SINGAPORE: Ballot papers and other documents used in the Punggol East by-election on January 26 this year will be destroyed on July 27.
The Elections Department said this is in accordance with the Parliamentary Elections Act.
Under the Act, ballot papers and other documents used in the election will be sealed and retained in safe custody for a period of six months after which they will be destroyed unless otherwise directed by order of the President.
This is to ensure secrecy of the vote.
On the day of their destruction, the sealed boxes containing ballot papers and other documents used will be transported from the Supreme Court, where they have been kept in safe custody, to the Tuas South Incineration Plant to be incinerated.
The Elections Department said candidates who wish to witness the proceedings should inform the Elections Department by July 25.
