13-05-05: One Day Family Trip

Around 300 Punggol East residents participated in the One Day Family Tour, which took place on Sunday, 5 May 2013. The tour – a first of many of such tours to come for residents - was organised and led by volunteers from the Punggol East Constituency Committee.

The journey started off with a visit to the Kranji Countryside. Residents had the chance to see how crops such as wheatgrass, cactus and aloe vera are grown by high-technology farms in Singapore during the tour of Kin Yan Agrotech. During the visit to the Qian Hu fish farm, residents were also treated to ‘fish spa’ and ‘longkang fishing’ at discounted prices. Following the tour of the Kranji Countryside, residents proceeded by bus to Marina Barrage for lunch. The scenic Marina Barrage provided a photo moment for many of them and a group shot of all residents participating in the tour was taken.

After lunch, residents enjoyed a stroll around the themed gardens of the Gardens by the Bay and learnt how plants are linked to Singapore’s culture. Before heading home, we made a short trip to Kampong Glam, where we had the opportunity to understand and appreciate Malay culture through visits to the Malay Heritage Centre and the Sultan Mosque. Throughout the journey, residents found opportunities to interact with MP Lee Li Lian.

Despite the stormy weather throughout the day, residents remained upbeat and enjoyed the tour. Mr Guay, a 58 year old resident said that the Kranji Countryside was a pleasant experience for him. He said, “The visit to Kin Yan Agrotech was enjoyable as we got to see first-hand how Singapore farms grow such crops. But of course, I also enjoyed purchasing products from the farm!” Another resident, Mr Low added, “Unfortunately we do not get to visit the Kranji Countryside and other attractions due to the distance (from where I stay). Today was thus a good moment to catch up with old memories.”

Ticket sales for the Family Tour began on 8 April 2013. Due to overwhelming response, all tickets to the Tour were sold out on 15 April 2013. However, according to Legislative Assistant to Li Lian, Ms Ng Swee Bee, residents do not have to be disappointed for too long. She said: “The Constituency Committee will be working hard to organise more of such trips and we hope that all residents who missed out on our Family Tour will keep a look out for our one day tour to Muar, Malaysia.”

According to the Minister, Tampines TC’s MA rate for 2012 is $4.99 per property unit. We understand that there was a change in MA from 2011 to 2012, meaning that it was the first year in Tampines for the incumbent MA, CPG. Coincidentally, CPG was incumbent in Aljunied TC until 2011, and its unit rate tendered in FY 2010 for Aljunied had been $6.51 (according to the government’s tables). We do not wish to speculate why a MA would tender in 2012 at a lower rate for MA services than in 2010, given the rising costs. However, we note that as early as at 2007, another MA, EM Services, had tendered at $5.75 per residential unit for Pasir Ris-Punggol Town.

Was invited to attend the graduation ceremony of the Design & Environment school at Ngee Ann Polytechnic this morning.

As an alumnus of NP who graduated in 1999, revisiting the school brought back a lot of memories. The school compound has changed vastly in terms of infrastructure and environment to accommodate to the needs of curriculum and activities, which has multiplied and evolved over the years.

For the cleaning exercise at the Block 511 Bedok North market next month, discussions between our town council and the NEA are in progress to ensure a smooth exercise, including the scaffolding arrangements.

"We are pleased that the NEA Advisory has finally clarified the following regarding hawker centres :-

1. Spring cleaning is expected to be carried out on a quarterly basis; and
2. The ceilings, beams and exhaust ducts are to be cleaned at least once a year.

It is clear from the Advisory that Town Councils do NOT need to clean the ceilings, beams and exhaust ducts at each spring cleaning exercise, but annually. It is also clear from the Straits Times’ article dated 1 June 2013 that the Town Council had carried out cleaning of the ceilings, beams and exhaust ducts last year. We reiterate that no authorized TC staff told any hawker or anyone of any additional charges to be imposed for the cleaning.

We hope this clarifies to the public that AHPE TC has duly carried out its responsibilities as required."
