eat at Rasa Singapura. The food was not too bad at all, although I cannot remember any outstanding dishes.

Re: Where Is It ?

there also used to be an open air makan place near and between where the Cable and Wireless building is and the old Sinkiepoor Poly.

We used to go there and have dinner when my dad got his salary at the end of the month.

This is just further down from Clifford Pier along Shenton Way.

Re: Where Is It ?

One of the best dark carrot cake was in Rasa Singapura. The chap was middle aged, quiet and hardworking. His first stall was in Chinatown which he operated late in the night. When started in Rasa, he would continue with his original stall way past midnight.

He was murdered and believed to be due to money lending. Sad.

Re: Where Is It ?

As a child I was often brought to the beach to play with the sand and I used to look out to the sea at Bedok. Memories of the picturesque kelongs on calm waters with the sun setting on the horizon as the background and the sound of the waves beating the shore, those were good memories.

Re: Where Is It ?

yes ...quite a few kelongs along the bedok and marine parade areas. I even went to one to spend the night there fishing with my dad and his colleagues

circa 1964.

I recall the stalls there were specially selected. Meaning, the best of the best food there only. I remember the goreng pisang stall, Lim Kee. Temasek Beer Gdn just next to it. Heard William Scorpion sang there.

Gosh!, you remember those concerts, Christies, Marmalade, Bee Gees, middle of the road, yucks!, "where you mother gone ( repeat), repeat...wowee! chirpy, chirpy cheep cheep" and their Beautiful Sunday sung in so many languages and dialects make me cringe!. Sam Hui Concert, the girls shouting "SAM, SAM, SAM ( not the current SBF Sam!), and banging the car carrying Sam to the venue.

The afternoon rock or pop concert, "Black Dog Bone" etc and the various CULTURAL SHOWS, was it Count Basie I attnened his concert there, the youngest audience at that time, amongst the sea of adults ( Free ticket) that started my love for Jazz music.

Who can forget Rasa Singapura, it is where Tanglin Mall, Tudor whatever is, the Indian Rojak Stall from Bencoolen Street, Kueh Pati, I think, need to verufy, the first stall to offer that hand made chee cheong Fun with pawns filling, mushrooms. The Sugar Cane stall branch, Lau Goh Carrot cake from People's Park Complex Hawker's Centre, a branch. Was there a "nghoh hiang' stall too?

Of of the brothers that operated the two Lau Goh Carrot Cake, I think it was the main stall at People's Park was murdered, it is, or was it still one of the unsolved crime, maybe Ram would know about this.
